-- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Tried searching to see if we have one already but no results so I'm making one!
Any MMA fans/fighters here? If so, talk about it here!
UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun is coming up this weekend and I'm pumped. :taz:

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
I love watching it.
I've thought about spending the next couple years getting in shape and training a bit and having a few fights.
I wanted to do kickboxing as a kid but my parents didnt let me, I have a bit of time now so it's something maybe worth purusing.
I'm pumped to see machida again :)

Ah, finally a fan! Lol.
As a kid I was a fan of boxing until I found out about MMA. I started out with Kempo Karate for a few years almost obtaining a Black Belt.
I have been training for two years at Gracie Barra and currently a Blue Belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I also trained MMA for 2 years at the same gym, it's an amazing experience.
I plan on fighting this year hopefully, if not the beginning of next year at our local arena.
I'm all for people getting in shape through this, I used to weigh 220 pounds and now I'm walking around as light as 180 pounds (when I'm not slacking =P).
Who's your favorite fighter? I've been a Shogun fan since 2004 so I'm going to have to root for my guy, I also like Machida though. WAR SHOGUN!
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
I'll be honest, when it comes to rooting for a fighter, it all comes down to personality.
I like fighters who are sportsmen, friendly, and most of all humble.
I don't even enjoy watching the mean, rude people fight. I don't even like to see them be beat up, that's not the point of this. It's a darn sport, not a chance to legally pound somebody into the ground to release your own frustrations.
That said, I've really enjoyed watching the machida fights. I want to see someone take him on and force him to show off the variety of training he has had throughout his life.
I don't have a favorite fighter, everything is way too overblown by the media and promotion of the UFC for me to really know these guys well enough to have an opinion on a 'favorite'. All I know is that I enjoy watching two guys give each other respect and compete in one of the most difficult sports in the world.
P.S. Chuck Liddell was apparently on Dancing with the Stars. Wish I'd caught that before now.. lol

That's understandable. I do like a bunch of fighters just because of their personality. That's what the sport is all about, being respectful and putting your skills to the test.
I also dislike disrespectful fighters, but in reality they do make people want to watch the fight, it's about selling the fight IMO.
I find some fighters incredibly hilarious like Rampage Jackson, Mayhem Miller, guys that make me laugh and at the same time put on a show I also like.
Guys like Brock Lesnar, kinda erk me a little bit. But he likes playing a "bad guy" role from what I see.

Nice! Where are you training?
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Brock Lesnar knows all about selling the fight for $. It's too bad that sports are all pretty much driven by $. He is one difficult guy to compete against however.
If I had to pick a fighter to see in a show TODAY, it'd probably be Jens Pulver.

And that's why they gave him a title shot so quick =P. But yeah of course an organization would want to make the money, but so far they're putting on great fights for us to see.
I can't wait until he fights Shane Carwin, someone who is about his size/weight, and also a wrestler with excellent hands.

Wow, good stuff man. I'm currently training at Gracie Barra. Do you get to train with Matt Serra or are there other trainers?

I'm hoping carwin can take lesnar... He's done well and all I just really can't stand the guy. I'll be pulling for machida when he fights shogun. Anderson silva mentioned moving up a weight class a while back, have yall heard that? Silva vs machida would be one hell of a fight...
Fedor was my favorite fighter for a long time but I've lost a little faith in him since he turned down danas offer a while back

Yeah that is pretty awesome. Hopefully I'll be seeing some of my training partners up there someday.

Unfortunately Silva stated he would never fight Machida, so if the opportunity came, he wouldn't sign the contract.
I still love Fedor, even though he didn't sign with the UFC, he still has some good fights in Strikeforce, Rogers, Werdum, and Overeem. Maybe a rematch with Arlovski if Arlovski can get back in to contention.

Machida would tear him apart. Not for the reasons you might think (younger, bigger), but because Silva's done. He's winding his career down and is ready to stop working so hard all the time. He's got many great fights in him still, but I don't think he has the drive to fight all the time for years to come.
Of course this is all speculation on reading things and limited information presented by the media.

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Never miss an event.
These are my picks for the night.
Lyoto Machida v. Mauricio Rua ---------- Lyoto Machida
Cain Velasquez v. Ben Rothwell ---------- Cain Velasquez
Gleison Tibau v. Josh Neer ---------- Josh Neer
Joe Stevenson v. Spencer Fisher ---------- Joe Stevenson
Anthony Johnson v. Yoshiyuki Yoshida ---------- Anthony Johnson
Ryan Bader v. Eric Schafer ---------- Ryan Bader
Antoni Hardonk v. Pat Barry ---------- Antoni Hardonk
Yushin Okami v. Chael Sonnen ---------- Yushin Okami
Jorge Rivera v. Rob Kimmons ---------- Jorge Rivera
Kyle Kingsbury v. Razak Al-Hassan ---------- Razak Al-Hassan
Stefan Struve v. Chase Gormley ---------- Stefan Struve
Let me know if you agree or disagree.

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Yeah I think silva and machida train together don't they? But I can still wish ha. I think it would be a good fight, they're both incredible fighters. The way silva embarassed Forrest, man I don't think he's close to being done
who does diego sanchez fight next? I'd like to see him have a shot at the belt

I don't know if Anderson/Machida would be a very exciting fight. They are both defensive fighters. And we have already seen what happens when Anderson fights someone who does not attack. Not very interesting.

Diego will be fighting Penn on Dec. 12th
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Like what snakecharmer said, Diego will fight for the belt in December against Penn. Great fight IMO.
My picks for UFC 104 are:
Shogun (Yes I may be the only one :P but I stick with my favs)
Velasquez
Neer
Stevenson
Rumble
Right now I'm just picking for the main card.

