    Venomous Yes Or No?
I thought I'd post this question in the General Herp rather than Venomous because I thought this part of the forum was getting more attention.

Anyways, Are you into Venomous or not. Just a question that came to my head when I was thinking of if I would ever purchase a Venomous. My answer is no. I like them but I wouldn't want to risk anything with them.

    Daniel

Ps: Please write down in your reply Yes OR No. (I tryed to get a Voting Poll up but it didn't work.)

I Am in the same boat as you, I like them but I wont risk having one. There are plenty of really cool non-venomous snake species out there.

I agree with both of you. Another reason would be because I couldn't hold it I guess.

If I could I would own a Cobra or a Gaboon Viper but since I am easily distracted and get bit a lot already, no I will never own one for obvious reasons  but wish I could.

IMO many of them are beautiful, but it's just not a risk I'll ever take. I'll get my venomous fix by living vicariously through Viperkeeper.

I never in a million years thought I would own venomous animals. I always said when I started with pythons that I didnt like venomous and even the past couple of years going to shows I always just kind of walked right on past venomous snakes but the last 2 years Ive really gotten into them and I believe as long as you are extremely careful they are no dangerous then pythons or any other snake. Of course you can not hold them or interact with them like you would nonvenomous snakes but they I think they are amazing display animals. I could sit in the snake room for hours just watching our cobra.

After seeing some of the venoumous snakes out there some day I may get a albino cobra. But other then that probably not. Besides right now I have a 1 year old child would not want the potential risk in my house same reason i dont have a gun. I have nothing against them just dont think it is my best intrest.

I voted yes, cause I am into them, but I don't have any. I think I may one day, but that's pretty far in the future. I have a friend who's got some timber rattlers and they fascinate me

I can't see myself ever getting a venomous animal. The very thought of it makes me cringe. Not because I don't like them, but because I know that no matter how careful I would be, I would be the one to get bitten. I think some species of Cobras are really beautiful, but I'd never take the chance. Therefore, I voted no.

i am very into them. but my wife isn't into me having them. there are risks assoicated with these type animals which is why not just anyone should have them. but if you mind your handling skills and keep an eye out, you can avoid some danger. your guard must never be down, you husbandy must be really good, and your caging better be top notch. i currently own 2 centipedes that will send you to the hospital and they are way more unpredictive than a snake is.

I love venomous snakes, as I love all snakes, but I don't see the appeal in keeping them as pets. They may be fascinating and beautiful to behold, but I my favorite part of keeping snakes is being able to interact with them, safely.

looks like i'm the minority here. i love gabbys and rhinos. i plan on getting some here in a couple years, but for now just pythons and boas. i used to own a white lipped viper and love that little guy. he was the coolest thing! i know you can't hold them (atleast you SHOULDN'T) i still enjoyed owning him. just a gorgeous snake to have in my room. added to the theme. my room has vines hanging from the ceiling and everything. if you've ever been to a rainforest cafe, it looks just like that. :rolleye2:

I voted no, since I wouldn't want to own one, but I love how beautiful they can be.

If I were to own one, a Gaboon would definitely be the one I'd keep. They are my favorite venomous snake, and they are just huge in girth! I hear they have the longest fangs out of all of the venomous snakes discovered; their fangs can get 2 inches long. Gaboons are beast!:D

Depends on what you mean by venomous. Technically, hognoses are venomous and I've got a couple of those, however they aren't dangerous to people. I don't think I'd want a snake that could kill me or put me in the hospital with a bite though many of them are very beautiful and I could sit around watching them for hours.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind adding some Gila monsters to the collection one of these days. While venomous, I don't think there have been any deaths attributed to their venom.

I just bought a gun, intend on getting a few more.

I'd love a motorcycle, venomous reptiles, and an ultralight airplane. The only thing keeping me from them is money.

I'm not an adrenaline junky, in fact with those things I'd be very safe, no stunting or anything with any of them.

I just don't let statistics keep me from enjoying the things that I like. I'd rather die in an accident while living life than die from old age hiding from it.

I love venomous, but I would probably never keep them. I think alot of people get too comfortable with them, which a lot of times ends up in a bite.

