Needs some help asap

Allright so i took this bp into my home because this family was treating it like crap and it was skinny and just not good looking... So i took it in qt it and then fed it cause it needed to eat bad.... Now i fed it took it great no problem i fed it a weaned rat as well and its already prolly 2 ft long and could down prolly a small rat no problem but i figure go small since it looked like it hadent eaten forever... So i fed it and it struck coiled everything well ive been monitoring and noticed it has been taking forever for it to swallow it... Now it has been over about 1 and half and still hasent gotten it down and the worst part is it has squeezed the rats guts out of its stomach and still trying to eat it... I dont know what to do never have had this happen Needs some advice quick do i try and take it out or do i let it try and eat it remember the guts are hanging out of the rats side right and the snake is like trying to tear it apart by constricting more and more

It might not manage it but wait until it gives up on it's own.

You will probably want to clean the cage and possibly even the snake afterwards whatever the outcome - use damp paper towel to try and wipe the worst off the snake but if it is really stressing it out then stop. You really don't want to freak it into a regurge.

Rats shouldn't burst though so either it was previously defrosted and re-frozen or you need to change your defrost system a bit.

It might be an idea to use the weights to judge prey as well as the "no thicker than the widest part of the snake" rule though.

If the snake hasn't eaten for a while smaller meals are a good idea for the first few feedings.

yeah tjust give hiem a little time some times they really slow about eating specially if watched. I got one who won't really eat if I watch hiem but once i either leave he room or don't mess with him the prey goes really fast. he busted gut part no biggie just a mess. ( one reason to use stuff like paper towels and blank newspaper .) but I likgt soaking and a wipe down should hel phime a little also make suer he got plenty of water cause he may be dehydrated some too.

Yea that is what i thought too i will post a pic of what i mean thanks for the info i basically for the defrosting method is stick it in a baggie and then hot water and let it thaw out that way but i may have left it in the water to long idk but here are some pics thanks

Also lets say it is getting stressed out am i gonna have to take the rat out of the snakes mouth or will the snake be able to do that it self

If he can't swallow it he will eventually let go himself.

If you reach your hand in there it's asking to get bitten for no good reason.

Their teeth curve backwards so getting it out of his mouth isn't going to be a simple act if he doesn't agree with you. :P

Just leave him. If he's hungry, he'll eat, no matter how long it takes. If it gets too cold, and he decides not to eat, or he's not actually hungry, he'll let go and slither away. May scatter some rat-stuff as he leaves, but you'll be able to clean it up with some paper towels and spray (we use the chlorhexadine here).

We've had a few rats pop in the past. Whether thawing the XLG in the room overnight or using hot water. Some of our snakes are very aggressive hunters.... very hard, fast strike (sometimes even before the rat gets close enough) and very tight, hard squeezes.

And too, like the earlier poster, if he's in such poor condition, he's very likely dehydrated and you'll want to go smaller prey for a few feedings so he's less likely to regurge. I've had to do that with a couple of our rescues.

I agree with what everyone else has suggested - just leave it in there, and if the snake rejects it, take it out and clean away. I assume you will wait another 5-7 days to feed the snake again if it can't swallow the rat, to lessen the stress.

Nothing huge to worry about. You've done a great thing, rescuing him. :gj: Fatten that snake up and he'll be a happy camper.

i take my snake out of the enclosure and feed her in a heated tub lined with towels. i only do this cuz when she gets her aspen bedding all over the rat it takes her a long time to eat. when i feed her in the tub with no aspen her rat is gone in a couple minutes. try feeding her in a different enclosure without the bedding to interfere.

So...... Did it finish?

I had Elizabeth like the second time I fed her take a FT mouse wrong...she was taking it from the back and the side. I freaked...it took her like 4 1/2 hrs to finish the thing. OYE. Actually it is how I found this site because I was freaking out. LIke they said....eventually ....if they cannot do it...they will spit it out.

Well everything went okay you guy were all right took it like a champ after a few blood spots here and there... But all else he/she finished it, i was just so mad that these people did this to this snake. It seemed like it had not shed in a year, i could literally see its vertebrae, its in some bad shape. Right now its in qt so if you guy were wondering it will soon attach to my rack upon making sure everything is okay with him/her... Well on to fatting him/her up very excited my first rescue

Next time perhaps leave it alone till it settles in. Couple of my snakes are shy feeders, don't like being watched while they eat. :)