Yea.... I was really on the fence with the Dragon/Shogun fight. But in the end I have to go with the DRAGON. Should be a great fight either way.

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
I'm looking to watch some matches with my karate buddies. We are all world class fighters, so it'd be quite funny to see us watching the matches, lol. I tend not to watch ufc that much, mainly because it frustrates me. Machida is deff a favorite of mine, I love watching him fight because of his shotokan background, which is what we are all trained in :D It's always funny listening to the announcers talking about his "odd and unorthodox grandmaster karate style" lmao

Well it's odd in the MMA world because basically no one used it since back in the old days of UFC, where no one really used it effectively. Then here comes Machida who was able to use it for MMA and be very successful at it. But that's the only thing everyone looks at in Machida, no one looks at the fact he has Muay Thai, a BJJ blackbelt, and wrestling skills as well.
I used to take Kempo karate, I wish I took Shotokan, IMO it's one of the better Karate styles.
As far as not watching much UFC, do you mean you don't watch MMA in general or just the UFC?

I mean..if it's on, I'll watch it 80% of the time. When they start this "ground and pound" junk and never move back away from that, I get bored and flip the channel. Ground fighting kind of annoys me. I was brought up getting one hit after they touch the ground, or 3seconds, whichever is first. We were taught that it was disrespectful; not part of "the code". While I know that it's HIGHLY EFFECTIVE! (the bjj and all)and a great fighting tool/style, I really don't see how it's a good thing to draw that out quite as long as they are allowed to, at least from a career standpoint.
You make some great points about his fighting style. Very true. He's one of the few that actually have a solid background in multiple martial arts. He doesn't drastically overextend, doesn't signal exactly where he's going to attack, knows that you can actually MOVE SIDEWAYS, ect.
I just remember how my friends and I watched Machida and that one guy fight earlier this year, and after Joe Roagen (or however you spell his name) was talking about him...we all busted out laughing simultaneously about the kungfu karate master blackbelt style that he was attributing to him, and it remains a running joke with us lol.
He definitely has very good technical skills, and yea no one really gives him any cred for the muay tai or bjj. Those of us trained in some form of martial art can kind of differentiate between the styles when we see them, but I don't think very many "Average joes" really can. And you know how "karate" is kind of used as a blanket term. ::cringe::
More to the point of me not watching it as of late though, is that I don't have CABLE!!!:rofl: :tears:

He already announced his intention to stop fighting, he wanted to stop at the end of this year, but has contractual obligations through 2010.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
I don't enjoy MMA anymore. It quickly turned from awesomeness to lameness. In the beginning the competition was exciting and as close to real fighting as you can get. Now it's overly regulated and boring. It's like boxing now.
I still remember to first few UFC's fondly though.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
So I just got done watching the fight soo...
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worst judging ever.. That's all I have to say.
Shogun won that IMO but judges gave the nod to Machida. Shogun was robbed IMO.
-

I agree, dont think the judges were watching the same fight..

I agree, Rothwell wasn't winning, but he sure as hell wasn't out.
Shogun is the true LHW champ.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
They always say don't let the judges decide your fate. It's ashame that Machida wants to be champ so bad that he can't even man up and admit the judges made a poor decision...http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Mac...-Rematch-20544
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Exactly, where is that Samurai honor they always talk about? I saw Machidas face before the decision, he had the look of a beaten man and he knew it. Even he was surprised with the results.
Looking at his ribs and face, he got Shogunned.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
At least they're talking about a rematch, they definitely should have one

Yeah, it was a good fight so I'm up to see the rematch. I just think Shogun will be at a disadvantage now that the Machida camp knows his gameplan.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Maybe but I don't think it's gonna be till at least next january, so they should both have plenty of time to train for each other. I think machida needs to work on a little offense if he wants to win decisively

Yeah, they both need to be more aggressive in the next fight. I'm glad to see a good performance by both fighters though.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Well dang the brock-carwin fight got rescheduled to January. Apparently Brock is having some respiratory problems or something. I was looking forward to seeing him get beat next month haha

Yeah it is, I primarily wanted to see the rising of the greats. And the blood bath first UFCs are entertaining to watch too. Motivating me to go to the local MMA gym and train under Jeremy Horn.

Yeah, I'm training MMA right now at a Gracie gym. I would recommend the training if you want to get in shape, it's really good stuff. You should check out your local gyms :D

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Looks like Thiago Alves pulled out of his rematch with Jon Fitch, a shame, that was going to be an awesome fight.
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Anyone watch the strikeforce fights last night? Pretty good, Fedor knocked the livin hell out of Brett Rogers, and the Miller-Shields may have been the strangest fight I've seen
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
I seen the Fedor fight on you tube today :gj:
-
Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Awesome night of fights, plus it was free! I hope Strikeforce keeps going on this.
And yeah, that punch from Fedor was just devastating. First thing came to mind when he threw that was "Rocket Punch!" for those of you who play Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 =P.
Fedor's starting to KO people left and right, I was thinking he would've subbed rogers.
WAR FEDOR!

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
I quit watching UFC once it went commercial, added rounds and rules and stuff. It just wasn't the same. I did used to watch K1 when I was in Japan though.

Haha yeah the classic UFC was awesome. But I do like the new UFC, right now they're putting mixed martial arts on the map and it needs the exporsure to be successful.
K-1 is so awesome, I still watch it :P

Yeah I loved watching Pride as well, I was really sad to see them go down.
UFC PPV's are expensive, but I'm one of those guys who are willing to pay to watch it live. I usually have gatherings for these and we have a lot of fun, so it's worth it to me.

Re: -- Official Mixed Martial Arts Thread --
Me and all my buddies usually go to a bar and watch the ufc fights, always a lot of people there to see them so it's fun. Free strikeforce was nice though, beer is much cheaper at home :gj:
