tegu's hibernating?

Hi there from the Philippines. i just recently got myself a argentina black and white tegu. so coming from a tropical country (yeah i know no heating for my snakes and humidity is just right) my question is what are the effects of the tegu not able to hibernate (since we don't have winter)? will they still breed?

Some people do say(the majority of folks with experiance breeding that I've talked to) that in order to breed the tegus, you must let them hibernate.

I don't think I've seen anyone not allow the tegus to hibernate and breed them successfully. All the people I know of that have bred and got eggs, hibernated. It's not definitive proof, but it's all I got for ya.

I hibernated mine, and got a great clutch of eggs. One day I'll get antoher red male to breed more, cause you gotta love tegus!

There are no guarantees some Gus jut don't hibernate. In some cases climate and where you live may have something to do with it and in other cases it doesn't. If the tegu decides its going to hibernate it's going to do so. Some people try to change it one way or the other if they don't want the Gu to hibernate. If they live in a cold climate they up the temps in the enclosure and extend lighting times. While people that want their Gus to hibernate do just the opposite. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I'm in Vegas and my 2 1/2 yr old Gu Dino has never hibernated a day in his life. He slows down (more of a burmate) during winter but thats about it. He's producing sperm plugs now so does that mean that he's infertile? I doubt it, but there's only one way to find out. Find a female that has never hibernated and breed them. I didn't buy him to breed so I'm not sure if I want to do that though. Although I might,..just to try it and see if its true or not.

My Blue Tegu's have never hibernated and I've gotten fertile clutches the past 2 years. You can't believe everything you read. :rolleyes:

Most B&W's & Reds do hibernate, you can't stop that. Our male Red has been down for over a month. The Blues get up every day, maybe not up as long as they used to, and they still eat.

thanks thanks actually I don't plan on breeding him/her?( not sure of the sex:oops: ) but i just want to know all the possible effects on the hibernating thing thanks thanks to all who replied.got to love having those gu's around..:D

My six year old female Arg (acquired at 3 yrs. of age) has never hibernated and she is doing fine.

Wait you don't give heat to your snake or Tegu?
So your saying the snake enclosures have a hot spot of 95F and cool spot of 85F by itself?

And don't Tegu's need VERY high basking temperatures?

By the way,..Love the Gu! Way more speckles than bands :D:gj:. Most tegus bands are clearly defined on their back but that lil cutie is freckled, speckled, spotted and dotted all over :8: very nice contrast. :P

my tegu have a basking lamp which reaches around 100f in a certain area so i think my tegu just looks for the right spot..:D

snakes here i don't give heat since temperature in the room alone is around 87f-90f++, so nothing like a stainless steel water bowl couldn't fix for the cool spot. we'll here in the Philippines breeders here of BPs don't really mind the hot spot or cool spot thing.. obviously you haven't been to the Phil. sir,the climate here is almost exactly the same as they have in the wild (africa right?). been keeping these snakes for almost 3 years with no problem what so ever. "dont try to fix whats not broken and what works for you may not work with others." i always say but thats beside the point of the thread started here.

thanks for the kind words sir, BTW since we don't get turkey here so often. i feed my gu, pinkie rats and sometimes ground chicken and liver when my bruno gets a little bit bigger i will try to give him chicks (quail for that matter just enough to fit his mouth). i feed my gu everyday would that be enough? nutritional wise?

My All American Tegu doesn't seem to be slowing down and he eats everyday. If I forget or skip a day he doesn't have a problem with letting me know it by chasing me when I walk by. Or comes flying out of his hide mouth wide open when I open the door of his enclosure. My 2 1/2 year old Tegu Dino only eats everyday in the summer time and that depends on what he had the day before. With whole foods he'll eat every 2-4 days or he'll take something light like meat mash w/ fruits and veggies in between the whole meals.

So,... yeah as long as its still accepting food, I would feed it everyday. Its a growing baby, some people feed them twice a day. :)

Also don't worry about not having turkey, most meats from beef to fish are okay as long as they are low in fat. If its wild caught (I wouldn't recommend it but) freeze it for at least 24 hrs to kill most parasites.

ok got it..i breed my own mice and rats for the consumption of my pets..but i see your point in killing bacteria and stuff..thanks..:bow:
