    Havre De Grace 1/9
Just realized I had the 9th off of work. I've never been to this show and its a good 3 hours away from here. I might go, I might not. Have any of you ever been to this show and is it worth a 3 hour trip for me? The next show that is closer to me is in Manassas, Va in February so I'm kind of itching to go to a show. Haven't been to one since the summer.

    I've been.

There's still some good deals, but the "fly-by-night" breeders are dragging the quality of the animals down and it's been said that some sick animals have been sold there.

I have basically limited myself to buying supplies (substrate, feeders and equipment).

I don't plan on purchasing any animals from the show. My next snake is coming from a well known breeder on this forum. They just don't know it yet. :D I just like going and looking at all the animals and I am looking for some new racks soon. I have to replace my adult female rack and get a hatchling rack.

Then you should be good to go. I did find some awesome deals in there. :gj:

Do you know of anyone that sells racks there? I've gone to the Richmond show and once or twice I've seen racks, but mostly I see boa/large python cages, not racks.

I don't recall now, it's been so long since I went. :( But they should have a list of vendors attending and one can always contact those vendors and make plans ahead of time?

I take a little offense in that statement any show can have flippers & scammers I set up at the november show & my animals are top notch & will put my animals up against anybodys I rather buy from a small breeder instead of a mass producing giant breeder. The bigger breeders are the ones that are killing me offering such deals that its not worth it to sell my animals that cheap! I spend time everyday with my animals & are well taken care of fed & growing good unlike some ive seen the same size show after show because it costs money to feed.

It's the only game in town, so to speak. The hall in which the show is held is no bigger than a middle school's basketball court. Not a big show at all. I can't speak for anyone but myself. I would probably make a 3 hour trip just to say that I've been, but I can tell you it would probably be the last time I'd travel that far for this show.

    Just one man's opinion,

Hmm, I might make the trip. We shall see. I have nothing against small breeders at all. Actually all of my snakes have come from "small breeders" so far and I love my snakes. All have been healthy and great to keep. :)

We'll see you there. The guys at Chesapeake ball pythons sell pretty nice new racks, and we sometimes bring along our extra used racks, which are a good deal if you don't mind that they are previously used.

Its a small show, but there are a good few noteworthy breeders who go. Adam Wysocki, Rick Krumrine, Of course Ian G (Outback), and a few high quality local breeders who arent very well known (I think its Steve and Cindy, their company is called Morph Makers and they have some very nice animals)

Please re-read my statement. I didn't say "small breeders," I said, "fly-by-night" breeders...those are the "bad" flippers and scammers. I hestitate to buy from shows lately (used to) because those fly-by-nighters may have brought in something that got passed around.

I have brought from breeders in Havre de Grace before..and if I ever saw something I couldn't pass up, I probably would again.

    Peace

You don't see too much of that at Havre de Grace. Larry asks for money up front (month prior) and I think that prevents the flippers from showing up. Although, if Larry has tables available, he will let one timers into the show. Some of the long time dealers will flip a snake or two. That's why a buyer must do their homework before buying. The only good thing is you can expect to see the long term dealers there every month. Most, if not all, will stand by their sale and make things right.

I'll be there with an Embry Riddle Aeronautical University jacket or cap. I'll probably be there around 9-9:30. I will most likely be hanging out with Rick and Mariam Krumrine.

    Hope to see ya there!

Morph Makers does have great animals, but I can't recall seeing them at Havre de Grace.

We go nearly every month, simply for supplies. It's a no brainer-- $5 for 100 superworms versus $3.95 for 30 worms at our local Petsmart or $4 for 50 at the local herp store. You cannot beat MaxPet for supplies.

There's always some interesting stuff, though, like any show, you should be choosy about who you buy live animals from. We have numerous animals from Outback and a few from miscellaneous small local breeders, too.

Well, everyone lost their money. If you listen to Larry, he had to pay for the hall regardless of how many vendors showed. His webpage stated that the show was going with or without other vendors. He said he's be there and knowing Larry, he was there.

