recommended docile boa under 6foot?
Looking to breed as well as for family pet....a nice docile species or subspecies of boa....I like the Dumeril and the hogg island etc.
any suggestions? or do you like my suggestions?

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
Dumeril's are pretty good boas, but females can reach 8 ft. I would consider a male, even though they may get 6-7 ft.
Rosy boas aren't bad either, and so aren't Kenyan Sand boas. Maybe try looking into those species?

I love my Hog Isle Boa! Here's a pic of her checking out BP.net:

She's about 6 feet long, docile (although she has a tremendous feeding response), and is a great pet.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
A male columbian, or any of the central american boas should stay relatively small..... kenyan sand boas are a rare, unique and quite small boa that would be a cool addition to any collection and are relatively cheap...

I was thinking the same thing lol

Most of the insular island boas stay 6' and under, as well as the male Peruvian Long Tails (boa constrictor longicauda) and alot of the Mexican boas. Here is a link to Rio Bravos website where they cover most of the Central and South American species.

i have a male dumeril and a male salmon red tail and i think the dumeril is a better pet, but for breeding i like the red tail.

Dumeril's boas are definitely awesome to keep, and they have the strangest but coolest personalities. The only downside is that they are finicky eaters. That really gets frustrating. Besides that, I don't see any other downside.

I love the dums!
My young male is a massive pig. Chomps down a large rat without hessitation. Then minutes later he's looking for round 2!
My female is a little more finicky. She eats when she's in the mood. But I don't stress. They are too easy to overfeed, so when full grown, it is fine to go a month or so between meals if she just isn't getting that hungry (rarely have to wait that long, but it happens).
And both are just super docile. Never nipping or hissing.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
There are tons of different Boas but I would get a Brazilian Rainbow Boa or a Amazon Tree Boa.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
Just my opinion
Dumerials - nice but they are a heavy body snake and do get big even my males are 7-8'
Colombians - the best IMO not as big around as a dumerial but can get 8'
Salmon or Hypos - Most have the temperament of the colombians but way smaller 5-6'
Central Americans - small? sometimes, but not mine and the 30+ I have are not nice.
Nicks - in with the centrals nippy.
Brazilian rainbows - very pretty, they get long but much more slender
I never had rosy boas or sand boas so I can't say
If you were talking to me with your kids I would steer you to a salmon that is about a year old.
The reason for this is because most boas are nippy until they are about a year old. I call it the survival mode. If I stand tall and hiss and strike at you, you will not eat me.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
I wouldn't pass up checking out any of the rainbow boas, they are nice too, and on the smaller side!!!:)

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
Not every snake is a perfect example of its species...I'd say a Brazilian since my girl is the sweetest snake ever, she puts up with so much with nothing as much as a hiss.

What Salmons are you talking about? I thought they were columbians...
Oh yeah, calker cay, pearl islands, corn island boas are all smaller boas with a little more originality then the typical hogg island, which I would also recomend. ~Caylan.S.~

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
I may as well add in the Columbian Rainbow boa. They are definitely beautiful, I had to deal with some on Saturday at my volunteer job. They were so beautiful up close and their eyes are quite amazing. Definitely a boa I wouldn't mind keeping.

Salmon boas are also called hypo's. Rich Ihle named the first salmon boa for its color
Pearl Islands, corn islands are very nice small boas but cost more.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
The sonoran boas stay small and have (generally) wonderful temperaments. My little Tarahumara boy is an awesome snake to hand to people who may be a bit nervous about handling snakes. He's calm as can be. He's also about 40", and is a young adult.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
I have Sabogaes, which are also called Pearl Island boas, and Nics. Both stay under six feet. Both my Sabogaes are docile, other than snapping at the cage when I walk by. Some of my Nics are docile, while others are not. The ones that are not are calming down though, since I gave them hides. You could also go with a male Columbian BCI. My adult male is around five feet, and docile as can be.

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
I would go with a Dumeril, I had one and it ate anything I put in there! Great personality and just a great looking snake!

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
I kind of like the Rough-scaled Sand Boas... Been thinking about one

Re: recommended docile boa under 6foot?
MY personal favorites arew the crawl cay and hog island dwarfs.
I'll agee with boasandballs though, most boas can be snappy as youngsters, especially the dwarfs.
Our dwarf boas are here:
