identifying fires
What do you look for when determining a fire from a normal.
color , eyes , belly , pattern etc.
I have this male that first of all may be a granite but he also has other features. He is much lighter with more yellows than a normal and continues to get lighter, plus he has green eyes.
heres a couple pics of him with a normal. These were the best I could get, he looks lighter in person. I will need to take some shots of him in sunlight then you can see his true colors better. Gotta wait till next summer though.

Re: identifying fires
The only way to prove it is breed it to a fire and produce a lucy. Other than that if you got it as a normal it is exactly that a light colored normal.

Re: identifying fires
Color can fool you from time to time -- Belly is the primary marker for a FIRE. :)

so what do you look for on the belly?
Any other things to look for. I would also like to know for when I purchase one, and If I breed one to tell the babies apart.

Re: identifying fires
Belly will be clear with Pied-like markers running down the back half of the animal.

Re: identifying fires

In my personal opinion its not a fire but a nice normal sorry!!!!!!!!!

Re: identifying fires
his belly is nearly clear and he does have a slight pied marker. If anything he could be a granite so I will breed him to see if that is genetic. Ill wait till summer next year when he is bigger and take new pics. Like I said he keeps getting lighter so who knows how he will look then. When he was a baby he looked like the other normals just with alot of orange.

Re: identifying fires
Looks like a normal to me, but there is a LOT of variation in fires. however I notice that a lot of them have a star-like mark on their heads and moderate blushing, the yellows are also fairly pronounced in them.
But as I said there is a lot of variation, and I mean A LOT. They arent like lessers or spiders or pieds, they arent completely obvious when you see them, a lot are, many arent.

I picked it up in a pet store 5 years ago for one of my hatchlings and $10. I normally sex my baby’s right out of the egg, they are nice and plump and almost pop themselves. Anyway, tried to pop it in the pet store and thought this was a girl for the last five years. Could never seem to get "her" up to good female breeding weight. Been getting close so put my mojave male in its cage last night while cleaning and all heck breaks loose. They spill the water in no time and are thumping against the sides of the tub. So I start to wonder if I got it wrong. Tried but didn't want to push hard enough to pop an adult so put it in with a proven female. This morning they are locked up. If I had known his opinion that he's male I could have breed him 4 years ago!
He isn’t as pretty as the one adult fire I’ve seen but still stands out as not normal. What is he?

Re: identifying fires
I'm usually pretty good at identifying fires.. or at least I think I am.
Neither the OP nor randy's look like fires to me, both look like normals.
There IS a ton of variation in normals.

Re: identifying fires
Wow. :O I've actually NEVER been fond of Fires (not that I HATED them, just never found anything great about the morph) but after looking at those photos that Superballs put in... *Whistles*
Mind you, those are some of the best examples. Might be a little hard to find something to top those.

Re: identifying fires
I've never heard the thing about pied markers down part of their belly, that's really interesting! Superballs, those pictures are absolutely stunning!
I have two "possible" fires that I purchased as such. :) I would've bought them anyway, they're both so gorgeous, but I'll throw up some pics for fun.
The first is Gideon, who we purchased as a baby. He's a yellowbelly, but had been resold a couple of times, and the breeder's records had been misplaced, and there had been two clutches of yellowbellies produced that year, one just yb and one ybXfire. I don't know if he'll prove out or not, but either way he's a looker:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...gideonsun2.jpg
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...gideonsun3.jpg
And then we have Wadjet, a little female from Casey Lazik. She came from a fireXfire clutch but didn't look like a fire or a normal, so we paid slightly more than we would've for a normal, but nowhere near the price of a fire. She totally screams yellow in person, she's gorgeous:

Re: identifying fires
Few pics for you. May help identify the dinkers.
Fire belly - kind of grey/faded looking 'pied markers.' You can see the head marker on these pics.

Re: identifying fires
Here's some pics of my fire. He came from a reliable source. He is for sure a fire.
This first pic is from a few months ago. It shows the head marker pretty well.

This one I just went and took with my cell phone camera to try and show the belly markings. Same snake as above.

All the ones i've even seen have it to a greater or lesser extent - but it's there.
-
Re: identifying fires
All the ones I've seen definitely do too.
-
Re: identifying fires
They all have the head spot, but it's not always that bright.
Do they all have green eyes? That's something I haven't heard of yet.

All the ones i've seen have kind of pale steel gey/buley eyes rather than the pastel greeny colour.
-
Re: identifying fires
Mine has dark grey eyes. They're pretty, no doubt, but they mostly look black from a distance.

Re: identifying fires
my fire's eyes are pretty dark, not totally black but close.

Re: identifying fires
Kk, mine are dark too which is why I was curious. But I confirmed it with my friend who breeds them, hers range from steel gray to normal colored.
-
Re: identifying fires
blushing and a co-dom belly is more important than colour as far as 'telling' if it is or not but don't forget, crappy looking co-doms tend to produce more crappy looking co-doms. When you see a GOOD fire in the flesh it's unmistakeable, and once they get some weight they should start looking like a ghost.

Nice snakes,
But it looks like your male fire is giving me the finger every time I look at the photo.
You could post the pics in a new thread - they might get seen by more people that way. :)
