I return so much stuff back to walmart it's not even funny.

Thing with Wally World is, business WANT walmart to buy their products to sell them in the stores.

So Walmart tells them to get them stripped down to a price Walmart wants to pay. In turn, you get cheaply made stuff from a place with cheap prices. It ends up hurting a particular brands reputation, but hey, their keeping their employees working, pumping out crap to walmart.

I'm finding more and more places that sell what I need for the same price if not cheaper than Wally World, so that's where I'm going.

    Pretty much.

I'm a Union Worker so we get to hear all about the evil entity that is Walmart.

Bottom line, you shouldn't shop at Walmart. Granted I still get stuff from there that I need sometimes. But like I said, I'm finding other places to buy from.

I'm also a pro Made In USA guy, so that makes the available stuff I buy from Walmart cut by like 95%.

I avoid wal-mart like the plague. I just can't shop there knowing their business practices. Only time I go there is if I'm traveling or camping and there's something I need and all I can find is wal-mart.

    For me its Target FTW!!

Yeah, 95% of the crap at Wally World is made in China, Phillipines, Mexico, etc etc...

Ever since the old man died walmart has gone to the dogs.

I started shopping at target for my cleaning supplies etc.. A long time ago because guess what.... ITS CHEAPER THERE!

SO walmart doesn't have the lowest prices. The electronics suck. There is no selection of clothes, especially for a child, the household supplies are more expensive than other department stores etc..

Besides, if you do happen to find something big like a TV, computer, microwave, PS3, for less at walmart... Best Buy will do a price match! Plus they offer a warantee that walmart can't touch.

Even the grocery section at walmart is more expensive than grocery stores.

Walmart gets a thumbs down from me.

belive it or not wal mart has changed many of their buisness practices from what they used to be and IS treating their workers in china a LOT BETTER. Their workers at their stores have been getting better wages then what they used to be. The problem is: they used to be such a monster with the union thing, that unions still keep looking BACKWARDS into what wal mart used to be and not what wal mart is now/going to be. And for one, I have purchased some things from wal mart that were broken, but not more than any other store.

If you ever get to see it, there's a big expose on Walmart where they follow around some of the higher up people, it's sad.

Basically they have these scouts that go out and find failing or slower moving towns and put in a Supercenter. They offer prices that are just MIND BLOWINGLY low until all the other small businesses go out of business since they just cant compete.

After that, they raise their prices back up if not higher than what the smaller places sold them at before they went out of business.

I have seen that video, it is about what 9 or 10 years old? there is also a new one showing the changes, have you seen that one? The thing about them going into towns and lowering prices and putting them out of buisness and raising prices back, was NEVER actually proven. A third party, unaffiliated with wal mart, did a survey of such said wal mart and over about 10-15 years the prices only went up about 2.5-5%

    No I haven't!

    Got a link?

    Perfect example.

My local store started carrying an automotive product called Sea-Foam at 5 something a can.

This was like HALF what the local parts stores sold them at! Guess what? I got into the habit of buying it there from then on.

Next thing I know, it's over 9 bucks a can!

They get ya buying crap there with their prices, then raise em up slowly and quietly.

I see it with stuff year after year.

Re: I am tired of buying shotty merchandise from walmart
What I found amazing occured on Dec 27th of this year. My bedroom TV went up, so I went to Best Buys to look for a replacement. I noticed a guy walking around each person looking at TVs. When he got to me, he told me that Walmart had a better deal on the TV I was looking at. I asked him about an extended warranty and he told me that his wife had just returned a TV after 9 months and Walmart just gave her another. I asked him a few questions and you could easily see he was a paid shopper for Walmart. He started taking pictures of the displays, then he made a phone call and went down the line and reported to someone on the phone the model numbers and their prices. So I know he's a paid shopper, if not a Walmart employee.

Only problem with his statements, Walmart doesn't sell the Samsung I bought. Walmart sells the bottom lines of most manufacturers. I was buying a 1080p 32 inch HDTV, Walmart doesn't sell them, only the 720p. To be honest I lost all respect for Walmart after experiencing this.

Re: I am tired of buying shotty merchandise from walmart
I don't like buying from Walmart. I would much rather buy from a small business but my husband and mother in law are ALL about saving money. My mother in law makes huge trips every few days to Walmart to get all her stuff. My husband and I go to a grocery store like Ukrops and Kroger and I start looking for things on our list and my husband says "You know, this stuff is cheaper at Walmart."

