Cold To The Touch and Open Vent?
I'm not sure if this is normal or could be an issue, but when I pick my BP up, he's rather cold to the touch. I have his warm side get up to about 93 and the ambient temp is around 70. He's been this way since I got him so I never thought of it being an issue until today when I was holding him and I thought that I should check to see if this is ok.

As for the open vent thing, I've noticed that when I hold him, he'll open his vent and then close it a few times...What is he doing lol?

Your cool side/ ambient temps should be 82 degrees, not 70. That's why he feels cold.

The vent sounds like he's attempting to musk.

I can get the temp up but I'll have to use heat lamps which I hate. I'm in a basement suite so it gets rather cold down here. I'll just have to suck it up until it heats up in general.

    ?

Can you post pics of your setup please, your kind of vague as to your husbandry.

There really is no big deal if you use heat lamps as long as you are good at maintaining the humidity. I have a tank set up for one of mine without any probs. I'd get on that asap, low temps= RI and other nasties..

A heat lamp is better than nothing. Cold temps can get you an easy RI, trsut me, I would know. I delt with a minor case of RI with my Kingsnake a while back, and injecting him wasn't so bad, but the cost for a vet definitely was.

The setup I have is a 30 gallon tank, a mix of eco earth and aspen for bedding as that helps with humidity, two hides and a large water dish. I have some fake plants in there too. I obviously have a uth and have the mesh lid covered with tin foil. As soon as I introduce the heat lamp, I start to lose humidity. I can keep it where it needs to be but not without having to mist every day.

No doubt. Keeping the humidity up with a heat lamp is going to be a challenge. If I had control over my suites temps I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue.

there is a type of moss i put it in a platic bowl and set it under the light the water evaporates = humidity

the sphagnum moss < dunno if a good idea petco told me to use it lol

even went as far as to cut cardboard cut outs to go around the light and lid itself

i leave about an inch on top of the cage for air flow since u dont want stagnant air :(

i live in alaska so not very humid here lol and i have to use heat lamps since petco told me i had to and i spent 200 plus on just lights lol next month my bp will have ceramic heat emitters though :)

also if u feel u might have a temp isue under his hide i bought a digi therm with a probe wire and i leave it under his hide to measure that temp by itself

99% of the time they will always feel cool to the touch since out body temps are higher than their warm sides. The vent being open can be result of a poop or pee and or musk. If its open all the time for no reason it could be some damage in the area from a possible probe.
