Male or female owner!
Are more men or women ball python owners! This came up on a thread so I thought I would make a poll!
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Other...

Re: Male or female owner!
i think 8 out of 10 women get into it from men not to sound sexes. and i think more men breed a more collection than women do.
dont get mad ladies
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I put other because I know some couples that take care of the collection and they both love balls!

I would actually agree with this. Keeping snakes seems more of a manly thing, but hey, girls like snakes too;)
Why I say it seems more of a manly thing is because almost everyone I know who doesn't keep snakes or has kept snakes at one point are shocked to hear about the snakes I have and the amount I have.

Not mad. But the men in my life are mostly afraid of snakes. I got into the hobby of my own accord.

I think it's funny as hell when men are afraid of a snake. I know plenty of guys who down right HATE snakes LOL.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I personally don't know any women that have snakes(except here LOL). Everyone I know thinks I am crazy for having snakes including men!
-
Re: Male or female owner!
One of my guy friends screamed like a two year old when he saw my snakes. Most of my friends, guys and girls alike, where scared for a while, but I've converted most of them now :D I grew up loving snakes and reptiles, but my parents encouraged me. If they'd forbidden me to touch them and gave me dolls and shoes instead, who knows? and I fully plan on having a very large collection. ;)

My mom would never let me bring my critters home. One day my mom screamed and I came running to the living room and my mom was on a chair. She said "Do you have a snake in my house?" Knowing that I was busted, I said " Ya, in my room" She said "Well it's not there now! It jsut went across the floor!" Maybe if she did, I won't want them now!!!

Hm.. nope.
I disagree, because your statistic was made up on the spot and has no merit or evidence for support. ;)
I'm the one who got myself into reptiles. My best friend got into reptiles by herself as well. And I have met multiple little girls who LOVE reptiles without the influence of boys. (specifically snakes)
In fact, many of my guy friends are afraid of my snakes. Go figure.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
No male influence here either! Got into the hobby all on my little girly lonesome :P
My boyfriend got it from me, though :D
-
Re: Male or female owner!
i voted other since my wife helps out alot with the bp's. she actually bought the geckos, she fell in love with them but she never delt with reptiles until not too long ago. was i bad influence? LOL, i'm only joking. i'm happy that she got used to them and loves them as much as i do.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I got the bug from my daughter and turned my husband on to the hobby. :D
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Lol, I can't make many girl friends around where I live 'cause there aren't that many that are into reptiles like me. :(
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I am a woman and I completely got into snakes on my own. My boyfriend just kind of started getting into them. He handles the snakes while I clean out enclosures.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Female here, and amongst the number that have been hauling garters in from their backyards since they were fast enough to catch them :).
right now my husband just tolerates my obsession, maybe one day I can get him interested to :D
-
Re: Male or female owner!
:8::rofl: I'm having some context issues at the moment...

:2cent:
Well, you may want to reconsider the definition of what a man is. For we fear nothing :colbert:
Wait!!! I almost forgot about the IRS and loss of cable TV during the playoffs, just ignore my mindless babbling.
FWIW I know plenty of women who got into this without men and some are even breeders. Their husbands are the ones who nag about "the snake room" ( probably because they want a pool table and a big screen where the snakes live  )
-
Re: Male or female owner!
lol idk any females around where i live that have snakes. So hmm. Maybe their just not so vocal about it  Cuz people tend to thinks its weird to own a snake because "it will get big and kill you and your children then what?" I know people are not so intelligent
Edit* That quote came from co workers when they found out i got my son a bp

Same here. Most of the men around me are terrified of my snakes. I've always loved reptiles. :)
-
Re: Male or female owner!
When I first got my snake my wife was terrified of it, but she’s slowly coming around. Last night I was handling him, and she was really captivated by his pattern. Hopefully she will be willing start handling herself because I plan on getting more snakes, and it would be nice to have some help when cleaning up.

I'm one of the 2 out of 10 then. My boyfriend has ZERO interest in the snakes - it's completely MY thing, not his.

when i tell people i have snakes their first reaction is EWW but then when i explain how friendly they are i say like an over grown earth worm lol they sorta give in and say ahh i see thats cool! :P
-
Re: Male or female owner!
i put other just cause ill buy them and shell claim them even if they were meant for me lol.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I have always loved reptiles. My husband tolerates them and even likes a few but they are not "his thing" so he doesn't handle them or anything. My brother hates snakes and is terrified of them. However, I did have a male roommate that didn't like snakes until he met Isis, my boa. He liked her and would take her out on occasion. Even my sister who was terrified of snakes started to like Isis. My older sister got into snakes recently (haha, I converted one!) so actually the majority of people in my life that like snakes are female and developed a liking of reptiles on their own or from another female.

Re: Male or female owner!
Balls are so misuderstood! The guys are winng ladies! LOL!
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I used to catch garter snakes as a kid and I thought they were really cool but I never considered keeping a snake. My husband loves reptiles and had a ball python as a high school student. He always wanted another and together we now own two. We take care of them equally. He definitely got me into owning them but I was never afraid of snakes.

