I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Hey! So, I thought it would be fun to start a thread on the most interesting reactions you've gotten from people when you told them you had snakes, and how many. Have you ever scared off a possible significant other after revealing your pets to them?
I work at a family owned pet store, and have pretty much been called everything in the brook. Crazy. Weird. A freak. & even some other pretty harsh stuff.
Let's hear what stories you have.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I don't tell many people I have snakes unless I feel they're not going to judge me and immediately tell me that my snakes are going to kill me in my sleep. Therefore, I haven't gotten much crazy reactions. The funnest one was when I told my BF's mom I was going to get a snake and I thought her eyes were going to pop out... Oh how I wish I could get her that quiet that quick all the time...

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Pretty much every opprotunity i have to bring it up, i will tell customers that come in to PetSmart about how i have 6 snakes and 40 Rats, it usually makes them go, WHAT?? Soon i want to be able to say " Oh yeah i only have 23 ball pythons and 120 rats, its not too bad.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I don't really even care what the hell people call me, almost everyone at my school knows I have snakes. I love this reaction:
*Person walks near me, not realizing I have a snake in my hands. Comes right next to me* "Hi." *Person looks down* What's that?" *I look at them in the eyes* "A snake. Ball python, pretty docile." *Person's eyes widen* "Oh.." *Person walks away*
And
*Person walks near me* "Hello" *I make my snake visible and reply* "Hey there" *Person looks at the snake* "Oh my God, that's a snake!" *Person stays their distance* "It's not aggressive or mean at all, these snakes actually will ball up instead of bite" *Person keep their eyes on the snake* "Well, I don't like snakes."
Hahaha, the looks on peoples' faces (:O).. Priceless.

LOL when I go into Petsmart to handle the Ball pythons the employees will say like, "Yeah Ball pythons are pretty tame snakes, they will rarely bite anyone" and I'll say something like, "Yeah I know, I have four."

Yeah, I mean I really try to keep it to myself. But honestly, you should just tell them right off the bat. Be honest, if they can't accept you for you who are and what things you love then they are not worth your time if they can't respect you for it. Why do you like cats? Why do you like dogs? Everyone has a favorite pet. It's what i've learned after the list of guys i've chased off after telling them I owned snakes, and want to breed them eventually. Hah. Yeah, I love it when their eyes look like they are going to fall out their head.
Steve. I think I get that reaction quite a few times a day, considering I work full time I tell most everyone who comes in and goes "ew" at the snakes that I have quite a few and most people misunderstand them.

I WISH someone would say that when i was holding our Ball Python but instead we get people who are deathly afraid of them.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Haha, I love it when someone who actually does like snakes come in. I feel like I can be myself and really talk to them. I love talking about reptiles. There are a few members on here who live near me and come see me at times.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I mostly get "You have SIX snakes???? Really??? Six of them???"
Lol. Most people just don't understand how I keep them. Its not like have 6 cats or dogs, haha!

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I only have one, so I get the occasional "Eww..." and the scrunching of the face response, but once I tell them how many DIFFERENT animals I have, I get the, "My god, your house is a ZOO." response. I kinda like that one better. :P
One reaction that will always get me laughing is when I take my ball to a pet store, particularly a big chain store with lots of customers, and they'll see the snake and go, "AHH! She has a snake!"
It's like... well, YEAH, I'm in a pet store, what'd you expect?

LOL I love those reactions! I normally take my Ball pythons in when I can and some people just stare at me like, "Wtf is that young girl doing with that big snake.."

when I told my grandmother I had a pet snake she said that she was on her way to Chapin South Carolina to beat satan outa me , then she called me an athiest, we have worked things out since lol :D (she lives in Lousiana 700 miles from my location in SC)

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I always get a mixed reaction when I tell people that I have fifty snakes.
Some people tell me I'm crazy for having snakes, let alone the amount I have. They then tell me that I am insane when I tell them I used to have Black Mamba's, a King Cobra, and other venomous snakes.
On the other hand, I have had people sit and talk to me for hours about my snakes. Especially when I take some of my snakes into the local pet store that I used to work at.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Wow, lots of you guys take your snakes in public. I have never even considered it.
I don't really bring up my snakes to anyone. It is just not a subject that most people can have an intelligent conversation about. I certainly do not bring it up for the shock value or for the attention, positive or negative. I don't need anyone else to help me enjoy my snakes. I DO however very much enjoy coming across someone that owns some snakes that I have never owned or anyone that is a new or old time snake owner, (I guess any snake owner really). I can talk for hours with them!
My girlfriend teases me about it sometimes. She enjoys holding a snake now and again, but thinks that 9 is too many.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Personally, I don't tell people that I have anything. I have many collections of things. If someone wanted to, they night try to break-in when I'm not home and leave with many thousands of dollars worth of goods. Thank goodness for safes and other deterents.
With the economy being what it is, it's probably not a good thing to discuss with strangers anything that you own.
Just my opinion.

"I won't be coming to your house" Which always makes me want to spout off something creepy like "Good, cuz I don't remember inviting you!" lol:rofl:

Not me - I see no reason to take them in public - it certainly isn't a stress free experience for the snake, and I don't see any benefit for the snake or myself to expose it to who knows what at the pet stores.
Usually when I see someone in public with a snake, it's usually to get attention. And since the general public doesn't understand snakes, they get attention, and you generally can see them enjoying the shock value carrying their snake in public gets them.
I personally prefer the relationship that I have with my snakes in my quiet home environment, without negative attention from the public.
But to each their own, I guess.
I've also got 50 snakes, and people's reactions range from grossed out to fascinated.

One of my aunts won't step foot in my house. Most people seem interested, but would still be pretty scared to walk in my snake room.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Well I work as a teachers aide at a school. So I tell the kids all the time about the snakes. They are really into it....I try to incorporate them into teaching when I get a chance. ya know....there were 5 snakes ....10 more slithered up....how many do you have....lol. They totally love it. I also bring in snake sheds for them all the time. They are hanging up on the white boards...lol BUTTTTTTTT kids tell their parents ....and the parents are like....ugh. I have heard it all. Mostly the man eating snake crap. I just take that as a chance to educate the parents.
But kids are so open to reptiles....they love that stuff. I am having a reptile expo a week from Wednesday for the 2nd and 3rd grade. I actually hired a company to come in and I am doing a presentation and then the kids get to interact with the animals after learning about them. I am soooo excited to teach them about stuff....hopefully maybe they will teach their parents..lol
I have to add...we have a little boy that is blind in one of our classes....and it is soooooooooo cool to let him touch things like the snake shed. To see his face light up is amazing. When we have him touch the eye caps on the shed....or the shape of the jaw or the belly part of the shed. He is just entraced by it. It is really cool and I am very excited to take him aside at after the reptile show to have him really interact with everything.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Well you get different reactions.. I've had more teenage girls interested in the animals than anything. A very good friend of our daughter loves to come over and see the animals.
When you tell people that you have 100+ snakes you get all kind of reactions, from horror, it intrest. Even more so when you tell then that they are in a climate controled room built on to the house..
Over the years you get use to it.. LOL

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I'm from the city (Newark, NJ) Now I live in NC. I always get the "I didn't know brothas like snakes!" or "You sure don't look like somebody that owns snakes!" I guess a black people don't like reptiles or something. Makes me laugh all the time.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I love it too when I am told I have a zoo at home, I never discuss with a person exactly what KIND of snakes I have but just the amount. No one would break into my house with a 160lb Rottweiler Guarding my front door either, haha. These reactions are hilarious, and I do understand that snakes are one of the top phobias on the list but even if they are you shouldn't bash them in front of a person you know has a passion and love for them. That just irritates me, I had a woman a couple weeks ago tell me she'd make purses, boots and what not out of them.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
First question I often get is the "You have 75 snakes?! Are they in cages?"
My response by the way is always the same. "Of course not, they run free. I couldn't even imagine how much time and money it would cost to keep up with 75 cages!!!!" then I change the subject. :)

Freakie has the snakes, I house the rats. You really want a reaction tell people you have an entire building full of breeding rats (hundreds)!!!lol Then watch them shiver.:D

I am surprised no one else has commented on this. With so many people advocating proper care of a snake to reduce stress on the animal, no one has commented on this.
There is no reason to take a snake to the pet store with you. They have their own snakes there if you want to hold a snake. Also, with all of the horror stories... why would you want to even risk exposing your snake to anything at the pet store? Say one of their snakes has an illness, mites, etc. Someone holds it. Then you run into that person and they want to hold your snake. Or they just brush up against you. Shake your hand, etc. Then your snake could get infected.
There is a reason people quarantine new arrivals and handle them last. There is a reason people wash their hands, clean up, etc between their collection and new arrivals. Taking your snake into a pet store just for the shock value seems extremely irresponsible and very much an attention-seeking endeavor at the expense of your snakes health potentially. If you are a professional handler/breeder and are providing some kind of info session, etc are follow safe practices it might be okay- but why not just use their snake(s) to handle? By bringing your prized Albino BP, or any other morph, it only encourages people to go out and make the impulse buy for the "cool" factor.
I just see no reason to bring your personal, healthy, well-adjusted collection into a pet store.
And then someone said they take their snake to school... why on earth on you taking your snake to school? Besides the fact school should be for applying yourself and learning and the snake could be a distraction- I highly doubt your snake feels secure being made a public spectacle outside of it's hides, riding around in your hand/pocket/backpack/travel tub/etc.
If you need the attention/shock value of others by displaying your snakes to people in public- maybe you need to reconsider why you are keeping snakes in the first place.
Just my 2 cents, will probably get blasted. So blast away.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
It's hard, I love them so much and would LOVE to talk about them more, but in general public I tend to keep it quiet. That's definently due to experience. I run a nature center during the summer with snakes on display though, so when I get chatting to people about them, sometimes they ask if they're mine and I spill the beans. Usually they're surprised, but since they like snakes enough to be there learning about them, they usually arn't too judgemental.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
As Aeries mentioned, it is difficult to talk openly about keeping snakes, or other exotic reptiles. That's why I'm glad for reptile shows and online communities. The reactions I get are generally of an off put nature though. When I mention my snake or lizards or frogs peoples general reaction is "uh huh" or "why would you have those?" My Grandfather(although I love him to death) always asks me what I will do when my ball python gets 20 feet long. I always respond, nothing becuase he never will get that long.
In my experience people get confused as to why I keep reptiles becuase they think they are not fun at all, or I can't interact with them so what is the point. My answer is usually that keeping reptiles is more complex than that.
As Laura asked in her OP, my reptiles did assist in the loss of a friend(for the better...she was a bit nuts >.>)

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
i tell people i have snakes, lizards, tortoise, if they got a problem, i tell them to go.........o............f......................f i really dont care, if people judge you by your animals, then they really aren't your friends, i have a bad aunt that tells people i worship the devil cause i keep snakes and it dont help i listen to metal music, raise of hands, how my people like metal and raise snakes, i ment come on, half the time at expos most of the best breeder i buy from look like they are old enough to remember seeing elvis alive or Nixon as president. they love the beach boys and yanni. so yea, sorry to get off on a wild ride, thats why i don't partake in family activities, heck my gf gets it more than me, casue she is a girl and doesn't go eghhhh!! to snakes aswell

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
i can't wait till im through with collage and have a snake room, all to its self, mabye no one will come over

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Along those same lines Bowser. I remember my grandmother(whom I also love every much) was worried that I was in the occult becuase I liked dungeons and dragons years ago, though she is absolutely fascinated by my reptiles.
I told a friend of mine, when I have my own home I will have a reptile room where all of my reptiles will be kept, so if someone comes over who is offended by reptiles will still feel welcome. To that he responed ":explitive: that! if they are offended by reptiles they don't deserve your company!"
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
When people hear that I have 11 snakes, I get mixed reactions. I get questions like.."Aren't you afraid the snakes will get out and eat your cats?" and "Are they poisonous?"
But bringing up snakes in conversation with some people has actually won a few people over. My sister is now not as scared of snakes as she used to be and has willingly held a few of my snakes. One of my friends is getting a ball python this year (I'm helping her set up an enclosure and such). She is getting a male pastel. My older sister has gotten a spider ball python, which will be on a breeding loan to me next season. :)
And I will admit, I have taken my ball pythons in to pet stores before. (don't do it anymore though). I found it to be a great opportunity to educate people. They would come up to me and ask questions like "How long will it get?" "What do you feed it?" etc. I always made sure they used the hand sanitizer before touching my snake and I was able to give them information. Now I have seen people do this the wrong way. Once I was working and looked out the window and saw this teenager standing outside with his ball python wrapped around his neck. The temperature outside was definitely too cold for a ball python to be outside.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I can tell you that having a sweperate snake room is a blessing. My wife is terrified of the snakes but since they are in their own room off the house. She has full run of the house with out worrying about running into me messing with the snakes.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
i dont really talk to people about my snakes or reptiles unless they are fellow herp lovers. Everyone normally asks if they can come by one day during feeding to see how they eat and how there housed. The worst reaction i get is from girls that dont like them and tell me they wont come in my room but they always do anyway haha.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I think I would be lost if there were no reptile forums, shows or things like that where i can actually talk to people I have things in common with. Honestly, I don't mind telling people I have snakes just to see their reactions. Today, at work a woman came in today and was looking at the jumbo rats we have, and asked me this.
"Who is their right mind would own a snake big enough to eat that?"
I kind of just smiled, and looked around innocently. She caught on and was like "Wow, isn't that like illegal or something?"
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
If people have a problem with my snake then all right, I understand. I dont tell them to screw off or anything, its just like well I enjoy it. If we show agression to non herp lovers it only hurts our image. We are better than them... we dont need to go to their level, we are above them. Just my 2 cents....
:)

I completely agree.
Though, it does get hard when you are the only one in your family who likes reptiles. I get a lot of crap for it, sucks sometimes.

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I get a lot of mixed reactions too. Such as with my big female, ball pythons only get as thick as a soda can and my friend was like "that snake could swallow an infant!" I just reply "no dude, do you see how thick a soda can is? Do you see how thick a baby is? It will not happen!"

I regularly bring in my snakes to my young cousin's school for his show and tell. It's not for any kind of "cool factor." I'm showing those children that snakes are not something to be terrified of, and educating them about snakes. I've also brought in salamanders, tree frogs, anoles, and any other animal i have at the time. While it may be somewhat stressful for the snake, i think that educating kids not to be terrified of these animals is important. i agree with the petstore bit though; I'd be terrified they'd get sick.
I tell people I have snakes every chance I get. I mean, it's not the second thing I say when I introduce myself, but it eventually comes up. Whether they're disgusted or not, they always ask questions, and it's often a good chance to explain why some of their misconceptions about snakes are wrong. Of course, I get a lot of "That's disgusting!" and then they'll never talk to me again, but hey, animals are such a big part of my life that if I can't talk about them with you and you refuse to listen, then I guess we don't have too much to talk about.
I get the Zoo comment a lot as well when I list off what animals I have, and most people are almost always interested in them. It's a good chance get rid of some of the negativity surrounding snakes and reptiles :gj:

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
My gf's mom was on the phone with my gf's grandma, letting her know that we were back home and didn't have any issues with driving through the dangerous road weather.
Here is the gist of the conversation as best I could hear it:
G'ma: So did Peter come home with any new animals?
Mom: A couple, and Beth came home with a reptile too!
G'ma: Oh NOOOOO, she DIDN'T! Gross, ewww, why would beth do that, I mean, SHE'S not a boy!
Mom: It's a chameleon
G'ma: Oh I LOVE chameleons, they are so pretty!!
lol.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
Well my son has already told everyone in his school that we have lots of snakes and now I know why the teachers dont talk to me unless its about him at school lol!
But where I work I deal with truck drivers alot and once I get to know the regular ones we BS alot. Some have told me about their dog or their cat so when I say I have 30 snakes with more on the way, 2 dogs, a cat, a big aquarium and a lizard... Yeah :O I always get a first reaction of shock but then they just want to know about them. What kind, how big they get, what they eat. So its fun talking about them because people are usually facinated and I get to educate them. They still think I'm crazy though
I think what freaks people out more than the snakes is when they find out I have 3 different types of rodents I'm breeding for them lol!
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
When I say I have 27 reptiles, 23 of which are snakes people usually go "WOW" or "bless your mother" but I have never gotten a reaction of a smart-azz trying to tell me my snake will eat me in my sleep. Most of the time it's when I talk to adults after teaching children educational programs, so I guess they figure I know a lot more about the animals than they do from the news. :)

Haha! That's really funny :D
But yeah, I mean I have to agree there really is not reason to be bringing your snake around with you during the summer to a petstore. I am not allowed to remove the bigger snakes unless a customer is interested in purchasing it, no one is in the store or I am cleaning. Since so many people are afriad of them, I could get in trouble for freaking out people. haha.
-
Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
I think since I started breeding the reactions are different, than they were when I had 5 or less.
Back then people tended to respond with a "cool...." sort of thing. Which to me is just a big ol' *MEH*. Hard to have an intelligient conversation with a person that is just standing with that goofy look on their face.
And usually follow it up with some misinformed story such as "My dad's cousin had a mamba and it ate his dog!!!"
*Bruce exits stage left*
Now that I have 70 plus, I never actually tell anyone, but if I am at a dinner party, house party, etc. one of my friends almost always brings it up. Or I get cornered by someone following who timidly asks "can I ask you about your snakes?"
Those are the people I like because they want to actually learn about it, and not just the myth busting, but they like to hear about it from an emotive stance as well... what it is like to keep them, why I pursue this hobby, etc.
But whenever you have a conversation with a non-snake person about snakes you have to learn when to shut up. :)
At some point their interest wanes and you have to know when to stop talking or you look like "that guy"... the one at the party trying to be cool talking about his snakes. :rolleye2:

Re: I have 10 snakes, you have WHAT? (peoples reactions!)
oh I been called all the word and the looks loland i only up to 19 right now. what funny I get some people ask for my number and saythey will call me ifthey ever find one in the yard or what not. Since i make it plan most my aquired snakes are from people that are no longer willing to properly care for them. I also point ou that I will remove any snake from a house shed were ever alive since they do moer good than harm.

Now that I have 70 plus, I never actually tell anyone, but if I am at a dinner party, house party, etc. one of my friends almost always brings it up. Or I get cornered by someone following who timidly asks "can I ask you about your snakes?"

I know what ya mean, if I am minding my own buisness whether it be at work and i'm cleaning an employee will be like "oh well.. she's the snake lady, she has 10 snakes" or out with a friend who boasts about them. I can never really keep it a secret. I try. But it's hard, 'cause like you said you have to know when to shut up. I like talking about snakes, and get carried away quite easily. I don't have many people to talk to about them, except when I am at shows or on here. So once I get talking, it's hard to quit!
I agree, I love it when someone who is willing to learn and actually is interested comes to me and asks about them.

I did not say I that I take them to school! I use them to teach...the idea of them!! I do take in their sheds. I am having a one time reptile expo for the kids to learn about lots of different reptiles. And yes at that time...I will be taking them. They will be seperated from the other reptiles though. Will this stress them out...a couple of them...probably. But I have to say I am excited about the chance to teach children about reptiles....I have to do it. I don't think this will be any more stressful for them than a reptile show would be. These children know the rules...they understand they have to be quite...they understand...no clapping..stuff like that. Although this is something I am funding......it is a school sponsored event for the second and third grade.
Also I have to highly agree with not taking them out to another pet store. You never know what you could pick up. Also you never know what someone else was handling and how that could transfer to your snake.

I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to the the 4th post in the thread.
And to the other person who bring's them to their cousins school, once again, I was referring to people taking them to school. I did point out in my post that if it was some kind of info session being conducted by a professional handler/breeder, that is totally different than someone just bringing in a snake to show people to get their reaction. Which was stated once again, in the 4th post in this thread.
