Can't pass up this DEAL!
:rolleye2: Holy CRAP! My boyfriend just did some shopping around on the internet and just got a deal I don't think anyone can pass up! atleast people who are just starting out on their collection.
Here's What We're Getting.
1 male Normal-3-4yrs old
1 male Blonde Pastel 3-4 yrs.
1 female Normal 1 1/2 yrs ready to breed next yr.
1 male 100% het Piebald 1 1/2 yrs.
with fresh bedding water dishes, and plastic containers...
All that for a Garmin Nuvi 265w GPS system.
oh btw. I did some reading about breeding the pied, and read two totally different things! help!!!!
If I breed the 100% het pied to a normal female, whats the outcome?
I'm leaning more to some of the babys will be 50% het pied, if I breed it back to the 100% het for pied will I get a pied or just another 100%? or how does it work?
-
Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Yes all babies will then be 50% hets. Raise up one of the babies and breed it back to the 100% het and you could possibly get a pied.

100% pied to a normal =
every egg has a 50% chance of carrying the pied gene, aka all the babies are possible (50%) het pied.
Keep all the female babies and raise them up then breed them back to dad. You have a 1/4th chance of getting a pied, assuming that the female you breed him too actually is het for pied.
The possible offpring from Het pied to Het Pied=
Pieds
66% het pieds (each parent has a chance of contributing a copy of the pied gene)
normals (babies where the parents did not contribute a pied gene)
the hets and normals look the same, so you have to breed them to figure out which ones are which.

I have no clue! He just sits on the computer and browses. He does everything from kingsnakes-google-ing-reading the paper! lol.
Thank you for clearing that up for us! :gj:

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
So....
If I breed a 100%het pied to a normal female
all the babies are going to look normal and be 50% for pied and then breed them back to daddy and then i should get a pied out of one of those possibably?
Sorry my boyfriend wants me to clearify that thats what your talkin about even thou i got the general idea, uhg.

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Make sure you get pictures and a guarantee of the genetics. My friend who likes reptiles and works at a pet store (she keeps lizards) called me and said "OMG, we have a pastel at the store for sale! I didn't think we'd get a pastel in but a guy who breeds ball pythons came in and said it was a pastel!" So of course the next time I went in she showed me the "pastel". It was definitely a normal. No mistake about it. And the female, I would definitely sex it before you bring it home. Not everyone out there selling snakes wants to rip you off but there are quite a few of them. For all you know the female could be a male, the pastel is just a really light normal and the het pied is just a normal. Then you have four males....I would just be sure of what you are getting before you make a deal with this person.
Just saw your post. As long as you've seen them and know what you are getting, that is a great deal.

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Thank you for you good/funny story, Ill be sure to watch out for that!
That would be kinda chitty if someone did that but hey people can be grimmy.

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Just looked at the papers...
I guess the lady that bought this snake bought it from RCReptiles,it'ssigned by Ronald Crawford, breeder and owner of RCReptiles.com
is that a good sign? I don't really no the rep on rcr.

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
The feedback forum on here might have something about RCR, As far as the deal, Hell it's so good you could call it a steal :)

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
With your 100% het pied male to a normal female, all of the babies will LOOK normal, but half will carry the pied gene. Unfortunately, you have no way of knowing which ones carry it unless you breed each one out.
If you are fortunate enough to get a few girl babies from that pair, you could breed each one back to the dad in three years and if you are even more fortunate, you could possibly get a pied. But the odds are pretty long I'm afraid. First you'd have to get a girl who was het pied, and remember you can't tell, then statistically one out of four of her babies will be a pied.
But, you could end up with all normal looking babies again, or you could end up with all pieds, it's more or less a gamble.
My advice to you, if you want to increase your odds of a pied, is once you have your new snakes settled, look for a 100% het pied female for the male. You can pick up a baby het female for around $300 right now, of course a bigger female will cost more, but they are out there. If you breed a 100% het pied female to your male, then you already have the one in four odds of a pied, without the guesswork.
That is the route I'm going. I actually have 2 het pied females for my male. I figure if the odds for one girl is one in four, then two girls should double my odds of that pied I'm longing for.

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Not sure if you have any other snakes if you do be sure to read the quarrantine "how to". It is an excellent source of information.
Congrats on your deal....I hope it all works out!! :gj:

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Congrats! A little male heavy - I'd recommend also getting some more females at some point to balance that out. Congrats!

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Heh I think thats the GPS I got for christmas. Congrats on the deal- I like it when I find people who will trade stuff I want, for stuff I have that I don't want ;)

Re: Can't pass up this DEAL!
Well as of right now, we already own 3 females 2 that will def be ready for breeding next yr. All the snakes besides one of our RTB which we found out last night most likely is a girl and the other snake we got from some one in a TRADE most likely is a boy even though he said it was probed? They were all over eachother last night and trying to wrap! Still confussed on who boy whos girl? i dont know but anyways 4 snakes that we have out of 5 were trades.
We figure that we'd rather trade to start, then mix it up with trading and buying.
oh bad news... She no longer has the blonde.:( I kinda wanted that one so I can try breeding out on my own and leave the pied to my boyfriend.
But oh well. maybe I can see if she has a ghost or spider or something to put in there for the blonde.
Fingerscrossed
