next step up from bp?

Re: next step up from bp?

Re: next step up from bp?
also want in somewhat docile. python or boa...

Re: next step up from bp?
Best to do some research and find what you feel you'd be happy with and still be able to meet the basic needs. After all, it is your decision and your responsability.
Next for me would definitely be a Carpet Python.

I thought I gave some pretty good advice... To each their own I guess.

With all due respect that you mention, what reply were you reading?? I sense not an ounce of sarcasm or disrespect in Sarin's reply to your post. Only a piece of advice that completely makes sense.
No matter what opinions you get in reply, it is ultimately your decision to make, as well as your responsibility to research and determine the temperment, size and care measurements you are willing and in more ways than one, ABLE to put forth in making sure the given animal is well taken care of and maintained.
Someone on this thread could swear on their respective religion's holy book that a blood python would be your "logical" next step due to their personal success with said animal and the fact that it meets your size requirements and in their experience was just as docile. You go and purchase one and six months later you've been bitten how many times?
In short, I think Sarin's reply makes perfect sense and I feel you've slightly jumped the gun in calling the replier disrespectful.
Also; I'd agree with Sarin that a Carpet Python would be a good choice.

Re: next step up from bp?
I have to agree with the Carpet choice myself. I have two now and they are both wonderful pets. One I traded my Columbian Red Tail Boa for and the other was more or less of a rescue. I admit I was a bit intimidated by them at first, but they have become very dear members of my collection and are very unique and fun to have. They hold a special place in my collection and to be honest, I find the black and yellow color combos extremely striking and attractive, but again, that's just me.

From what I have researched, Borneos seem to be pretty simple to care for. I think their faces are so adorable, and look less serious than a Blood's face. Borneos are on my snake list, hopefully this year I can work with them.

See these to quotes contradict each other either you want advice (which is an opinion) or you do not (shown by your response in the second quote), Maybe a Boa is the next step up from a BP for that poster.
If it were me I was say a Aussie python like a Woma

Womas are awesome pythons, I wouldn't mind having one of those either.

Re: next step up from bp?
Man some of you gals and guys are looking way to hard into this thread lol
Honestly if i were you i would go with a BRB they are simply awesome looking and dont get that big. Ive never held a jungle but I have heard they can be nippy both species but i guess with lots of handling and love they will tame down.

Depends how large. If it's a hatchling, you can try better.

Re: next step up from bp?
just found 225 for an 08 male???

Re: next step up from bp?
getting mixed signals from local herp guys. are borneos good pets?
-
Re: next step up from bp?
i wold go with a BCI boa, or blood/short tail python. thats just my personal preference if I was going to get a bigger snake. Possibly a jungle/jag carpet too. brazilian rainbow boa would be good too if you can meet the housing requirements.

Re: next step up from bp?
Carpet!!
I have 2 Irian Jayas and they are mostly always out, rarely hide. They have wonderful personalities, are very 'friendly' and easy to handle. Nice display snakes, all around nice snakes!
My son has a BRB and the stupid thing, albeit beautiful, is always hiding :)

Re: next step up from bp?
I'm surprised no one has said Hogg Island boa. They are great next step. I of course went straight for a burm, but it's ultimately what you like best. I recommend a hogg though. Carpets are great too, bloods can be tricky but awesome. Have fun with what ever you choose! ~Caylan.S.~

Re: next step up from bp?
Depends, what kind of animal are you looking for?
Active snake? Lazy?
Big snake? Small snake?
Arboreal? Terrestrial?

a borneo is as good as any pet if that is what you want and provide it with what it needs to feel safe and secure. Great snakes if cared for properly and a definite step up from a bp.

Agree! There are many dwarf locality boas out there that only get around 5/6 feet. Go to vin russo's page to see details on size for many of these species.

Good point. Borneos are amazing but they do get big. Big as in heavy. They may not be as long as a boa but they get very thick and are prone to being overweight if not fed properly. Any snake can be nippy. Just do alot of research, ask alot of questions, and handle your new snake regularly so it doesnt become hard to handle as an adult.
Really the decision is up to you in the end. Maybe you can tell us what you really want and we can tell about the differences between them?

Re: next step up from bp?
thank you guys. a bunch of people and some web site spooked me away from the borneo so i ended up with a 4.5 foot female hypo columbian red tail. orangish tan with rust and gray saddles and pinkish sides. VERY mellow. $230... may have paid a bit much but it was what i wanted.

You could get a male Columbian BCI. They stay fairly small. Probably around 5 or 6 feet, and much less girth than females. All of my Columbians are very docile. There are also dwarf boas that max out at around five feet. Check out http://www.cuttingedgeherp.com/ and http://www.riobravoreptiles.com/ for some info.
Edit - I guess I should have read the entire post before posting. Grats on your new addition.

Re: next step up from bp?
was about to say Boa Constrictor but the OP beat me to it ;)

Re: next step up from bp?
Congrats on your new addition. I'm waiting on the weather for my new Caulker Cay to be shipped from Vin Russo, and I got a Costa Rican BCI that should be arriving at the same time... :please: warm weather, warm weather...
