Barely got a Mojave Python

Hi,
I just wanted everyone to know that Im a new Ball Python owner, well snake owner at that! If anyone could give me tips, on feeding, home, and stuff. Thanks to anyone who does.

Dont handle the snake for 2 weeks after setting it up. It will become distressed and be less likely to eat for you. After this try feeding it an appropriate sized rodent, 10-15% of its body mass or around the size of the snake's thickest point, not larger. If it doesnt eat the first time, wait a week and try again.

Easy fix, go out and get a tub and a cheap heating pad for right now, also grab a rheostat (dimmer) and a thermometer with a probe. Dont forget to put holes in the tub.

Or you can get a tank at walmart for like 10$, in fact you can probably get everything you need except the heat pad. Also pick up aluminum foil and its best if your thermostat has a humidity reader on it.

If you use a tub then the pad should be the smallest you can find (the ting plastic friendly ones) if you get a tank get one that takes up 1/3 of the tank's base.

Humidity: 50-60%
Temp on the pad: 90-95 F

NEVER USE CEDER OR PINE BEDDING, they're poisonous. I suggest Cypress or unprinted newspaper, personally.

Your snake will need something to hide in and a water dish, it doesnt need to be large, because its just to drink.

By far the hardest part is leaving it alone for the first few weeks, and getting it to eat for you the first time. I wish you luck, it will be a long road. :gj:

I would say read as much as you can on here...there is tons of great info. Also check out the care sheet. It is such a great source of accurate information. And trust me....there is a lot of crappy info out there.

Congrats on the new baby.... I love mojo's I finally got one a few months ago. Anywho as far as keeping them my big tip is Tubs just seem to work better than aquarims atleast for me, seems to keep humidity better, animals seem to be more comfortable.... and price is nice compared to a 20 gallon long you would need for an adult ball.....

Thanks Oxylepy I had no idea pine was poisonous, I removed my snake from the cage as soon as I read this, cleaned it, then put him back in.

If that's your snake in your profile picture I do not think it is a mojave. :/

If you payed for a normal, you probably got a normal. (under $100)

Pine isn't poisonous to reptiles.

Kiln dried is fine.

No, pine oil is poisonous. However the kiln dried removes that issue. :gj:

I have Alfapet #1 Pine Shaving, natural pine aroma. Bedding for dogs, birds, ferrets, reptiles, and other small animals.

If its a normal its fine, hes still one badass snake.

if it smells like pine i'm almost sure that means the toxic oils are still in the wood.

I've used kiln dried pine when I was breeding my own rats for feeders. Never had a problem and it still smelled like pine.

The Alfapet stuff your using has oils in it still and SHOULD not be used for your snake.

That was info I found on Walmarts website, it said it still has the oils in it.

I highly doubt you got a mojave or cinny then.
They usually run around $300-400.

They guy we bought it from said if we hadnt bought from him it would've been 200 in a pet store.
