Do you talk to your animals?
My family all think I've finally lost my mind. They'll all be watching TV in the livingroom and they'll hear me holding conversations with various animals in my bedroom. I might be asking the boa if she wants a bath to help out with her shed, or asking the blood if I could please check the temps really quick without getting tagged, or asking the beardie what he wants for lunch today or telling him he can't have any roaches until he finishes his collard greens.
I'm thinking my family might be right in saying that I'm insane.
Do any of you talk to your animals? What do you usually say?
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
But not out loud. I hold conversations with them in my head though.
(I once startled myself by talking out loud to them without realizing it and looked around and went "who said that?!?!? must be a mind reader!")

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I know they don't understand, but I'm 100% certain that the geckos recognize my voice. I tell them all sorts of things, really, from asking the leo if she wants some crickets to telling the crestie that she needs to be cute cause my GF is having a bad day, etc. They also occasionally get scolded for worrying us. I don't think you're insane, as long as you're not expecting them to talk back. :)

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I have never and would never hold a coversation with any of my reptiles but I have said things like "Sorry" if I startle them or something, "Don't think about it", "Don't you bite me" or "Oh, be quite" when they are hissing.

Haha yea. Or in my case with my Hondurans... "Where you going?!" or "Hold still would ya!"

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I don't really...
unless they do something like flip a water bowl 20 seconds after i clean out the cage... or poop right after i clean the cage...
And its usually me going "GOD DAMN IT (insert name here)!"
I'm not sure if that's talking to them... lol

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
i talk to my pets all the time. i even ask them who wants to come out and play and who ever comes out the hide first get to come out and play. i dont think thats insane is it?

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Well.... I do the baby voice thing... well many different voices, depends on the feeling I'm trying to express. But this comes from having family dog ALWAYS since I was a kid. While they might not understand what we say, dogs can certainly understand the feelings we are trying to express, thus the baby voice.. :D
Sometimes I will go to someone's house and play around with their dog and they'll be like "I didnt know my dog could do that!" and I would say something like "Do what?" To me is just normal behavior. LOL!
It is just hard to let go of habits :P

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Hi....have you read any of my posts....lol.....
All the time...everyday...except right after they eat.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
My comments are mostly along the lines of grumbling at them (good naturedly) from time to time.
While I'm cleaning up large amounts of poo or they spilled their water bowl and made a huge mess: "You'd better be glad I love you, because I wouldn't do this for just anyone!"
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I do talk to my animals. The things I say are:
"Awww your so cute!" When one of them are being cute.
"Oh baby don't worry." When I'm tryna check the mouth.
"Come here baby." When they almost slither off of my shoulders or neck.
"Hey little guy/girl!" When I'm bringing one out of their tank/tub.
"Oh be quite/Oh stop it." When I'm hissed at (when I'm volunteering).
"Don't be like that." When a snake tries to bite me (when I'm volunteering).
"Sorry!" When I spook one of them.
I say a bunch of weird stuff.. Most of the time in baby voices.

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
please dont bite me. Ok yeah thats my hand and those are your teeth..normally sumthing like that
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Once my guy sheds Ill be like "Oh man dont you look sexy all the chickie ball pythons will want you now!"
Stupid stuff cause I enjoy being humorous.

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I talk to them, and I'm sure the friends that I have think I'm insane for it, lol. I'm home alone most of the day so I'll check on them and say hi if they come out to see what's going on.
I talk to Micron the most since he has the most personality. Snickets I talk to when I have her out. And Wiggles... Most of the time it's a "God you're such a jerk" or "Oh yeah, you keep hissing and think you're big and bad... Jerk."
...Maybe I am crazy.

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I am always waking my GF up in the middle of the night by talking to my python and/or her colony of rats when I come in from work and begin my husbandry ritual.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Sure, I talk to them all the time. Everytime I look into their tubs, I'll say something to them. I don't really converse with them, but I will talk TO them.

I always talk to my animals! I don't hold actual conversations with them or anything like that! My family already thinks I am nuts for talking to my animals.

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I always talk to my animals, and not just my snakes.
Mine all have not only names but nicknames, and I talk to them as much as I do to the rest of my family. Then again, the only one in the family who doesn't do that is my hubby, so maybe HE'S the crazy one! :D

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Sure thing. :) I talk to all my animals...heck all animals period...all the time. Because they respond to it.
No no...they don't talk back. Yes I have mental disorders but I'm not THAT bad. :P But they respond in other ways.
Talking to your animals (except maybe fish) calms them, helps them to know you, and calms you as well. Animals can learn from being spoken to as well, and not just cats dogs and horses. :)
My snakes, of course, can't hear me per say... but they are soothed by the vibration when I talk while holding them.
My BTS on the other hand recognizes when he's being spoken to and looks over at you. He seems to have learned his name, at least, and loves hearing people talk to him.
And every cat I've ever owned has always responded to my talking. :) Whether they understand is a big debate I won't get into...but they DO know and respond to the voice.
Besides, who doesn't find chatting to their pet a great way to unload after a bad day, or a wonderful way to cheer up when down? :)

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Having a Siamese and an Oriental Cat, they never shut up so we are always talking to them. I don't really talk to the snakes though, I talk more to the rodents. Usually the ASFs as they try to bite me when i move them around.

