    How many locks to git'R'done??
I think this is a pretty tough question to accurately answer as no one can really tell when the female's follicles have been fertilized (if that's even the right terminology...). And this will vary greatly I'm sure, but I'd like to get some sort of average.

So how many SOLID LOCKS do think you it takes before your female is gravid?

    It just takes the one:D

Though most people just keep pairing up until they see the Ovulation.

Dont think. Just introduce responsibly time and time again and let nature do its thing.

It's not about how many really....its the right time. It could be 1 and it could be 10 to get it done. Thats why people get ultrasounds because you're able to look at the size of the follicles developing within the females...once they're about 10-12cm you can usually get her with one lock...and normally this happens before you can even feel follicles inside the female. So if you don't have an ultrasound is all just a guessing game...put the males in until you're sure the female is gravid and will have eggs.

I can give the exact number of locks it takes for a female to become gravid and it is a very simple answer. 1. That is it just one.... Now is it lways the first lock???? No not always but it is truely only one lock thta impregnates her. Just like how many times does it take a human to become pregnant? Once but again it can take multiple attempts. If you disagree I would love to know why.

Well with the ultrasound at 10mm(very small but you can feel them) to 45mm(Ovulation) we pair 3-4 times. Thats only when they start the follicular development.
    Hope this helps:gj:

Hard to say, for all of the reasons stated above. Toby and Mona have been pairing up since September 1st, with at LEAST 7-8 confirmed locks - and nothing yet.

I guess it's all about timing, just as with human reproduction. For example, it took my sister 2 years to get pregnant with her daughter... but when they decided to have another, my nephew was conceived on the first try.

Well I finally get the answer to my question that I wanted. Looks like I DID miss an ovulation, as what Im feeling are tennis balls inside my female. Based on her last shed, looks like eggs in the next 3-4 days. Yowza! I could still be wrong though.

In a multiple sired clutch, obviously more than one. I voted 1-3

The very first lock may be the one that takes, but it can still take MONTHS before she develops. I know Deborah bred a male one time early in the season last year to a female, and then the rest of the season a second male that she really wanted to take. The first boy's one time early in the season was all it took when she got a surprise clutch of pinstripes from that single pairing.

On the OTHER hand, last year I bred a number of girls many different times to two different males (spider and lesser) and saw good locks several times with each one. Then they're LAST breeding was to a different male (Pastel) who I bred to them only once. ALL clutches that I got from that group of girls contained pastels and normals. So once was all it took. I think that timing is everything.

It depends if the females is cycling not how many locks. If its the right time one will do if she isnt it really doesnt matter.

How many times does it take for a human? all depends on the girls cycle;)

Re: How many locks to git'R'done??
To answer that, once, oh maybe twice or maybe 3 times!
This was cool, over a 6 week period three different males where introduced to a group of normal females and this clutch of

    2.0 normals
    1.3 Pins
    0.1 Pastels
    1.0 Spiders

    4/25/2008 hatch date.
I don't remember the date of cycling the males but I know it was after our first low pressure system came through in CA.

So how long does sperm retention last, well to say the least it brings up more questions!! So I bred early and often, feeding and resting males often and let nature sort it out.:-)

Hope everyone is having a Great 2010!!

Re: How many locks to git'R'done??
Over the last several years, we seem to be averaging 6 locks for every female that lays. Only a few locked up more than 6 times and didn't lay but many others only locked 1 or 2 times and didn't lay.

I can't tell you for certain if the first lock took and all the others were for fun or not. Clutch results don't seem to help me understand or predict, sometimes its the first male, other times its the last. Makes it all very exciting when those cut little heads start pipping. :D
