Peeps with Heartburn
So for the past 4-5 days, I have been having this very odd feeling in my chest...kinda by my adams apple, but goes down to the middle of my chest. Feels like I have something like stuck in my throat, but not really.
I have been getting flare ups of some pretty bad Heartburn along with this feeling.
It almost feels like when you eat something to fast, and your JUST about to get the hiccups...thats how my throat feels, but the heartburn is a mystery to me.
Anybody have suggestions? Tips?
I have been avoiding the Doctor like a plague, thinking it will just go away...but like I said 5 days of this.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
if there is a feeling of weight on the area described...id head to the dr...they will probably want to do a stress test. dont take your health for granted, it is fleeting. i guess id would rather go to the doc and be able to do something about it, then wait it out only to find there was irreversible damage done. not what you probably want to hear, but thats what id do.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
I love Gaviscon for the days when my Prilosec doesn't get the job done.
I know going to the doc sucks, but this might not go away on its own, and you can cause some serious damage by letting it go.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
I've had heartburn since I was 12. It sucks, and I actually have it right now from some bread I had at a restaurant.
Have you tried tums just to see if they'll help? Since I've had it for so long, I have to tak 4 for them to do anything. You probly won't have to take as much.

Re: Big Gunns needs opinions from his fans
I just read this entire thread...and it seams that if someone doesnt like someone.....they have no sense of humor?
If you notice the people that seem to like Big Gulp are the people that flood this place with nonsense...and hundreds of polls daily.
So to say that because I dont like BG...I have no sense of humor is plain IGNORANT.
Its down right annoying...thats what it comes down to.
Its like that thing thats funny at first....and the person knows its funny....so they play that same card ALL DAY LONG......every post....every thread....every breath out of his mouth (even him saying he will stop).
That is the ultimate DEFINITION of annoying.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
Things like Tums and other antacids actually make the problem worse in the long run. Your body wants acid in the stomach and will keep producing it until a certain level is reached. Using antacids a lot will raise the level at which your body feels comfortable and stops producing stomach acid. So you end up having a whole lot of extra stomach acid that you don't need and that makes the occurrences of heart burn increase.
Try a glass of milk or yogurt. There are other foods that can help naturally.
Elise, I would strongly recommend you try something different. Please don't just take my word for it either. I would encourage you and anyone else who uses antacids regularly to do a little research. You'll find that there are much worse things that can happen.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
I had a very similar feeling as you Pat. I have been diagnosed with esophageal reflux. I am currently taking an OTC medication for it. I am taking Prevacid at 15 mg. I would say you really need to go to the doctor and find out what is truly wrong. I didn't want to go to the doctor at first either, but the discomfort became more then I could bear after a while. Good Luck to you at finding out what the issue is.

depends on what kind of antacids you're taking. Some of them are crap. If one doesn't work, try another. Tagamet, Maalox, Prevacid is what I have in my medicine cabinet. Usually one of those will work. OR, you could just go to the Dr and quit being a scaredy cat
P.S. when I first saw this thread the first thing I thought of was Jalapeno flavored tasty marshmallow treats in the shape of baby chickens....

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
Dont just go to a regular doctor. Go to an ear nose and throat doctor.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
I have bad acid reflux from about 15 years of Mtn Dew drinking. About a case a day. The scar tissue built up in my throat and now its hard to swallow food. I have to take tiny bites and chew it really well. A couple months ago i got a piece of steak caught and 5 hours later i went to the emergancy room. They knocked me out and removed it. And it only cost me 4 thousand dollars.
You might not have the same problem as me but its worth looking into if you drink lots of pop.
A guy i work with had the same symptoms as you and went in to the doctors office. He had these crazy bumps all over the back of his throat. Let me google the name. Its a long one... Couldn't find it.
Anyways go to a good ear nose and throat doctor. Might be something simple.

I go through anywhere from 4-6 bottles of Maalox per month... whatever works...

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
please go to a doctor!
It's probably nothing and they'll fix you up right quick.
There's a lot of things it could be, and the only way to make sure it's nothing serious is to go get it checked out.
You'd bring your snake to the vet if he complained, wouldn't you?

Pat:
Sounds like GERD. That stomach acid can back up your esophagus and cause some scarring and a stricture.
I suffered from the exact same thing you described and would have problems swallowing bread, pills, etc.
The Doctor put me on Protonix (which is a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec or Prevacid which are OTC). After four days on the pump inhibitors my condition gradually reversed itself.
It may be worth a trip to the Doc to see if you have GERD or a hiatal hernia (common) or both. You might find that you need to be on a proton pump inhibitor for the rest of your life. If you ignore these symptoms and your esophagus is being scarred, it can lead to a whole host of other conditions.
In the meantime, check out some of the GERD sites and forums out there and see if the symptoms match up.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
I would bet $100- you have GERD! I have it...caused from high anxiety! (mine is anyways). It will get worse if you don't take care of it. Go and see a Gastro Doc. They will probably want to do a couple of test to rule things out like Hyplori which is like a bacteria. If it isn't that they will put you on a pronton pump inhibitor. Take care of it now again it will get worse if left untreated and can eventually affect your breathing and cause ashthma.
And by the way...it can at times feel like you are having a heart attack or something. Acid does some crazy stuff to ya! I have been to pulmonary specialists...heart specialists...you name it. It was the GERD.

Re: Peeps with Heartburn
Pattimuss, find a peaceful place. The beach, a park, somewhere you can sit comfortably for a while.
Look within and see if there is not something outside your physical self causing you a lot of stress. Is there something you need to do? Something you did you shouldn't have? Something you don't know how to do, or maybe even what to do, but you know something needs doing?
Go deep and look hard.
Good luck.
May the WeedFairy find you and bless you with the strength and wisdom to see the truth and do something about it.
Respect the Duck.
