Please Tell me the addiction stops....
Does it stop? I'm sure it doesn't right?
Because i just got my 1st BP about 2months ago and now i currently own 3 within 2months. I cant stop looking at buying more, or looking at local breeders, or the reptile forums. Its like tattoo's i just wanted one, and i am at 6 now.....and want more!
I have a feeling its not going to stop, and i will just keep buying and buying more!
I love them! I want them all!
My sister just came to stay with us for a while and she brought her 7 snakes. So now we have 9 snakes in my house!
And i feel like its not enough!

So tell me.....When did it stop for you? or is the addiction still going?

You're doomed just like the rest of us. I've been keeping them 4 years and I still always want more :D

I've stopped it dead at 9 for now. There's a few touch-and-go moments where I see one and my jaw drops and I see the price and, "Oh gosh! I can totally afford that!"

... then I make myself remember the dreadful, awful nights where everyone synchronizes their poo, just before I head to bed... and think maybe one more isn't a good idea quite yet :P

It does not stop, it simply becomes more focused (hopefully - or you are in real trouble). Once you start species hopping then it is doomed!

We all started with one, I am somewhere around 80 at the moment, with a season coming up in which I am producing snakes that I want to keep... I tend to forget they are supposed to go up for sale at some point. :D

I remember being told "You know... that tank over there DOES take up a lot of room"... then came the rack in the bedroom, the breeding rodents in the walk in closet, then the two rooms to house the snakes and the rats, and now the coat closet has been commandeered as well, and a colubrid rack is being built, just really do not know where to put it.

Perhaps I should levitate it somewhere?

I was addicted before I even bought my first one! I currently have 3, I know what the next one will be, and know what the two after that will be. And, know all breeding plans for the next 3-4 years.

I'd say no, it doesn't stop, but definitely gets more focused!

My problem lies in my inability to turn down anything free, I only bought my first bp and my carpet..guy at work gave me the king, friend of a friend gave me another bp, and then a buddy of mine gave me a boa today. No complaints though!

No addiction doesnt end just gets worse. You see more and more things that interest you and before you know it the new house you were thinking has to have an extra bedroom... for the critters...... I know that because that is my dilema right now....

nope never stops I started out with a sngle black rat snake ( local wild ) I currently have 23 snakes. I been doing reptiles removals for only 3 years. and I have doubled the collection in those 3 years. That also because the SPCA in delaware does not handle reptiles at all. and i limited myself to snakes only. I end up only buying 9 of the snakes the rest are rescues or the result of rescues or the unplanned breeding that happen when a snake came in with mites and i manage to transport them into the reptile room ( since my QT room currently my bed room) I need my own place to house snakes and rodents. I figure if i can get a 3 bedroom place with a garage I can turn the garage into a 4 room (6 if it a double car garage) reptile building. 2 rooms for snakes 1 room a rodent room and a office type room . if a double car deal I have a restroom and a bedroom right out ther then only got ot go to the main house to eat and help mom. Shethen has her room and 2 guest rooms and no reptiles in the house ( she got friends that don't visit due to the snakes) :snake:

the rat I doubled was 5 then 11 and now 23 so next year I should be around 48 snakes lol.. ( need to be shot and disowned at that point my family says lol)

The addiction to buying various snakes will stop. There is always that phase where you end up with about 40 snakes from 10 different species... But the addiction to reptiles itself will NEVER stop. I started out with 43 snakes and have compressed mine to mainly BPs, Spotteds/Childrens, Carpets, and corns.

    Sure it does ;)

At least for a week or two :devilish:

When I had one as a pet I never though I would breed, than I started to breed and I thought I would have 10-20 at the most, well 65 snakes and 5 species later I can tell you that obviously it has not really worked as planned. ;)

Addiction? What addiction? It's not addicting, it's a way of life. You know, like eating and breathing.

Don't worry, it'll slow down once you realize you can't spend 24 hours a day scrubbing water bowls.

ive had ball pythons for over ten years and my addiction is stronger than ever!
its hard not to be with all these crazy new morph combos coming out all the time. trust me, your addiction might not go away but you will learn to deal with it. that is unless your rich.
eg. you bought your first snake and terrarium, now you want more so you get a few more. then a few more after that. now your room is full.
then you find out that every good handler needs a quarantine room. that's when you realize its a great excuse to get another one.
now that space has become a major issue you realize that its time to build a rack.
ah.. then there is the expense of feeding day. and the guilt of not being able to locate enough rats to feed your whole collection.
the list of things can go on, and on, and on .....

what im trying to say is that sooner or later you will find a breaking point that will force you to say enough is enough. i want another one but cant afford to feed or house it. it all balances out in the end.
my best advice would have to be good luck and choose wisely when you buy. after all space is limited.

Has not stopped for me. I started out with my first snake on December 5th, 2006. Within the year, I added 4 ball pythons. Now I have 11 snakes total, 8 of them being ball pythons. I have plans to expand my collection much much more! I'm hoping to get two more snakes in 2010 as well as breed two of my females.

Re: Please Tell me the addiction stops....
Mine stopped for three years after I got my first one. Then I figured out how to easily maintain a Brazilian Rainbow (one of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen), so I got one. Then I found the most beautiful Lesser ever. And bought him, with no urgent plans to breed.

One year after I bought the Lesser, I've added 10 more ball pythons and a Green Tree Python. My family thinks I'm insane. My friends (mostly) think it's only slightly insane. I'm in reptile heaven.

My budget needs me to stop buying new snakes for at least the next six months to a year, but I've got all I need to do several nifty projects, so that's fine. Muah ha ha ha ha!

Future living spaces will be required to have an extra bedroom to be the snake room. Yesssss, preciousssss, it will....

It has various phrases, if you ever get serious about breeding your collection will take off like a rocket. You will always say just one more but it never works out that way. I knew it was bad when the guest bedroom turned into a reptile room and the basement turned into a rodent breeding room. I plan on getting atleast 10 more snakes in 2010 for future breeding projects.

I need to make him go on here a little more. ;) But know he says..."We are a BP family"...no other reptiles....just BP's). Gotta break him of that as I want a Panther Chamelion and my son wants an iguana and a beardie....

And I remember when Deborah had about 10 ball pythons! LOL

I was also - no other reptiles, just BP's. Then came the cresties, and the leos, and the california kings and just recently the black milks! I quit counting snakes once I hit 50 of them.

Nah, doesn't really stop... It's slowing down a little for me. I'm a financial freak and when you look at the cost to feed your colletion frozen rats for a year it's an eye opener.

I will give you one word of advice. Don't get caught up in wanting more, and quickly buying snakes. Save your money and buy quality snakes. I would rather have two high quality snakes than ten average ones.

Re: Please Tell me the addiction stops....
To be honest, I thought it stopped when I was younger. I grew up on a farm in the middle of no where in Idaho. I would go out as a kid and catch snakes of all sorts (yes, even some hots. dumb looking back, but I was pretty confident about my snake handling skills at the time. haha) At any given time, I had probably about 10+ different snakes in my bedroom. Then when I hit junior high/highschool age we moved, and I spent my time chasing girls instead.

Recently a friend of mine had a RTB he couldn't take care of anymore (he really didn't do a good job to begin with.. :( ) so I took it off his hands. And the addiction came back full force. :) I have since setup a little snake rack, and have added to the collection. I'm about to move in the next few days, and plan on really diving in once I am settled in the new location! cant wait!

I own one Ball Python right now, but in the near future I want to buy 2 more, breed them and keep the babies. I don't think I'll become a breeder and start selling them, I feel like I have a deep, spiritual bond with my animal family. Who needs kids anyway? :P