I scoffed loudly when I read the title and rolled my eyes...
Then I caught myself talking to my Het Amel girl cause she was honery... D'oh!

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I'm totally guilty of using the baby voice with any animal...horse, dog, cat, snake, fish (yes, I'm that bad). Granted I grew up around people who did that as well so it was completely normal behavior. They may not understand me, but when I'm doing that I'm also calm and relaxed and giving off nonthreatening signals-and a lot of animals pick up on that as well as my tone of voice. So it's just another form of communication. :)
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I talk to my animals out loud all the time, I will even occasionally use a baby voice. I have no doubt I will do it to my snakes to once I finish setting up for them.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I talk with my animals all the time, I walk in the room, the carpet python wakes up and starts looking around, i tell her to "go back to bed" and she usually does. the bearded start going crazy and I tell them, "no your not getting food, calm down" but they don't listen also might do some head bobs back at the males that bob at me.
then sometimes ill open the cages of snakes trying to get out and talk to them, or when I watch tv with them, that when the conversations start. the bigger snakes will sometimes talk back lol.
feeding time I have to talk to the jag "ok pyscho, give me more than half a second to open the cage" or "no you already ate, stop giving me that look"
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Oh god, yeah. All the time. :D
It's really half and half, though - sometimes the baby voice, sometimes not. Depends who I'm with. My dad talks to the cat, so... maybe it's inheritable? Bahahah. I have phrases and praises for every animal. I just love 'em all so much - my beardie is the "big man" and my ball is my "beautiful girl". I call my cockatiel a "chubby chicken".
And the dog, well, he's just a dolt.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I use a high pitched annoying voice for my dog.
But I just talk normal to my reptiles.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
guilty... i do it ALL the time! And what's worse, I use a baby voice... yes i do. but i love my snakes, and i would give so much up for them.(money, job, popularity, friends. that kind of things)
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Oh man, I talk to my animals all the time. I use my "baby voice" but it's not all high pitch and squeeky. When I talk to babies I usually talk softer and a tad higher, but not the typical 'baby talk' stuff. So, I use that same tone with my animals.
Well, the cats are a bit of a different story... I guess I use the softer tones with the snakes and mice to help calm them, and just to talk to them ^_^ The cats though... they get talked to like I would talk to a peer, or perhaps my younger brother... depends on if they are in trouble or not :P
I tend to ask the snakes where they are going, or why they had to soil their tub as soon as I changed it, or ask what they are looking at. The mice it's usually along the lines of 'don't you bite me you little demon' or 'look how good your being... see it's ok' when I'm holding them and they keep their teeth in their head

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I almost always sing to pickles.
"Dear Pickles, won't you come out to play
Dear Pickles, greet the brand new day..."
I recognize my insanity and embrace it whole-heartedly.

Ha! I know how that is! If I ever see one of my kitties (even through a window, in which case I'll open it and call their names ), I end up chatting endlessly with them. Which is strange, because I rarely say more than 'hi' to the humans in my family. If my tabby boy Ira comes to visit me in my room while I'm working I'll pick him up and talk to him for hours... I have to know how the quail are this season and if he's seen the new feral cat around or if he's still being a bully to the neighbor kitties...
Insanity is not a new thing in my life... :P

Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I have a total of 20 pets in the house (16 snakes, 3 cats & a dog), and there are only 2 humans here... so if I didn't talk to the animals, I'd be greatly lacking in conversation. :D Seriously, I do talk to my snakes more than I should, especially considering they don't have ears - LOL.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Btw, you know that show "It's Me or the Dog?" On one episode the trainer was making fun of this woman, because she had created voices for each of her 3 dogs... all I could think was damn, we (my roommate & I) totally do that for our pets.
Guess we're crazy cat/dog/snake ladies!! :rolleye2:
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
I do some, but not really enough that your average person would question my sanity. It's more questions like "What do you think you're doing" or "Where in the world do you think you're trying to go". It's not like I carry on conversations with them about the trials of my day ;).
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
This is very funny. My wife talks to ours all of the time. She is a little crazy...
When my daughter and I took Kenobi to the vet because of a RI, the vet was talking to him. My daughter and I look at each other, and started to laugh. Vet asks "what's so funny?" My daughter (8 year old know it all) says, "you know he can't hear you right? My Mom talks to them all the time too it's ok."
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Yes. I talk to my animals. My husband talks to his gerbils, too. My cats respond and understand (they come when called 90% of the time, and I don't mean with a can of tuna or anything). My snake, Nyoka.... well, we're still getting acquainted. Often, she'll get a "What -are- you doing?" The mice get talked to, also. I'm not one to use a baby voice, though.
-
Re: Do you talk to your animals?
Ok, so I have to change my statement about not using my 'baby' voice with my cats. As soon as I got home last night, I opened the door and the first thing I said was "Are you boys hungry?" haha
My cats definitely know what that means... in the morning I can be talking to them and as soon as I ask if they are hungry that take off and sit in front of their food bowl, impatiently waiting for me to catch up. And yes, my cats know "sit". They both have to be sitting in front of their respective bowls before I will fill them. They also sit, or high-five/spin (depending on the cat) for treats... lil brats ^_^
