Ultramel aka ultramelanistic

Who was the 1st breeder to produce & prove the morph "ultramel"

Hi,

Eric Crider was the first person to work with them in the US I think.

From the little I can remember they came from a wild caught animal sold by Emanuel Noah.

Then they were known as crider line caramels and lately some smart people have changed the name to ultramels and jacked up the price. Just as I was saving up to buy one the devious swines. :rofl:

He only talks to the big guys as he is the major exporter out of Africa (or Ghana at any rate ) iirc. He simply doesn't ship out to regular end buyers. :(

Crystalpalacereptiles gets shipments from him - But I warn you ultramels are in the £2k price bracket and not all that likely to drop anytime soon.

Is “ultramel” really short for “ultramelanistic”? I guess I never thought where the name came from but "ultamelanistic" would make me think of a very dark snake not a reduced/”hypomelanistic” like snake.

Also, is it true that the snakes Ernie Wagner had years and years ago that where the original caramels (and different than what later got the name caramel) where actually ultramels but took too long to become an established morph so lost the name? Pretty trippy that ...

I think it's supposed to be short for "Ultra-caramel"

I honestly don't know on the line histories. I think NERD proved what we call caramels in 1996?

And obviously crider line/ ultramels aren't compatible with that line - and I seem to remember someone talking about a third line that was also not compatible and trying to combine them all?

I may just have been dreaming but a triple homozygous caramel combo sounds incredible.

Hopefully somone who knows more info will see the thread and give us the skinny. :gj:

I like the name ultramel for a morph but I agree......in this case the morph doesn't look like what it sounds like to me, if that makes sense???

Ernie did have at least one "caramel" that was different from today's caramel line.

Hey Dr Del, word I heard from a friend in your neck of the woods was that 'Ultramels' have been sold as regular caramels over there for several years now so once they decided to sell them as their own line there have already been many animals, which are likely now breeding age, sold for less then they're going for now. So, there might be deals to be had already.

I am also working with a caramel that is not compatible with the line out there but i do not thik she is a ultramel time will tell

If I remember right, they were thought to not be genetic? I remember Vin Russo talking about it on Reptile Radio. Apparently he's had the genes running around in his collection for quite a while without realizing it.

I have seen an ultramel and a caramel side by side and there is no comparison. The ultramel is a million times more colorful and brighter.

The caramel looks like a normal next to the ultramel. There is no mistaking one for the other. Pictures can be decieving but seeing them live there is no way to confuse the two IMO.
