I got me a BOLOMETER
At least that's what my husband tells me what it is.
So now I'm shooting my cats (78.4), me (89.1). Ember (79.4 - the corns are fine at ambient), Paradox (86.8 - on the warm side of his cage).
It's a Pro Exotics temp gun, cost $25.

We also have a drawer full of perfect sheds...(really I do). And last but not least I tell my non herp friends snakey stories...and I still can't figure out why they don't get how cute they are. :weirdface

I don't think the pro exotics temp guns have a laser so you don't have to worry about cooking an eyeball.
remember that the temp gun only gives you an average of the temp within a circle 'X' far away from the gun. Most of them are 1:1 so the temp is a 1 inch diameter circle 1 inch away from the device, or a 12 inch circle 12 inches away from the device. Any further away then 12 inches and it's not going to be very accurate.

Re: I got me a BOLOMETER
I've got my UTH's slapped on the side of the cages, not under, cause I'm not comfortable with the thought of a thermostat or rheostat possibly failing. Of my five, Enigma is the only one that actually plasters up against it, so it's the only one that has the Acu-rite probe stuck to it (on the inside of the glass).
This is the funny thing. The Acu-rite shows it at about 90F, but the temp gun registered it 103F. Obviously gonna have to play with checking spot temps some more, but I do think I'll move it up the glass half an inch to an inch.

Which is why I waited till I could afford a 12:1.
It's nice to shoot from a foot away and still be accurate :)

Did more than one cat, they all register pretty cold, 73 to 78. At least their fur does, noses come up warmer, around 90. The cats don't like the device at all, I'm wondering if they're detecting something it's emitting.

What you're measuring is the outside of the cats fur. If you put it next to the skin the temp would be higher. remember that what you're measuring is the outside of the first thing that the beam contacts. I've known people who attempt to measure the temperature of their cage by aiming through the glass. If they do that what they're actually measuring is the suface temperature of the glass on the outside of the cage which won't give you a good idea of how warm the inside of the cage is.
