Knowing what I do about Ukrainian history, especially circa WW2...

That was one of the most beautiful, touching things I have ever seen in my life.

Some of the best things come from the Ukraine, Like their eurovision entry that got 2nd in 2007.

    YouTube - Eurovision 2007 - Ukraine

Got to love a half drag man in tin foil and some camp back up dancers.

She was telling a story and the story was sad, that's why the ladies were crying. I'm hardly qualified to assess artwork but I think the story was a man and woman meet. They become close. They have a child. He gets sent away for something. Later he returns. <----Very simplified.

I was under the impression that it was a story of the war (one of the world wars) and its effect on the country and the people. That's why the man is called away.

It's a very powerful story, especially to people who may have experienced it, or their parents/grandparents.
