Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
Propane heater.. :D hooked to a 20lb bottle will heat my whole snake room to 80+ degrees.. Disclaimer make sure to follow all directions on the heater.
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
I've wondered about this before also. I live in Minnesota. Maybe a generator and space heater. Or if you keep snakes in tubs load them in car and bring to friends house.
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
Just get you one of these set up's on low it will keep the room warm and with that bottle should last for a couple of days if need be..

Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
I would NOT recommend a propane heater for inside your home. Carbon Monocide poisoning would be of big concern. You would have to keep a window open about 2 inches to vent the room properly.
A generator would be the best solution, but if you don't already have one, you probably won't be going out and spending big bucks to buy one. If you have a grill with the side attachment, you can boil some water and fill up a few hot water bottles. Put them in the enclosures and the snakes will gravitate towards these to stay warm. You could head out to the store and buy some hand/foot warmers. Put them on the bottom of the enclosure, then cover them with a towel. The towel will hopefull prevent a belly burn and they will last 6 hours or more.
BTW, how did you send this message without electricity.
Good Luck!

My heater actually almost set my house on fire yesterday morning. The cord melted into our carpet. The carpet was only 6 months old to so that kind of sucked. BUt Its better then the house burning. If I lived somewhere that was extremly cold I would invest in a generator. We have been thi nk ing about getting one for here because we have power outages sometimes but its usually not for very long

Our power tends to go out at bad times, like in the dead of winter, sometimes. I ordered a bunch of those heat packs from reptile basics a while ago, in case such a situation arises. They are good for like 40 hours or something?

Thats actually a good idea. I live in Minnesota too and its very cold. I don't know what I would do if I lost power, other than maybe putting the animals closer to the fireplace? I don't really even know if that would work....
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
if you have a gas oven you can turn your oven on and move the snake into the kitchen area, our oven heats up pretty much the whole house to about 80-90
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
same issue with the carbon monoxide, I believe.
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
We had this issue many years ago when my sister had an iguana.
Snow storm knocked our power out for about 5 days...
We had a gas hot water heater and filled up water bottles with hot water and put them in with him and he would crawl right over to them.
You do have to constantly change the water to warm water...but...he lived :)

ovens dont put off too much or lots of families would die during the holidays, and a alot of resturant workers
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
Natural Gas and propane are two of the safest gases to use in the home. A properly working propane or natural gas heater doesn't produce Carbon Monoxide is large enough quantity to even be rated. However with that said improper combustion of anything from paper to vet fuel will produces CO (Carbon Monoxide)..So the choice is yours I've used those heaters for the past three years with no problem, Just crack a window to allow air exchange and your good to go.
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
A small back up generator just for your heat lights is a good thing to have and they are fairly cheap now a days. A propane heater would work but you would have to open a window which would make the humidity drop, Also I another idea is a foam dissposable cooler and smaller tupperwares for the snakes and hand warmers. Poke holes in the lid for some air. tape the heater to the lid to keep the heater a ways away from the snakes. One other option is buy a snake shipping package from "weshipreptiles" a 12 hour to a overnight shipping package with their heaters should keep the snakes cozy till the power return. I hope one of these ideas has helped
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
I like he propane heater ideal sinece it can be resued with just fillnig a tank, I may look for one and have it set up inthe hall blowing into the snake room ( with the door open and jsut crack my bedroom window to allow it ot vent out any gases. Or I can fire up my truck and get a large dc/ac convter and just power my space heater off that.
either way if the pipes freeze i am so in deep waste cause we have the older grey pipe and it not consider safe anymore to use(stooped being used 2 years after we bought the place.
Re: Great.. my power went out and it's COLD !!
If nothing else works maybe try some hand warmers. They don't get really warm or last very long but they'd be better then nothing. Or maybe put them in a styrophome cooler just for the time being with some hand warmers. Depending on how many snakes you have you may only need a couple and you could put the snakes in snake bags or pillow cases and do a few per cooler. Just a thought but whatever you do good luck and I hope everything turns out okay!!