See that's not the point! I would much rather support local business than support a huge chain store. When I went to school in Wise, Va, a supercenter opened during the first month I was there. People flocked to this store because it was easy to get to and had everything they needed. Over the course of a year I slowly saw the small businesses lose business and eventually you didn't see many cars anywhere but Walmart. It made me feel horrible. I hate how Walmart comes into a town/city and just wipes out all the small stores. That's what happened with the pet stores around here. My FAVORITE pet store that I drove 30 minutes to go to had to shut down because they could not compete with Walmart and Petsmart. :(

Not to mention Walmart's employees are terrible. I mean, some of them are nice but most of the time when I go shopping they don't have near enough people working the lanes and the people who stock are listening to offensive music and just throwing stuff around.

Hmmm, this brings 2 things to mind.

Jeff Dunham talking about how rude wal-mart greeters are, and an episode of southpark where Wal-mart takes over the world. Sad thing is, its 100% true. people there are rude, and get upset when you ask them for help, especially in electronics, but you need the help because EVERYTHING is locked up, thats why theyre there. And that does happen with the smaller businesses. Luckily, I work at a mom-n-pop pet shop kinda thing, and we have all of the high end dog and cat supplies that Wal-mart wouldnt dare touch, because it costs too much money. So little things like that will not be going anywhere.

Well the deal in this household is that if I want to be able to afford to eat, sometimes walmart is the place I will have to go. Now I will say, they are not the cheapest on everything and I try to stay aware of places to get things besides walmart.
I saw a bumper sticker once that said. "Walmart, Home of really cheap crap"
    Pretty true at times.
For Over the counter meds, walmart is best. For food, the new walmart brands are often just as good as the big name brand and cheaper. I do not buy anything of great importance, like vacuums and such, there.

About the only thing Wal-Mart is good for is Accu-rites and the occassional tub for storage, and that is only if Target is out...

Too bad RBI doesn't sell Accu-rites. Then I would have no reason to go anywhere else...

you really kind of know what you are getting when you get something cheap at walmart. We shop there for some food items and oil for the car...some toys..movies, games...etc. We don't buy electronics, no produce (it goes bad quickly), no clothes, no major purchase items. But we really do save money on the other stuff and it is the same exact items (namebrand) as some place else.

Hey if I can save a dollar....I will certainly try!!

Its sad to hear all this, i dont work at walmart and for that dont no any1 that does but i havnt ever had anything like what everyone is saying happen. We buy alot of stuff from there. Cleaning stuff, toys, food, and some clothing. But one thing i can say is that almost everything at walmart is cheaper than target. My wife and myself have priced many things at both stores.

I hate Walmart, and prefer Target's quality but I hate they're morality.

From what I've been told, Target is a French owned company and recently denied all charities from bell ringing in front of their doors. So, many of the Santas collecting loose change that we used to see all the time have been turned down.

Walmart has crappy quailty, Target is owned by jerks, and Jewel treats their employees like dirt. I have never had an issue with ALDI products, so that's where we shop for groceries at least. Same with Trader Joe's (and hey, the original owners of ALDI and Trader Joe's are brothers!) but there just isn't a good department store out there.

There's only so much you can buy online too. I suppose you just have to shop for specific brands as much as you can.

I go to wal-mart alot. I buy some small things there. My coffee pot is from there, and it's never glitched out. I do buy some clothes from there, since I'm in the middle of dumping weight it's a cheap way to not look like I'm swimming in my clothes.

I love target, they have much better quality and some of their home decor is pretty. But, they're more expensive than wal-mart is here. Not by much though. They have signs on their door saying no charities or bell ringers, but there is always one outside smoking a cigarette which is super annoying. The bell ringers and charities outside Safeway are really annoying, the wal-mart ones don't really approach me.

Re: I am tired of buying shotty merchandise from walmart
I have not regretted any purchase from wal-mart, in fact I've often been way more than impressed with things i bought assuming they would be ridiculously cheaply made (because they were ridiculously cheaply priced).

Notably: $30 for a salmon rod/reel/17lb monofilament line. I just needed a beater rod while I was visiting the parents. I regularly fish with pretty expensive gear back home because pretty often cheap reels will break down with very little use.

The rod was nothing special, you can make a beefy rod capable of landing big fish for very little money. However, the fact of the matter was that with the very little fishing I have done up there the past two seasons, I have been able to put over 100lbs (estimate) of filleted meat in my parents' freezer with a freaking cheap wal-mart rod and reel. These are late season fresh pacific run silver salmon and even a nice ~30lb king was landed on that rod and reel, they do put a bit of strain on your equipment over time. I'm surprised that it's held up this long, so for $30 of fishing equipment investment I'm very happy.

I don't ever recall getting anything that had to be returned to wal-mart aside from my own personal preference or manufacturing issues and I've bought A LOT of electronics from them.