Re: Male or female owner!
I think my boyfriend and I got into snakes around the same time, but his interest has waned for the most part whereas mine has only grown and I've gone on to start breeding. My mother is terrified of snakes, my brother thinks they're "nasty", and my dad just thinks they're a neat oddity. My kids (son 2 and daughter 5) ADORE our snakes and have for as long as I can remember.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Its funny my fiance tolerates it, will not hold one but she will feed for me if I'm busy or if I ask for help. She hates when I get a new one but once its set in stone she wants to pick it out (example my new Lesser). She really likes going to the shows though and the last show I bought my lesser and she told me I might as well buy a spider too for the price. I think the only thing she HATES is my new rack from reptile basics because its black and doesn't match with anything in the bedroom lol lol
-
Re: Male or female owner!
I got into reptiles with no influence from anybody I personally knew. My boyfriend has become interested in it due to my influence and is now as big of a nut as me, but hasn't quite grasped the genetics part yet. He's got plenty of interest in it though and will be on the same page as me in no time :)

Re: Male or female owner!
I got my fiance into snakes when we first started dating, he was scared of them :rofl::rofl:

Re: Male or female owner!

We are talking about owners sex in this poll not your ball python's sex!
-
Re: Male or female owner!
This female is a proud ball python owner, although, I didn't choose the "couples" option. Because, despite the fact that I DO have a boyfriend, he said he could "care less about the snake". Yeah, that does sound a little harsh when put into words, but he said he bought it just to make me happy.
Well, some complications with directions and a slightly overpriced payment of $120 CAN, and I am indeed happy with her. :P Buuuuuut, she is quite bright for a normal, so I call her my cute lil dinker.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Well, I voted female, cause I am one, but I could have said couple since my BF/partner not only likes the snakes and owns one himself, but encourages the breeding of them for cool morphs...and so they can pull their own weight as it were. :D
But I got into reptiles and snakes all on my own as well. My dad (navy and raised in the Mojave desert) hates snakes and can't understand where I got the liking, and my mom thinks I'm nuts but at least isn't afraid of them. :) My ex-husband didn't let me have more then the cute checkered garter that was my first snake. He wasn't exactly afraid of snakes, but he didn't want any larger ones around. :)

Re: Male or female owner!
Female here as well. No influence. Ive loved anything alive except spiders from the moment I could walk. My dad was all for it (encouraged it actually) but my mom never wanted anything in the house. I dont think any of my friends are afraid of snakes. I sold a baby ball to good friend last year. I have a bunch of other friends who want a baby this year as well. Lots of snake people in this area i suppose.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
A couple here. He cleans the animals, since my nose will stuff when they need to be cleaned, though I change the water each day.
I handle them more though, we take turns feeding them.
I deal more with buyers, while he prefers to do the "grunt work" as he calls it.:snake:
-
Re: Male or female owner!
lol Crap i didn't read the question right
it is me and my girlfriend that own our snake
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Actually family into the reptiles ....
:gj:

Re: Male or female owner!
There are a lot of stereotypes out there about snake owners. One image that comes to mind is the young, white, tattooed, smoker type - ironically, this is very outdated and inaccurate I've found.
In my observation:
Most of the people I know that like snakes as pets are women.
Most of the people I know that like snakes for any other reason are men.
HHH

Re: Male or female owner!
i'm a man and i like my snakes they are beautiful and i can't understand how people can say they don't have personalities each one of my snakes are as individual as any other animal that's why i love my babies
-
Re: Male or female owner!
i'm a girl & i love snakes. i had one when i was 19 & my roommate was scared to death of it. every time she saw it she'd scream & run back into her room... good days. i miss that ball.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
Couple here. Like a lot of others have said, we know a lot of men who are afraid of snakes, and most of our female friends want to hold them or touch them. Once they see how tame BP's are, we hear, "when can I come over and see your snakes again?" :rolleye2:
-
Re: Male or female owner!
im a woman & soon to be owner of a bp. ive got the terrarium set up & am just waitin' to get a few more things. i've loved animals all my life & when i was little i used to bring dead things into the house crying & begging my mom to "fix it". she'd just yell at me & make me take it back outside. i remember being so confused as to why she wouldnt just make them better, LOL.
-
I am a guy and my girlfriend loves my snakes as much as I do. (sounds wrong but whatever) LOL. I have chosen carefully for looks and genetics. Love them all even the grouchy one.
-
Re: Male or female owner!
LOVE THEM....And I am a woman. Use to be way back in the day that snakes were looked at as these scary hungry monsters that would hunt you down and eat you... But now with all the education and research out there on them the real truth is revealed and people see they are not so scary after all. In fact, owning a snake these days has become very common and not looked at as crazy anymore. I guess you could say it's more accepted, just like owning a dog, cat or parrot.

Re: Male or female owner!
I’m female and my daughter and I are both into snakes and reptiles. Our boyfriends are slowly getting over their fear! Her boyfriend is coming around and has even purchased his own snake now. My boyfriend on the other hand prefers to admire from a far. Lol

Re: Male or female owner!
I'm a female :) my boyfriend couldn't have cared less either way towards my getting a snake when I brought it up (I wanted to check how he'd feel since we do live together) but since getting her I'd almost say that he loves her more than I do! [emoji23] I'm obsessed with her but he describes her as "a little ray of sunshine" and a "donut of love" when she's curled in a perfect little ball...those wouldn't even be MY first choice of words when describing a snake even though I love her to death [emoji38] I think it's pretty funny to be honest
