Rating ball pythons
Well it seems like the new thing on here is posting bp's and having people rate them. Just want to see if you guys like the idea. I think i like the idea, I know its just a personnel opion. I think it gives a general consence of the quilty of your bp's what do you guys think?

Re: Rating ball pythons
Doesn't bother me at all. If it makes the OP happy to post it then I am all for it :gj:

Re: Rating ball pythons
I am getting so sick of seeing this. Yea i know i can ignore it, but it seems like everywhere i am i happen to see it.
Why would anybody purposely buy a snake that is low quality. If you happened to like it than why does it matter what other peoples opinions are, that's pretty much all you are getting.
The only thing worse, is when people get pissed when you post there snake is not "beautiful". Don't put bad example of the morph as a poll option if you cant take the criticism

Re: Rating ball pythons
I think its getting kinda old so I don't even look at those threads any more but if others still like them it doesnt bother me.

Re: Rating ball pythons
I post on a chinchilla forum where there is an entire sub-forum dedicated to rating one's chin (it is called "Hot or Not" :P ). It's a "just for fun" thing, but still a popular feature of the site.
Much of animal breeding involves breeding to a standard that is accepted by a large chunk of that animal's fanciers. Granted, in the case of chinchillas and other mammals, there is an actual, set, written standard that one can adhere to. With ball pythons, there isn't one, so all you really have to go by is what impresses you the most when buying (and/or whether or not you can afford that animal ).
So, basically, I don't think there's anything wrong with posting to find out if others agree with your assessment of your animal ... As long as you don't go ditching an animal that you like just because it got a "low score" on a completely meaningless online poll.

Re: Rating ball pythons
I don't mind the idea. I think everyone likes to be told they have a nice animal, but I think it's like asking your wife/husband how this shirt looks. Most will say "looks good".
My only annoyance is that I like to use the "Active Threads From The Forums" (last 15 posts) on the main page to keep updated daily on recent threads, but it's quickly becoming clogged with "rate my snake" posts.
So, let me rate your snake psychically, no picture required...Hmm.. shh. ok.. "It's beautiful, but then again I see beauty in every snake." ;)

Re: Rating ball pythons
i think its a bad idea, i mean you can't tell someone it got a low score or you'd be insensitive. just post pictures of your snake and leave it that, people will tell you what they think, if its low quality there will be very few replys with standard comments simple as that.
i really don't think you should have to ask it eigher, you should know where your animal stands, unless your really not familiar with the morph, but then if you ask me you shouldn't have bought the animal, if thats what your worried about.
but i know where my animals stand
1.0 Lesser 4, hes great example but still has dark spots that might fade (im hoping)
0.1 Albino 3, she still keeping contrast well, but besides that just average
0.1 Pastel 3, her color is awesome but very dirty pattern
0.1 Pinstripe 2, run of the mill pin, doesn't have any of the high orange color or anything so yea, light colored atleast
0.3 Normal 2 are 2's, partial stripes bout all they got going for them and the other has a intresting pattern kinda reduced so ill say 3
1.1 Jungle Carpet both 4, not trophys but yellow is close to it
1.0 Jag IJ Carpet 4, again not trophy, but she has alot of growing to do
0.0.1 ATB easy 5, 95% red what more can you say, just a little white on her/his chin and neck, no pattern.
but i bet you anything if i made a rate thread, I'd get all 4's and 5's. someone might try to be somewhat honest and throw a 3 in there for the ones i would call 2's. should we run an experiment?

Re: Rating ball pythons
Every body loves their own snakes..its OK if you can handle criticism..I love seeing others collections though :D

Re: Rating ball pythons
I have noticed that they seem to be popping up like crazy! It doens't bother me. I think a "hot or not" thread would be kind of fun :D I do find it hard to be honest and tell people what I really think.....

Re: Rating ball pythons
I like seeing other specimens! If I can't say anything nice than I don't post a reply!

Re: Rating ball pythons
I think the annoying threads are the "I didnt use the search feature or google. Why is my BP not eating?" Im just sayin...

Re: Rating ball pythons
I like it gives a beginner and experts a chance to enjoy other people's morphs and excitement for there animal.

Re: Rating ball pythons
I did it because I was genuinely interested in others' opinions--whatever their opinion might be. I would hope people aren't rating high just to be nice, as that would totally defeat the purpose. I at least haven't seen evidence that most people are doing that.
The question wasn't 'is this an attractive snake'...it's about how well it represents the morph. Even a dark brown pastel is a beautiful animal, but that doesn't mean it's a good example of the pastel morph.
With most pets that people show, there are 'breed standards'--a guideline as to what a certain color/type is supposed to look like, which animals can be compared to. Nothing like that exists with ball pythons (nor should it, just yet), so the best we can do is find out what the majority opinion is on what these morphs are supposed to be, at their very best. That doesn't mean there is no room for experimenting to take a morph in a completely different direction. A Graziani line pastel doesn't look much like a lemon pastel, for example.
Let's face it--with as much time, money, and effort as we put into producing these animals, eventually we are going to want to actually show them. We will have standards for temperament, for conformation, and for colors and patterns for each morph. It will happen eventually--why not? It will be fun, and it will be another way to earn a little money as well, as most shows award prizes to the top ranking critters, in addition to the prestige they offer.
For most of the threads in the photography section, everyone posts their animal, and people reply with various innocuous comments like 'wow!" and "great looking snake!". The poll just gives people a way to express their opinion a bit more precisely, and probably more honestly, since the poll is anonymous. Someone who doesn't want to hear anything negative doesn't have to use that method, and there's nothing to prevent people from replying to the thread without participating in the poll, if that's what they prefer. (Though replying to the thread to complain about the poll is much more annoying at this point, lol).

Re: Rating ball pythons
I think it's a great idea to have a "hot or not" forum here on bp.net. Perhaps it could be set up in a way where the post isn't bumped every time someone votes on a snake. I also like to use the active topics to browse here and it does get annoying with all of the rating threads clogging it.
-
Re: Rating ball pythons
I'll grant you, the fact they bump to the top when someone votes could cause some clutter, but it looks like folks are actually having a lot of fun with it.

Re: Rating ball pythons
While it's slightly annoying to me, I understand the idea behind it. Most picture threads posting a Spider, Pastel, etc. are about as common as someone posting a normal. They don't get much attention because most people don't waste their time posting on a thread of someone's new animal unless they know that person or it's a super rare morph. I understand that several regulars do take the valuable time to do so, but not a fraction of the people using the polls do so. That being said, the polling is a simple and fast way to get someone's opinion on your animal. All in all, very slightly annoying, but I tolerate and participate.
Anyway, just my opinion.

Re: Rating ball pythons
I like seeing other peoples BPs. I don't like it when people try to see if they "got their moneys worth". IMO, if you want to show off your snake, show it off. People will leave comments regardless.
The rating doesn't bother me as much as other things though. I'm a pretty tolerant person, if something annoys me I stay clear of it.

Re: Rating ball pythons
I think the great thing about this site is that you can post whatever you want. If enough people like it, they respond in some way, and it goes to the top. If they don't, it gets brushed under the rug. Obviously there are some people who like to rate the snakes, or they wouldn't keep popping up to the top. I personally like to see people's pics.
-
Re: Rating ball pythons
I like the "Rate my snake" threads about as much as I like seeing the list of 28 snakes, 4 dogs, 3 kids and one "insert snide remark here" husband at the bottom of EVERY post someone makes on EVERY thread they reply to.
In my opinion, both are kind of childish.
IF you must do a rate my snake thread, do it before you buy it, so if people say it is the ugliest thing they have ever seen, you know not to buy it. If people love it, then buy it.
I would say, in lieu of rate my snake, just post a pic and sit back and enjoy the honest comments. Then, you will usually get the possitive comments and those that think it is hideous will usually not post anything, since this is the "Friendliest online community for ALL your herping needs!" Right?

Re: Rating ball pythons
I feel too when you post your snake and hear all the good feedback it boast's your confidence in keeping BP as well as make's you feel closer to your snake and the forum community in that your being acknowledged for your hard work with your snakes.

Yes, but I don't see the point in a poll to validate you or your snakes. It seems to me a bit self-centric. Look at me - vote on my snake. Let your snake (and your sales, if that's why you're asking, but it seems a bit late to be asking after you already own the snake) speak for themselves. This is strictly my own opinion.

Re: Rating ball pythons
it's like that crappy site "hot or not" we all visited when we were what, 11 years old?
pointless.
-
Re: Rating ball pythons
I would rather rate BP's than groceries...:rolleye2:

Re: Rating ball pythons
I'm new here so I thought I'd post a reply from that point of view. I am fascinated by the wide variety of morphs and being a newbie, I have no idea what makes a "good" specimen or a "not so good" one. I have found the polls to be a good way to be educated in that aspect from the viewpoint of the experts.
That said, a "Hot or Not" might be a good idea for anyone wishing to participate.

Re: Rating ball pythons
I don't mind it really. I mean yes there have been alot lately but so what,If you don't like them then move on to the next thread.Theres probally 10,000+ threads on this site what is the big deal if theres 100 rate my snake threads?
-
Re: Rating ball pythons
It's getting way old such as most band wagon posts do.
-
Re: Rating ball pythons
not everyone will take the time to leave a comment. most people will vote on a poll just to see the poll and view what others think.
-
Re: Rating ball pythons
its just like any other thread in the pictures forum, perhaps with a little more worth because it asks you for your input rather than just showcasing the snake(s). if you can get annoyed by this you have some other problems lol
it gives people a chance to be honest and anonymous if they don't really like the snake for whatever reasons

Not completely anonymous. You can check to see who voted and where they placed thier vote.
To answer the post question, rating snakes is growing on me. I find it interesting to see what everyone thinks about certain morphs.
