Thanks for the compliments. They do get a very washed out look, and some of that may be me yet figuring out how to do the lighting properly. :)

This was a glorified point-and-shoot, the canon S5 IS, and I added a Canon 430EX II flash. You can get the camera used very reasonable on Ebay, I spent more on the flash than I did the camera. With a nice lighting setup, you can get good photos with even a basic point and shoot. The key is knowing your equipment. Expensive cameras aren't meant to be used in the "automatic" mode, so if you don't know how to use all the settings, those extra dollars spent won't do much good.
