Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Would you consider yourself addicted to keeping reptiles and/or amphibians? I know there are some people who do not specialize in amphibians, and others that don't specialize in reptiles, but I'm asking do you consider yourself addicted to what your are keeping?
Some people just have reptiles or amphibians because they like them, think they are cool, and want to show off, but they just don't keep them for the love of the hobby. If you're one of those people, select no. If you are keeping your reptiles and/or amphibians for the love of the hobby and are willing to provide all the care they need, select yes.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I'm not sure.. I've been into snakes for a bout 5 months now and I've owned 3 ball pythons, 2 red tail, a bearded dragon and a salmontine boa. Am I? O_o
Noob question. What do the numbers mean in a lot of peoples signatures? for example "2.0 Something python"

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I'm addicted to reptiles and amphibs, and pets in general.
The fact that i spend too much time on this one website is proof.
I'm also addicted to TV, fishing, and plenty of other things I'll not bother to mention. I think that my addiction to reptiles and pets is pretty harmless except to my wallet :) However the happiness it brings is totally worth it.

Well said. My reptiles always seem to put a smile on my face somehow. I don't know how they do it, but they just can.:)

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Yeah Im addicted. Not like I was though. When I started out I was addicted to the point that I impulse bought several snakes because of the good deal, instead of considering what Im going to do with them breeding wise. I had big dreams of producing lots of clutches and sharing my animals with the world. Now Im more focused on producing less animals but the best quality examples that I can. Hard lesson to learn, Ive got 3 extra animals now that I cant do anything with for a loooooong time.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
honestly the way I feel towards keeping reptiles must be how a junky need's his/her crack I just have to buy something when I am at reptile show's I get so excited and shake I just love the hobby and passion others have for it as well. My question is why do drugs when you can buy a ball-python?

All the numbers on the left are males and all the numbers on the right mean female like say i put "2.3 ball pythons" that means i have 2 males and 3 females :P

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I don't really think I'm addicted, addiction is typically considered a problem ;).

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I get the shakes and quivers when im not around my pets, withdrawals are fairly common..

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I do think constantly about getting more and check in on the ones I have about 6 times a day. I have so far controlled myself and have not made any impulse buys, but the desire is certainly there.

"If you are keeping your reptiles and/or amphibians for the love of the hobby and are willing to provide all the care they need, select yes. "
I don't think that really describes an addict tho. I mean addictions are spossed to be something you uncontrollably crave. compare it to caffeine, which i am addicted to. I mean I go to a reptile show or look at stuff online and I do want it. but i have the control not to buy it/steal it. caffeine on the other hand, If i don't drink anything with caffeine for a while, i get a splitting headache, I crave it, I HAVE to have it. luckly my addicition cost less than 2 dollars. but i feel like I would steal a pop if it came down to it lol.
the reptile addict if you ask me, is the person thats going heavily into debt, still aquiring new animals and rescues and as a result it is affecting their family and friends and they might be the ones that are providing adequate care because they don't have the resources. and there is people like this, i remember reading someones story a few weeks ago, sound like he went through AA for reptiles. Local pet store by me, got broken into and the guy stole all sorts of animals, cameras got installed, and the guy got caught stealing more a few weeks later and i guess he had all the previously stolen animals all set up in cages, and he made no efforts to sell any of them, he just wanted them.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Yep. I am incurably addicted. My family tells me every time I see them that I should "get rid" of the snakes. They don't like them at all. And now that my husband and I might start trying for a baby soon, my family keeps bringing it up that I have too many snakes (I only have 11 and I plan on getting more). I think they might think the snakes will eat a baby.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Yes, addiction is a good choice of words.
But, I will submit that, unlike many addictions, this one allows you to get something back, in both tangible and intangible ways. The tangible is being able to sell and/or trade what you produce, which will in some cases mitigate loss, allow a break even proposition, and if you are good at it, make some extra cash in the process.

LOL but there's no better high then watching a clutch of eggs hatch and seeing your BP's first offspring and watching them grow and eat.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I used to be, but am not now. Although, I do still love my snakes.
-
Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
At this time last year I had 2 snakes... Now I'm up to 15 snakes, 4 breeder rats and a tarantula. I think that qualifies as addicted :8:

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Yes!!! Though I only have one, I'd have TONS more if I wasn't still a minor living with my parents!
-
Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I say, there is a very thin line between addiction and obsession...

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I didn't think so. Even after my 50th, I didn't think I had a problem. Then when I was building another rack and not having any place for it, I started to think I may have had a problem. But the thing that turned me around was when I cancelled a weekend vacation because I had eggs that were ready to hatch, the same weekend I was to go away.
I went cold turkey and got out of breeding snakes, and I stayed away for almost 5 years. I know have gooten bit by the bug and have started my collection again.
Who needs a wife anyway?:rolleye2:

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Well I got my first bp 4 months ago and now I have 8 but do I think I am addicted, no. In order for it to be an addiction it would have to be maladaptive which at this point it is not, then again I could just be in "snake addiction denial." lol

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I'm not addicted, I can quit anytime I want.........in fact I'll quit right now...

.......
OK, long enough, when's the next reptile show??? :D

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I am without a doubt addicted to Ball Python morphs.
I blame Kevin McCurley and The Complete Ball Python.
-
Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I have a couple of normals whom I love dearly, and am planning on getting one more (enough to fill up a three tray rack; maybe a 4) and I'm done.
They do receive a near OCD level of care, however.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Hello, My name is Marc, and I have an addiction. I went from owning 1 ball python to going to a show and coming home with 10 more, nothing special but still a big gap between numbers. I like it because it's like constantly taking on new projects and learning more about BPs on a daily basis.

If you look in my sig, it says 1.0 yellowbelly, that means I have 1 male yellowbelly. and under that it sayd 4.6 normals. That would mean that I have 4 males and 6 females. If you ever see 0.0.1, that means that the sex of the herp is still unknown.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
I seem to have misunderstood, when the OP said addicted, she meant, a good pet owner?
I am not addicted, although I enjoy the hobby very much and care for my pets properly. I think at one time I was excited by the consumeristic side of things as a new purchase always gave me a "high" of sorts, in the same way people buy too many of anything. Now I am very content with the snakes I have and do not feel the need to grow my collection, although I am financially able to do so, and still very much enjoy my pets.
When I think of addicted, I think of the people who are spending their last penny on a reptile, and I think that is just sad. Most of all, it is bad for the reptiles if there is no money available for emergency care.

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Hi, my name is Kaylin, and I'm a snakeaholic. ("Hi, Kaylin.") It all started when I was a little girl and my parents got me my first ball python...
:D

Re: Would You Consider Yourself Addicted?
Probably. So I voted yes lol. But I have always been like this with all animals. My dad started taking me to an uncles farm before I could walk. Later on I would always bring home baby rabbits or ducklings from there. Then he started taking me to pet stores almost every weekend. I always had to learn about every animal and hold everything. I only watched cartoons and animal shows growing up. I never had more than 6 reptiles at one time but I decided I wanted to give breeding a try so here I am with 30+ snakes and a beardie :)