I know it doesn't seem fair, but if he had to pay for the hall, then I guess that's all he could do. If he has expenses to meet than that's the way it's got to be. Fair? No. But reality isn't fair sometimes.

I personally would set up a table. There are going to be people with Christmas money and then other people that were wanting to get a Christmas present and couldn't last month. These people are going to be there to buy!

    Good Luck!
    Jim Smith

ps I'll be there looking for a deal.

That really does suck! I can't imagine that is good for business. I was going to go to that show, but no way I would have made it up there! I am coming all the way from Dundalk.

Wish I had some Christmas money to play with. All I have is $100 and we are using that to fix up the ferret room when we move in February. I might be there. I'm trying to see if my sister will come with me. If she can't go, then I'm probably going to sit this one out.

What are you planning to do with your ferret room? Our ferrets, birds and small mammals are all in the PC room, where we spend lots of time. I am getting ready to tile the floor in here to make clean up easier (carpet with ferrets and parrots really sucks!)

Well they are getting a brand new Ferret Nation 142 cage with ramps and all new bedding for inside the cage. New feeding dishes and water dishes. We also plan on getting some "ferret furniture" which is basically cat furniture only in miniature. We are going to be putting some tubes all around the room and several dig boxes with different kinds of digging material (rice, newspaper, etc) and getting them all new toys. They've been needing it for a long time. Due to financial issues earlier this year, we moved in with my mother in law and the ferrets, rats, mice, bird, and snakes had to go into a very tiny room. The ferrets don't get a lot of out of cage time either, so this is going to be awesome for them. I will be taking pictures from start to finish once we move over there, so expect lots of pictures!!

But my husband has given me the go ahead to get two more snakes in 2010 as well as 1-2 hatchling racks and replace my CB70 rack. I can't wait!

i love the HDG show.. have i seen some sub-par animals there? Yes.. but i have at any other show i've been to. And you know what i do? I dont buy the animal, OR i talk to the breeder/owner and get the story on it. If i dont feel comfortable buying (anywhere) then i dont.

For the most part (and i mean over 90%) of the animals i see and the people i talk to are GREAT. I've met some really awesome people there and have really great reptile friends (which my BF says i need lol).

If i can work my stuff out i want to pick up a few fat tail geckos from a breeder i've been talking to for months (since august when i started going to the show).

And the storm thing was no good, and not getting your table fee back but there isn't really much you can do about it. But storms like that classify as an "act of god" :/

I have just one parrot, but it is kinda rare. It's a Lesser Jardine female. Found in Western Africa. From the region of Togo (a country), her name is Togo (pronounced ToeGo).

She's 17 years old now. She's started to pluck her feathers because she wants to mate. I can't find anyone nearby with a male Jardine, so we try our best to keep her busy with other things. She was my bird, but about 6 years ago, the wife took an interest in her and now I can't get near Togo.

They have a large beak for their size and she's cut me before, so I won't try anymore. When she's out, and I come into the room, she actually chases me, it's funny to see.

She's a beautiful bird, but I wish I could find her a male so she could get this hormonal thing out of the way.

I have seen a few Jardines on some of the birdy forums that I visit. If you belong to any bird forums, or join a few (if you haven't already), perhaps you will find a hook up. :)

I know this site can hook you up with breeders and you may find what you are looking for: http://www.birdbreeders.com

Back on topic...still undecided on attendance...but need substrate and PAM......:D

Just a quick reminder for tomorrow's show. Seems like we'll be able to have this one. No 20 inches of snow to deal with.

Who's going to be there and what time do you plan on showing up?

I'm shooting for a 9am arrival and probably stay for a few hours. Probably leave around noon.

I'll be wearing a blue Embry Riddle Aeronautical University jacket. I'll probably be hanging around Rick Krumrine and JP (Afishinadoes) tables once I make it around once or twice.

    Hope to see you there!

ill probably be arriving around 10 or 10:30 since it takes me a while to get there from DC but its worth the drive. I'll have a crazy purse with me thats brown with blue spot things on it, and a grey hoodie that says "cinderbird.com" on the back with my chickadee.

I need to grab food for everyone and maybe an animal or two if i see anything that catches my eyes.
