I got a new camera! Time for Dart Frog pics!
My old camera was absolutely TERRIBLE at taking pictures of these guys, but the new one is much, much better!
One of my imitators (they don't pose very well...)

Awww, they are awesome! I've always wanted a few of them. Are they really difficult to take care of? I love the teal-ish colors on them. What type is the first one?

I love dart frogs! If it wasn't for it being so hard to get food for them I'd be building a vivarium for them.

They're really not that hard at all! They basically need high humidity (close to 100%, definitely no lower than 85%), temperatures in the mid-seventies (75 is ideal, but anything from 70-80 will work), places to hide, and very small food items like fruit flies or pinhead crickets. Most people keep them in vivariums with live plants since the plants help keep the humidity up and give the frogs some added security. My auratus viv (the green and black ones) has a waterfall and is pretty elaborate, but for quarantine setups I've used something as basic as a plastic tub with damp paper towels and little plastic cups for hidey-holes. The first frog is an Imitator dart frog, Ranitomeya imitator (formerly Dendrobates imitator).

You should do it! Once you order a couple of flightless fruit fly cultures and extra cups to make new ones, you'll be set for food, no problem :gj:

Do you just feed your's wingless fruit flies or pinhead crickets too? How often do you have to feed them? I just heard these guys were high maintenance but I've always thought they were super cool and one of the most beautiful animals in the world.

I give them fruit flies and pinhead crickets, but a lot of people just use fruit flies; I happen to have a handy supply of pinheads from work, I would NEVER breed crickets in my house if I could possibly avoid it (Stinky & loud!). The fruit flies are much easier, once you get a handle on the 'boom and bust' cycle (you'll have hundreds of flies one day, and NONE the next). I usually keep at least 2 cultures going at once to make sure I have a steady supply. I try to feed mine every other day, but the adults are fine being fed twice a week. They're really easier than people think, the captive bred ones are pretty hardy!

Which reminds me, I need to set up another culture soon! I do have a question for you - how the heck do you manage to dust your fruit flies? I've done it, but when I go to dump them in the viv, then the extra calcium/herptivite also dumps into the viv. I haven't gotten a good technique down yet.

Re: I got a new camera! Time for Dart Frog pics!
Hi,
I'm not sure if it would work with fruitflies or pinheads but I made a duster when I was feeding crickets.
It was simply a plastic container my fish food came in with a false floor about an inch from the bottom.
I managed to find another container that fitted snuggly inside so simply cut the bottom inch off that, cut out half the base and replaced it with fine mesh, then turned it base upwards and slid it down inside the bigger container.
Then I put a little dusting powder in the bottom, scopped up the crickets, gave ot a good shake to get them nice and covered in the powder, held it at an angle with the mesh half lower down and tapped it to let the excess powder drop back down through the mesh.
Then you just need to make sure you have the solid half at the bottom when tipping it into the animals cage and it stops the powder from going in the tank. :gj:
It was a bit of a faff to make and it helps to put a line on the outside showing which half of the false floor is solid but it really reduced the amount of dusting powder I wasted. :)
Oh and if the false floor fits tight enough to stay in do not glue it in and it is a lot easier to clean.

Re: I got a new camera! Time for Dart Frog pics!
Wow, you've really put some thought into it! I'm with rabernet, I dump the flies into a plastic cup with the dust, shake it up good, and dump the flies in the tank; usually some dust ends up in the viv. But I dunno if I'm up for making such a fancy apparatus just to avoid it :P I use the Repashy ICB supplement, which has a finer grind than Herptivite, so that helps a bit (sticks to the flies more).

OMG, the baby frog is so cute and tiny! :D How difficult are dart frogs to keep? (in comparison to, say, your average snake)

Cute little baby froggie!
I have found these guys to be very interesting and I would love to keep some myself though I've always felt a little intimidated by them. They just seem so fragile and difficult to keep. Do you have any links to some good caresheets or perhaps could answer a few questions for me? I'd love to get into these frogs.

Thanks.
I'd say the best bet it to Google dart frog forums and start reading. There are not great books out there and most of the newest info on species, husbandry, ect. is being talked about on line.
There is lots of info that needs to be understood to propely care for them.