Obviously I can't hold them accountable for my own likes and dislikes nor can I hold them accountable for a piece of equipment that doesn't work properly. I just return and get a new one and life goes on. Now if they manufactured the stuff that doesn't work that would be a different story.

I work at wal-mart :-( I don't like the direction they are going in. It seems like when I first started there, there were plenty of employees and the work was evenly distributed. A few months later a few people were transferred out, someone quite, a couple of them went on medical leave and then it was just me doing most of the work. They knew they were shorthanded, they still are, but are now on a "hiring freeze". I find this funny, considering the sales are up. Basically they are cutting hours and letting people go but not hiring more people. If you can do math, it doesn't make any sense. I hate working there, but where I live there is not really anywhere else to go :-(

I buy mainly DVDs there and CDs that don't have harsh language because they only sell edited ones.

Other than that I get my automotive maintenance stuff there because it's cheaper there than it was buying from Kragen with a company discount when I worked at a tire shop.

If the Walmart by my house wasn't 24 hours, I probably would go there a lot less.

O.o I've never had any issues with wal-mart. The only times I've returned anything were cds/games, and clothes that didn't fit me (people will sometimes buy me clothes that end up not fitting me). The people have always been friendly..And yes, the extended warranty that you can buy for electronics that adds another year or so after the manufactures warranty expires does exist. I have it on both my tv and PS3...Meaning if it breaks and it can't be fixed, they'll replace it.

I quite honestly have a thing against target. Any time I've been there all the merchandise is torn up and partially opened. Quite honestly, some of you come across as paranoid. If anything, the big super wal-mart has helped the small nearby town. More jobs, and better food (especially considering the only grocery store always had bad food and people would flock to the next town's wal-mart anyway).

    Meijer is just weird...

About the only thing I really like about that store is the pet section is better than walmart or target lol. Oh and the section w shampoo & bathroom stuff has some products and brands you dont see anywhere else.

I don't mind Wal-Mart that much... someone else a few post ago nailed it. If they weren't the only thing open 24 hours, I most likely wouldn't shop there as much.

I do wish we had other options in Stillwater... being a smaller college town, Wal-Mart is really the only big store. We have some other clothing stores (Old Navy and such) and a couple other grocery stores, but I really wish we had a Target, or something else around. The next biggest town in *any* direction is at least an hour away, so if you can't find it at Wal-mart, your going to have to drive aways.

I do need to start shopping at the other grocery stores, but the problem is, when I shop, it's not just for food, or just for one type of thing, so if I go somewhere else, I end up running to several different stores... and with my truck, that is just not an easy thing to do.

And I'm not sure what kind of damage Wal-Mart has done to local stores, but I know Pet-Co (hate that store) shut down a really nice lil mom and pop pet store. It was the only other place for pet stuff. That really sucked. =/ As far as Wal-Marts go, we now have two super centers, and not a whole lot else...

I worked for walmart for over 10 years. I did not work in a store but in logistics. It was a great job. I made 35k a year, worked 3 - 12 hour days and got almost 8 weeks of vacation a year (this of course was at the end of my career there). Also had decent health insurance, much better deal than i get paying for my own.

Walmart is number 1, so everyone targets them. Walmart employs over 1.5 million people, so of course your going to have screw ups and douchebags that work there. And since they are number 1, they of course will get the most publicity.

No offense to trevor, but unions are a big problem with the way the US job scheme is. They are part of the reason why the auto companies are in trouble. Wait, which auto company isn't in trouble? Toyota....are they union?

Unions served their purposes quite well early on, but they now create a lot of problems as well.

People want to blame all of their problems on walmart, but walmart creates a ton of opportunity.

They provide low skilled jobs for people (and no one is forced to work there), and they also offer opportunity to advance within the company. Where i worked there it was pretty much impossible to get fired, so you could truly be a human degenerate and have a job with potential opportunity.

Also when they build a store somewhere, watch and see all of the other non-local businesses that come right behind, and no one complains about these.

But anyhow, most of these "local" businesses don't want to change with the times. And then they can't keep up with the pace of the current trends, they go out of business and blame walmart. When in fact they need to take a look at their business practices and make some changes instead of crying about walmart.

Robert Greenwald did a documentary on Walmart and it featured a hardware store and claimed that walmart put em' out business, turns out the hardware store was already well on its way out before the walmart was built.

Walmart is just an easy target. You can't blame walmart for getting the best price. it's what everyone does! how many times have you seen a snake for sale and you haggle and lowball on the price? it's how it works!

Do they offer junk? of course they do, but it's because people keep buying it! Target is really no better either. They are just a bit more upscale junk.
