Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
Just picked up a pair of Dumbo rats from petsmart. I had to drive all over town to get them though. Most of the stores only had males. But one store had only females. It took me about half the day but i got my pair. I hate buying animals from pet stores but it was the only way i could find what i was looking for. I have been looking for a while to get some dumbos but no breeders in my area that i could find. Im at work and will get some pics up when i get home.
The male is a full grown adult and the female is only half way there.
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
That can be hard-to-find at stores like PetSmart, as they mostly have males.
Petco seems to have both.
I wonder if anyone online ships live rats?
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
I dont know of anyone that would ship live rats. I guess it could be done pretty easily. It might be easier to ship them as fuzzies because they dont use as much air as an adult and they could make it the full 24 hours or so in the container.
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
live animals (rats) can be shipped with delta dash and other airlines, but the rates usually starts around $75 so it's cost prohibitive.

Exactly as all live mammal shippments require vet checked paperwork and so on. May be worth if for birds and or dogs but not rats. I got about 15 baby dumbos at 2 weeks old. Im getting them non stop with my breeding.
But most petcos will not sell males while petsmarts sells the males. Its like they have a understanding on rats to sell one sex or the other. Or at least thats how they are here.
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
I guess it is different with each region, here I have only 2 Petsmarts and they both only carry males. I also have 2 Petco's and they carry both genders so I buy them there instead, the local pet shop usually has sick feeder rodents that constantly wheezing and sneezing, and don't wanna even get close to that!

Sneezing in rats isnt always a cause of sickness. Rats can be picky on bedding which causes allergies. Keep in mind what a rat has a snake cant get. What effects cold blooded reptiles will not effect warm blooded and vice versa.
But its just best to breed your own if you want to get into the genetics of rats.

Congrats and good luck...Love my Dumbo rats...Have 18 babies from 2 litters...Get ready for cute little rats you'll be feeding off...Just don't hold back too many or you'll be overrun with cute lil' Dumbos...:)
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
Petsmarts only sell Males, or at least they are only supossed to. They also have the price super high because they only want people to buy them as pets and not as feeders.
Congrats on getting the Dumbos though! Its kind of hard for me to feed off dumbo babys because they have to super cute effect.

I understand that, but when I don't have offspring I need to buy feeders and don't want those uneaten feeders to come in contact with my breeders.

No they don't. They just send all the females to some stores, and all the males to others. The Petsmart on Johnson's Ferry only sells females.
Most all of my breeders are now dumbo's, most produced by myself.

AWWWEEE!! I like the coloring of the female she is pretty.
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
Cute female-I ended up with a bunch of dumbos all sorts of really cute ones-siamese, silvers, blues. It is easy to get caught up in keeping lots of them as it does suck off cute ones for feed-but i end up doing same with hairless too. Try to sell pets to pay for their food but sometimes strike out. I do love the big ears though-weanling are the cutest
Re: Finally got a pair of Dumbo rats.
Petsmarts separate by stores. some carry females while others carry males, this way you cannot end up with mix-ups or accidental pregnancies.
And as a side note... Breeding that pair together is going to end in a few dead babies. Your female is extremely high-white and the male is hooded which is also considered a high-white. They will more than likely create offspring that will develop mega-colon so keep an eye out for that as the pups develop.
I generally breed solid males to high white female so that I don't have issues with megacolon. Good luck with the dumbos, every one of my breeders are dumbo and some are rex. We have all sorts of pairings and have come up with some interesting combos.
