Does ur bp hiss?
Lately my bp has been hissing at me everytime i go to pick him up. He never strikes or bites, but he always makes that "hissing" sound soon as i touch him

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
Yeah for some snakes its a normal thing they do, but never bite. For others, its the first sign that "your gonna get bit if you piss me off anymore."

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
thanks, so if i get bit, what should i do? someone told me not to pull away from it

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
I've heard pulling away can damage their mouths? I've been bit twice by an over-eager feeder, and it hurts much less than you think it will. Generally, once they bite, if you don't jerk around, they'll just let go. My Spider has hissed a few times, but that was when I first got him, and only when I moved things in his cage around too much. Now he's much more relaxed and friendly, thanks to frequent handling :)

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
Ok thats what it is because i just moved him to a new tank, thats probably why he's acting like that. How do i upload a default pic? I have 2 images in the gallery but i cant figure out how to make either pic my default

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
Usually when they strike its just a back away from me strik. They don't normally bite and hang on. So if they strike they wont be on long enough for you to be too concerned aboout pulling away.
I have seen an instance where a snake got stuck on a hand after a strick but wiggled off the hand after a second or two. The snake did lose a tooth in the hand but is fine.

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
BP bites don't hurt much. They are barely more than a scratch, so there is no need to worry about it. If you do get bit, try not to pull away, although that will be hard because it is a natural reflex. Pulling away can actually make the bite worse (it still won't be bad), and sometimes a tooth can break off in your skin. You should be sure to wash the area thoroughly with antibacterial soap, as a precautionary measure.
To help your snake get used to being handled, always stroke it gently on its back before you pick it up. This way they are less likely to get startled. Also, I think it is best to handle a nervous snake for frequent but brief sessions, as long as they don't go off food.
One other thing I think is worth mentioning since you say your snake only started doing this recently, are you sure it is a hiss? Odd breathing sounds, such as whistles or wheezes, can be signs of respiratory infections.

If you are concerned if your snake is wheezing you need to take it to a good herp vet. If you are unsure about being able to tell the difference between a hiss or wheeze I'd take it in to the vet just to be sure. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hissing is not a problem, its part of being a snake...
Eventually he will get the idea that you aren't out to hurt him and he will stop. just ignore it.

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
Most of my babies "huff" at me now and then. That is my name for it since they do it with a closed mouth.
Generally speaking, they only do it if I startle them, so I always move slowly when I pick them up, and gently stroke their back or side to let them know it's me.
The only one who never huffs, is the only one to bite me, so go figure.

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
One time my BP took a deep breath and exhaled. angllady2 called it when she said it was a "huff". But other than that, my pythons are pretty chilled out.

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
My het lavendar abino male always hisses at me. I just pick him up and go "Seriously????? For Real????"
He's all bluff, but for some, it's their way to tell you to "hiss off"

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
lol.....it cracks me up when they hiss. I had never heard it until I got Samantha....she is a total spitfire!! She thought she would hiss at us when she had "captured" the table leg.... Such a lovely little lady...
As far as the bite....do not pull away...their teeth are pointed backward and not only can you pull their teeth out....you can also rip your skin. They typically just let go.

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
mine hissed for about the first day while i was working out the kinks in the cage but now she doesn't but usually if you grab them to fast they will hiss so i always touch her tail before i grab her as to not startle her.

Re: Does ur bp hiss?
My super pastel girl blows up real big and hisses when ever I pick her up but thats it. She never strikes at me. All bark and no bite. Its pretty funny though when she blows her self up and trys to act bigger than her 125G self is:rofl:
-
My enchi girl doesn't bite, but she hisses every time I go to pick her. It's kind of comical actually... But she does it because I dropped her (yikes!) the first week I had her.
-
My normal does that sometimes. Usually if it's I reach in too fast and startle him, but he's fine as soon as he's out of the tank. I think it's normal, it's probably just a fake warning like "if you pick me up so help me..." then they are like "fine, whatever" lol. :P
