Width seems to be equal, maybe a tad bit wider because of the legs, I don't see that being a problem though. I would say it's fine. A better measurement would of been to hold the snake directly over the mouse btw, and in the first picture the body is rotated.

I always go by weight (10-15% rule).

Those stick on thermometers however, I would ditch those personally (assuming theyre for the BP). Theyre great at measuring the temperature of whatever you stick them too, so not much use for a BP.

Well I stand by my original statement that your snake can eat it. The other picture statement was moreless for the future.

It's close... She might be able to get it down. I personally wouldn't try though.

Re: can she eat this rat?? (more pics)
It will be close, but I believe she can, that rat is a tad bit wider then her, but after she constricts it, it will go down a bit. Plus the fur makes the rat seem a little wider then it actually is.

    EDIT:
Maybe push the legs inwards a bit more before you do.

alright cool man. ill try. and if its a little big i dont think it will hurt her. i mean unless it was like way bigger. but this big even if it was a tad bigger i dont think it will do anything. i mean they can stretch. haha

I think she could do it but how long have you had her? She looks (in a few of those pics) to be very thin...maybe it is just the pic but looks like some loose skin. I would personally feed smaller more often until she gets some feedings down. But that is me and I am paraniod as all get out.

well she eats great. she was really thin when i got her. she is finally beefing up... bout time. i just want to try rats. alot of people say they are better for them. so i want to try. this is the smallest they had. so i just want to know for sure if she can get it down. that would be great if she could. she needs to grow.

Not that it's better for them, just when they get bigger rats have suitable sizes to where you don't have to feed 3 mice per feeding.

Re: could she eat this rat???
Ok...so you have had her and she has had some feedings down...perfect. How often are you feeding her? The only reason I ask is because in that first pic in the first post she looked really skinny...could of been the angle.

I am dealing with that right now with a newbie I picked up at a pet store...just an ity bity baby and we are trying to put her on an every 3 day feed schedule until she looks healthier...??

Re: could she eat this rat???
um i feed her every sunday. and she refuses any other food besides on sunday never wednesday or thursday. she has to be fed on sunday. its funny. shes really picky. i just need to know bout the rat. cause if she could get it down bigger food would be way better. cause she eats a big ole mouse every sunday. but that rat is a tad bigger. i just want her to be able to eat bigger food. cause she will only eat once a week. so i figured a bigger mouse would be better. but i saw the rat and it looked bout the same size as the mice i get. just like a size bigger. so i just want to know if she can get it down

alright. cool. thanks alot. im just worried bout her. i love her to death. shes just so little. she was a skinny little girl when i got her. the guy knew alot about them though. they own like a store just for snakes. he told me noone will take her cause she was so small. he said she needed a good home. so i got and she is finally growing. she isnt my first snake my cousin has alot. i always helped with his. so i know a good bit about them. i just wanted to see if she will get it down. she is getting much bigger. and she is so sweet. she loves to be held she will lay on my chest. and just chill. she has never bit me or anything!

aww...that is such a good story! They say that the same size rat has more grams to it...so it is a good idea. I need to switch mine ot rats but I am such a chicken...I know I need to take the plunge...lol

My newbie sounds allot like yours ...she is the sweetest baby ever...poor little thing has stuck head shed and eyecaps and is so skinny but she is just a little tiny love bug.

lol. yeah. ive heard they are better. so im trying. just give it a try. make sure they arent to big. a little bigger than the snake probly wouldnt really hurt it at all. i mean in the wild the will most likely go for it! and thanks bout the story thing. haha. add me as a friend. i need more :)

Re: could she eat this rat???
    Hi,

I agree she could probably eat it but it is a little larger than normally recommended.

I would make sure the temps in her enclosure are bang on to prevent any problems with digestion and give her an extra day or two after eating before thinking about handling or anything like that.

Re: could she eat this rat???
I'd feed that to her with zero worries. She can take it and be just fine. No squishing of the rat is necessary - she'll take care of it when she eats it. Might take her longer than you're used to to eat it, but no big deal.

Re: could she eat this rat???
I say just feed her the rat and watch if she has trouble take it out.. I give my blood which is about the same size as your BP rats that size and she has them down like four flat tires... As does my pastel he gets live but still the same size too.. just feed and watch.

    Cheers

Re: could she eat this rat???
The reason they say to make sure it's the same diameter as the biggest part of the snake is because a lot of times you may have to go a tad smaller, or a tad bigger, and it's ok. It won't hurt the snake, and it may even take them longer to digest. I've seen some snakes take down some prey bigger then what that rat was to the bp. The thing is with digesting like dr del stated. The larger the prey, longer to digest. As long as your temps are on the lower side and stay spot on, she'll digest it with no problems.

Re: could she eat this rat???
Looks to me like it could take a rat pup. But I don't think its a good idea, ur snake looks a wee bit smaller than mine and she's pretty skinny. I Haven't even moved on to rat pups yet.

Just feed her a couple of mice or a large mouse, theres no reason to stretch he out like that.

    Heres my snake.

Re: could she eat this rat???
Wow. I'm surprised at the number of people who seem uncertain if that snake can swallow that rat. Yes! She definitely can! Snakes can swallow some really big meals.

The real question is whether or not she should. As Dr. Del (I think) pointed out, the real issue isn't with her being able to swallow it, but more of a digestion issue. Sometimes when snakes eat particularly large meals, they will end up regurging because they can't digest that much food fast enough.

However, this rat does not seem big enough in relation to that snake for even that to be a concern. Since it is a bigger meal than she is used to, give her a little longer than usual to digest. Also, as Robin mentioned, don't be surprised if it takes her longer to get it down than usual.

Re: could she eat this rat???
When I feed a snake a large meal I make sure her hotspot is nice and warm and I usually give her a longer period before the next meal.

By the same token if I feed a smaller item I will probably feed a bit sooner next time.

Thats just how I do it.

My question is if she has only been fed mice, will she go for the rat? Time will tell;)
