so yeah
So please ignore the fact I look like hell in this pic....the snake around me is an indian/burm cross I've been trying to get rid of unfortunately I am extremely picking about who takes her, not to mention she is mean as hell I love her to death but I really don't think she can be tamed~ she did mu8sk all over me right after this shot I knew it was coming

Oh took me a second to see the snake..
-
Re: so yeah
she is gorgeous but nothing I have tried has worked not even letting her bite the heck out of me....her past owner was scared to death of her and I have begun to wonder if that fed her ego.....and that pic was taken right before she went into shed she's like two to three shadeds lighter
-
Re: so yeah
Like with all animals some snakes are just more skiddish and defensive around humans. She may never calm down. Try and think about things from her vantage point and perspective. Look a things and situations that we might not think is stress full but a scared snake finds terrifying. For example going into shed, after a feed, ect. You may simply want to leave her be only feeding and water and cleaning her for a few weeks even months. Then slowly start earning her trust.
Be prepared you might never have a tame snake..

Re: so yeah
that is all I do anymore and just merely walking by her cage she strikes out it's insane I have not seen retics like this. everything I do with her is on a have to basis I cover her whole body with a pillow case when I ave to go into her cage in and out in 30 sec

-
Re: so yeah
Your implying that retics are like that...?
Thats a pretty bold statement...
-
Re: so yeah
no I simply said I've never seen retics like this....she isn't a retic there is really no reason for her to be so aggressive....it's not a feed response

Its not a retic, so why on earth are you comparing it to one?
It sounds like you are making retics out to be big bad snakes....
which they already have a bad rep, so why further the stereotype?

Sort of like news articles making Afrocks out to be evil and out for blood after some were found in south Florida, mostly implying that through hybrid vigor (which I believe is a severely flawed theory) that they'll hybridize to form a super snake that will get bigger and super mean, in spite of captive breeding efforts for the same hybrid which completely contradict that idea.
For any species, if there aren't many in captivity, they are likely to be a bit more aggressive than those that have been bred for several generations, simply due to the higher number of WC animals people are working with. Does that mean that it is an aggressive species by nature? No. Someone's got to start somewhere with any species. Neither retics nor afrocks are aggressive by default. I've seen examples of each (many more so with retics) that were baby dolls and a pleasure to work with. I'm under the firm belief that pretty much any species with regular handling from a young age will be very handleable at somewhat larger sizes.
All that said, she is a beautiful snake, and hopefully with some more work and patience, you will at least get her used enough to handling for it not cause her to get defensive.

I don't think she meant anything negative by it.
Anyway, I had an evil pet BCI and what I did was trade him to a breeder who didn't care about his temperament. So I can't really help you, but I do wish you luck.

Re: so yeah
I can see my phrase was taken way out of context...FYI Retics do happen to be my fav snake....I have seen several retics with strong feeding responses, several that were big babies such as one I worked with in St. Louis he was about 16 feet and laid on a guinea pig cause it annoyed him. My snake as beautiful as she is...is just straight mean I can take her out on one of her good days and hold her with out musking and such, though they are few and far between. Yet as soon as someone walks by at that point I am playing catch the flying 5.5 foot snake...honestly thats a lot of snake she's four inches longer than me

Re: so yeah
Here is another pic of here I just took it she rearranged her cage lol

Re: so yeah
Hopefully, she'll mellow for you with love and attention...I have a friend who got a down right viscious Burm and tamed her to the point that she's a big ole' lazy puppy dog...It took awhile and a lot of blood, but in the end it paid off...Good luck...I know all about the musking, I have a couple that fling poo/pee and musk the crud out of me...Too bad my Gucci cologne doesn't fully cover that yucky smell...:rage::rage::rage:

Re: so yeah
Don't worry JEWSKIN...I get what you are saying about retics. They are definitely jumpy animals(wether it be feeding response or not). Maybe try feeding that snake a bit more. It may just have a big appetite. Hope it tames down for you.
-
Re: so yeah
Thank you so much guys! BTW she eats like 15 dollars worth of rats a week appetite isn't it lol.....hopefully she will tame down I do want to breed her when she's big enough she's so beautiful in person!
-
Re: so yeah
dumb questions but can't retics get even 30 ft?!
:O

Re: so yeah
Alright. You're working with a young, "mean" snake. No problem. Be glad she's not 12 yrs. old...
You are doing some things right, some things wrong. Don't handle her much. As little as possible at the start. You want to gain trust. Do your "30 second in and out" enclosure maintenance, but make sure she gets your scent and is not threatened by you. Try not to cover her if you can. You are trying to eliminate her associating your scent with negative experiences. If she gets used to your scent and is not covered, poked, prodded, picked up, etc. she will realize you mean her no harm. Then let her start to approach you. Let her initiate contact. Let her lick your hand/arm. If you think she's going to bite, back off (sounds like you have a bit of experience, you should be able to "read" the snake by now). This could take awhile (longest I've ever taken to calm a snake was six months. A different species which shall remain nameless to protect the innocent, but it went from a psycho mouth of needles to a crowd favourite at our herp club's mall shows), but if you're dedicated and patient, it will work out in the end. And the reward for the work you've done will be amazing.
Good luck.
Chris

Well, since there has been a substantial financial reward (I believe it's now in the $100,000 range) offered by the Smithsonian for any snake of 30 feet since the 1930's, I would collect that...
Jewskin:
Taming of tegu's is pretty much the same as for snakes, except you have the benefit of much better hearing capabilities. Audible cues can be a great help...

Thats fine with me. I like package deals LOL. I have an empty 72" Neodesha hanging out in my garage. It will only be another year or two until she needs it anyway. For the record...Arizona is much better than NJ :-)
