    First lock!
Well, I figured out why Joxer has been acting so restless lately... he wanted some lovin'! :D I noticed he'd been super active the last week or two, which is very unusual for him - usually he spends most of his time hiding/sleeping. I also noticed Matilda (amel) had been more active than usual, so I figured it was worth a shot to introduce them. Within a few seconds of putting Matilda in Joxer's tub, he darted out like a racehorse and immediately started trying to mate. You all weren't kidding about cornsnake mating being crazy, especially when compared to ball pythons.

I left her in there for the night/day, and just removed her about an hour ago. Should I introduce again in a few days, and/or introduce Jox to the other girl (Coraline) this week? And how quickly should I expect to see gravid females? I've been pairing my BPs since early September with nothing yet, but I know corns act MUCH faster. Time to get an incubator, I guess?

Here are some videos & pics of their soiree, and I'll keep you updated on the progress... this is kind of an experimental breeding, since I'm testing all three for hets (they come from unknown genetics). Most likely I'll end up with a bunch of normals poss het for ghost/amel, which is still exciting since it's my first attempt at breeding. Wish me luck!

I almost felt like I was watching that scene from "The Accused" - yikes. :o (click on the image to play video)

OMG... I have a great response for that, but don't want to get an infraction. :colbert: Let's just say I'm used to how BPs do it, LOL.

Nice. :gj: Those BPs sure do take their time, huh?? I've been hooking up Nerissa & Mona (normals) with my pastel Toby for MONTHS now, since early September, and nothing... Mona is in shed as we speak, so I'm just praying that's her pre-ovulation shed already.

So, what kind of incubator do you recommend - for somebody who can't spend a fortune? I've been asking around on the forums, and it seems most make their own... just not sure I'm capable of doing that, especially if it requires re-building an old mini fridge. Any suggestions?

I posted a poll (on BP breeding) about the hovabator, and got negative replies about it... thinking it might be my best bet, though. So you've hatched corns with it successfully? And how many clutches can it hold at a time?

I used it for a couple years and hatched out several clutches each season. My females normaly double clutched and i even had a triple clutch one season:gj:.Well it depends on how many females you have and how many eggs each lays.If memory serves me right i placed 2 clutches or 3 if they are small clutches in a hovabator. This was up to 14 egg clutches from each female.I used tubs i bought from walmart and i will post that info on the sizes.See next post for this info

For my corn snake eggs i am using the following containers.A deli container with measurments of 9 and a half inches round 3" deep holding 9 eggs with room for more if it was needed. In the same hovabator i also have a 7" round deli container 3" deep with 14 eggs all in one clump.I also have a sterilite container that could also be used in a hovabator its 8" wide 13" long and 4 and a half inches deep. The only problem i had was finding the containers with the perfect height and length and for this i used a ruler at walmart to make sure the containers were what size i really needed.

Thanks for the info! :gj: I also found a nice Repti-pro incubator on eBay for $140 (shipped), but that's pushing my budget right now - especially since I'll have to get a thermostat to go with it. Hmmmmmm, guess I will have to think about that!

Btw, when I was at a local pet shop today (buying mice), the clerk recommended I call their reptile specialist who was out... she's apparently a corn expert, and has been breeding for like 20 years. I'm definitely a visual learner, so I'll see if she's available to help in person. They also said she'll possibly be interested in buying the babies, which is cool if I end up with all normals. ;)

That is way to much for a hovabator :O.Do you have a farm supply store near you? The hovabator was origianly used for hatching chicken eggs.I would call one and see if they have some and go there as it will be cheaper.Oh dont even mention you will be using it to hatch snake eggs as it will confuse them :P.

That price was for a large repti-pro, not the hovabator... Those are only like $30-60 on eBay. So should I just go with one of those, or spring for the fancy $140 incubator?

we made our incubator out of a bar fridge. Any fridge with the outside in decent condition will do. Remove the no longer needed motor and crap, add in a heatmatt or two run on a pulse stat and hey presto. Perfect incubator.
