New BP! I need help!
I just got a baby girl ghost! She's really cute, but I'm having problems with humidity...
I am using coconut husk substrate and I think that it's the cause of my high humidity.
I had 2 main questions:
How do I lower the humidity from ~80%?
I was thinking of taking some of the husk out and replacing it with aspen.
Where should my hygrometer probe be within the tank?
I currently have it placed in the middle, closer to the ground level.

Re: New BP! I need help!
Probe placement sounds right.
Your substrate should not be wet. I know you need to soak a brick of that stuff so it expands. I would either set it out to dry for a day or two or put it in the oven on 200* for 15-20 mintes.

telling what you keep her in would help. but yeah, dry out the substrate. sounds like you got it to wet i highly doubt it would naturally be that high. if you have a screen cage top uncover it and or use a heat light to lower it, but once the substrate drys out that will make it to low...

She's being kept in a 10long. But it seems that the consensus is the substrate is too moist. I will dry it out now. Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: New BP! I need help!
i use coconut husk.. what kind do you use that you have to soak it first? i just buy and big bag of it and go.. i know that you dont have to spray it down so much cause it can retain water really well?

You can buy coconut husk in a brick and soak it in water.

i see, i see.. i would think that would just mold up way too soon?

Re: New BP! I need help!
I bought the kind that is just a big bag also, but I feel that it just retained too much moisture and is evaporating over my UTH.
I threw some of it in the oven and it has definitely dried, but my humidity levels are still rather high (76-80%).
Should I just wait it out and hope that the humidity drops? I don't want to have to keep moving her around while I fine tune her enclosure...

Re: New BP! I need help!
Just to clarify, what kind of hygrometer are you using?
Have you done anything to the screen top of the enclosure?

I am using the Zilla thermometer/hygrometer combo.

I've left the screen exposed, so there is nothing to hold in the moisture... it is solely coming from the substrate...

Re: New BP! I need help!
It could be possible that the hygrometer sensor got wet. In that case you will get a somewhat inaccurate reading.
I would let it dry out for a few hours and see if it comes down.
70-80% humidity for a little while isn't a big deal.

Re: New BP! I need help!
just use a small heat lamp to balance it out, putting it in the oven just seems like over-doing it

Re: New BP! I need help!
the oven thing worked... its still a little moist, but over my 3 or 4 hours at work, the humidity dropped from 8X% to 71%... thats just the ambient humidity though. within her hide, its definitely more humid... hopefully, it'll continue dropping... but would it be too bad a thing to maintain high 60's to low 70's?

Re: New BP! I need help!
I use coconut fibre in the brick form and I let it dry out for a day or two before using it! Is your water dish near the warm side? That can also raise the humidity! At 70%, I wouldn't worry! It will dry out soon!

Re: New BP! I need help!
At first, I had the water dish on the warm side... but I quickly moved it over to the cool side when I saw the humidity level. But yeahhh!!! Now we're at 67% !

Re: New BP! I need help!
67% is fine! A little high but it will be okay!
