    Question on heating multiple cages
I am wondering about the proper way to heat a stack of cages, like boaphile type cages.

If you put heat tape/heat mats on the bottoms of the cages, and then stack the cages, won't the cages get too hot? They'll be getting heat from top and bottom then wouldn't they?

Like if I have two PVCX cages and put one on top of the other, won't the bottom cage get too hot from the heat at the bottom and then heat from the bottom of the one on top?

this is the same question i had regarding plastic tubs, but all i got in response was a link to another thread where users both stated pros and cons of having it done. i'd like to hear from someone who has actually had experience with the topic. http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=113603

I saw that, but I figured there would be different options with this type of caging than with tubs. I'm interested to hear the answers. I'm so new at this I want to do everything right!

No one uses boaphile type cages?

I think a lot of people who use boaphile cages use radiant heat panels. I have a heat pad on my boaphile but I don't have another stacked on top of it so I can't really offer my experience.

I am currently setting up some tubs. What I will do is once I get them stabilized, Sunday morning when I get off work, I will stack them on top of each other and see what kind of results I get and post them. For now, I am thinking that if all of the UTH's are on the same end, and each one is on it's own t-stat then each heater will shut-off once it reaches the desired temp, whether the heat is coming from itself or below. But I will try and find out...

As far as the caging is concerned, you can always call or e-mail the manufacturer and ask them, but I dont think it will be much of a problem, as long as each cage has proper ventilation...

you could always put a piece of 1" foam in between the cages if it becomes a problem.
you can get it at home depot

i started a thread in regards to stacking tubs in such a manner and everyone seems to say that its a bad thing to do, but of you'd like you can take a look at the thread i started (http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...=stacking+tubs)

That is how I set up my cages it works great. You can see pics of my cages on my Iherp link.

are you referring to the little diagram i drew up? if so do you have any issues with ambient temps, with the bottom tub that'll be receiving the uth on the cool side, in which im trying to use the uth from the above tub to heat the ambient air of the lower tub.

Re: Question on heating multiple cages
I used to use Vision V221 cages before I got my rack. I used to use 1 sheet of flexwatt per cage along the back and ran them into a surge protector and then into a Herpstat. But my cages were 12 inches high so the heat on top from the cage above really didn't affect me negatively. Boaphiles look pretty cool, and don't have sliding glass fronts which my males were letting themselves out during breeding season until I bought display locks. Good luck.

i see how you have your tubs stacked, but they're stacked in a rack. i think what myself and the originator of this thread are referring to is, is it possible to stack the cages/tubs on top of each other as if you were stacking boxes.

and would the heat from the above uth have any affect whatsoever on the bottom cage/tub. if so what are the repercussions of doing so.

i on the other hand wanted to see if it would be alright to stack tubs in the manner that my diagram illustrates because i wanted to cut back on space by stacking them and eliminate the use of a space heater by using the uth from the tub above to heat the cool side of the lower tubs.

Re: Question on heating multiple cages
Yes I am referring to the drawing. They are not tubs its a 4 level cage and I'm using 11" flex watt for belly heat and a CHE in the middle of each for ambient temps. The hot spot in all four is 92 - 93 and ambient is 80 - 82 works great. I use 1 herpstat II to control temps one probe on the flex watt and one on the back wall for ambient I set both probes in the bottom cage and the top cages do get a little hotter so I use dimmers to regulate them to the same temp.
