I have a 850 gram lesser female and she is a 09. I also have a 09 male pastel that it 780 grams. For some reason they gain weight from rat to rat and keep it. I have two 09 het pied females that are growing slower at 500grams and 600 grams. I wish they were like the others. And the rest are not as great weight gainers as the first two mentioned.

OMG, I remember you posted one time feeling bad that my BP was so small as it was so much smaller than yours. Patriot is now around 800g. Other than peeing and pooping, he seems to keep every gram ingested. Times when he acted particularly hungry, I'd notice a slight weight loss.

As for the OP, can't really answer that as we haven't had our BP for a full year yet. It has gained 700+g in 8 months so far.

Oh ya I remember that! Wow time goes by lol :(. Unfortunately, my 3 older BPs went off feed around beginning of November and are still off feed for the most part. They haven't really gained much weight in 4 months.

Ah, that's what gave Patriot time to catch up. Other than a stress attack in August and refusing a rat, he hasn't missed a meal and swallows his mice with gusto!

Wow, my 800g was hatched about half a year earlier than yours, yet they're the same weight. The difference in snake sizes is mind blowing. :)

I bought a male late 08 Pinstripe at 170g and and female mid 08 Lemon Pastel at 420g in April 09. They are now 1280g and 880g respectively - these things happen I guess but the big boy's been lifting the tail of every female he's been with including my 3kg Spider - I guess size does help after all!!

She is April 09 (4/20/09) So she still has some time to gain more. And before you got her from me she had been off feed for a little over a month.

She was an eater from the start. She started on mice, then ASFs, and before she went off feed she was on rats. that girl could EAT.

So what kind of a feeding schedule do you guys use? I have 3 '09 females and was planning on breeding them not next season but the following one. I've read that many people have gotten girls to breeding size in 18 months, what kind of a feeding plan does that take?

I feed everything under 500g every 4 to 5 days, depending on if the animal has a good feeding response its 3 to 4 days. Then move to every 7 days. I will also offer my females a second prey item if they still seem like they are hunting after they have reached 500g. I prefer my males to be lean so they only get offered one prey item a week after 500g.

But she should be good for next year.

I feed all my snakes ever 10 days, except our Burm.
she gets a 7-9 lb. rabbit every 14-20 days.

I have two females that should reach 1000 grams at 1 years old, fed twice a week till they hit 500 or so grams and then I upped their prey size so they only take once a week now.

Re: What is the biggest in a year?
So how many people feed little and often and how many feed larger and less frequent? My animals tend to have 1 larger prey item weekly and they seem to grow at a similar rate to animals fed smaller items every 4 days or so, so it seems there's not a huge difference.

I prefer this as it means my animals are normally empty come feeding time so usually feed more consistantly, there is less frequent cleaning out required and of course, it works out cheaper!

Also, has anyone studied the weight gain from different food items? I've heard it's typically 20% for mice, 30% for rats and 40% for multis (ASFs)? That means for every 100g of mice you feed, the weight gain is only 20g compared to 30g for 100g of rats and 40g for 100g of multis.

Little is in the eyes of the beholder, lol.
When I feed two prey items the weight of those two is more than the "appropriate size" single item they could eat in one meal, so they gain more than what one meal would give them.
This only works if they continue to eat :P

Breeding your own rats takes the cost factor out, unless your feeding hundreds of snakes, lol.

I noticed that mice sucked when I first got into ball pythons, so I have never fed mice since then.

I haven't noticed the difference in weight gain per type of prey because I switch mine over to rats as soon as I can.
I start hatchlings with asf's because they readily take them, then it's all rats all of the time.

Wow Freaky frog that's some killer weight gain :P

That's feeding her every 5 days till she hit 1000 grams and then switching her to every 7 days. She has NEVER (knock on wood) missed a meal. I feed small weaned rats to all my snakes a 500 gram male gets the same size rat as a 2500 gram female. Doing another female this way and the results are the same. I got this albino female in June of 2009 she was 250 grams same deal fed her every 5 days till she hit 1000 then switched her to every 7 she's now 1200 grams. Thats about 1000 grams in 8 months. Shes a great feeder still (knock on wood)

One of my female pastels from '07 was 1200g at one year of age. The other was in the 900s.

My Ornate monitor is a year-and-a-half old, and he is almost five feet long. Does that count for anything?

What type of rack are you using? How many hides and what are your temps? I think that good feeding has a lot to do with husbandry although some balls seem to feed and not really care. I have been told that when you feed balls often and they put on weight, they are more likely to go off feed. And this is probably why I have a few balls that are off feed.

Mine are in a melamine rack in 28 qt tubs, they start out in 6qt tubs until around 200 grams then I move them up. They each get an appropriately sized hide except for my big girls (2000+ grams).

Yours are not off feed due to heavy eating, they are off feed because of the time of year. :gj:

I have fed twice a week till 700 grams or so and then backed off,
nobody went off feed because of feeding so often.

I have no snakes off feed right now except my large breeders, and all of my snakes have eaten all winter, strange, but whose to argue, lol

Husbandry would be my choice for #1 reason why any ball python goes off feed,
except gravid females of course :P