I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old. As long as you are not careless and know how to properly handle them and keep them in the right caging in a room locked then you should never have a problem. Its never even crossed my mind that one of my kids would end up getting harmed by a snake. If I thought for one second my children were in danger of any of my animals I would not own them. My fiance was VERY nervous about getting the cobra and when we actually got her she has relized that its no different then any other snake we own. Of course I handle them more carefully then I do my other snakes and I always clean there cages first so Im not tired or anything when I get to them. But I cant stress enough that responsible keeping does wonders and with it the risk is greatly minimized.

I do enjoy looking at and learning about Hots very much. As to owning one, i go back and forth on that decision. Someday, with the proper training, Yes, i would love to own a few.

Whether that will happen or not, and whether or not im still interested in furthering my herp keeping experience in that direction, in those years to come, we shall see.

Im gonna stir the pot here, I have a venomoid weastern diamondback.

I know that may piss some people off but he is super healthy, eats great and has no digestion issues. I treat him like he is "hot" though.
I will get some actual hots when I move out and have the proper facility and space to keep them. ( i have a heated shed away from my house that they are in now)

I think gaboons are the most beautiful animals on the planet. I love ALL hots, and I do not think badly of people who keep them, but I think there is definitely a line between a pet and not a pet. I do not believe that a venomous snake in my care would be as happy as it would be in the wild.

In other words, no. Even if I were experienced enough to feel comfortable working with hots, I do not personally believe that they can be kept happily in captivity.

I'm very curious.... How are constrictors different from hots in this regard? Why are our pythons, boas and colubrids "happy" being kept in captivity, but a snake with venom would not be? They're all still snakes, with the same basic needs (security, consistent environment, food, water)...they just go about dispatching their prey in a different manner.

As far as the poll question goes....I fall into the camp that loves hots as much as I love all snakes, but would never choose to keep one myself because of the high degree of risk involved in doing so. There are too many stunningly beautiful non-deadly snakes out there to keep them all....so I don't feel any strong need to add hots to that list, no matter how beautiful they are.

Do rear fanged count? I'd love to have a FWC, Hognose, and Mangrove one day...

If I had the money to responsibly care for a hot, I definitely would. Keeping the supply of anti-venom alone is a potential cost of thousands...
That brings me to a question...Do the hot keepers on this site, especially those with other people living in their home, keep a supply of anti-venom?

Many rear fangs CAN make you sick, and some can kill you.

Many snakes we consider venomous have a less dangerous bite than some of the most dangerous rear fanged venomous snakes out there.

Don't forget that boomslangs are rear-fangers.

I believe that the selective breeding of constrictors in captivity for so many, many years is why I get the feeling that they're "happier" in captivity than hots. I am very opposed to keeping any WC snake, or ones that haven't been reproduced in captivity for more than a few generations. The vast majority of the captive hots I've seen and heard about are WC or whose parents or grandparents were WC. Correct me I'm wrong, but I get the feeling that they're very difficult to breed.

For me at least, it's simply the keeping of animals that are not completely adjusted to captivity that I do not support.

(I mean no offense to those of you who keep hots, it's just not my thing.)

Ive always loved and been facinated by hots but i wouldnt own one.

My only reason behind this is i dont want something that i cant touch and hold like you can with BP's. My only exception is my fish aquarium and i have held a couple of the fish lol. Large pleco's cannot be netted for fear of injuring their fins or spines so i just pick them up by hand to transfer them.

As for the gun statement. I have a 5 year old. I have firearms and knives. Its called responsibility. I was raised in a home full of weapons but i knew what would happen if i ever tried to touch any of them. My parents tought me right. Im educated and responsible about them and I have no worries about my son.

Hots on the other hand. Id want to hold it and id get mad that i couldnt. I do love eyelash vipers though.

There are many c.b. venomous animals in the trade today. There are a ton of people that breed monocled cobras and the various morphs with that species and you can usually find c.b. venomous snakes if you look around. There just isnt as large of a market with them as there are with constrictors. People have been breeding venomous snakes just as long as nonvenomous snakes.

Snakes in general are misunderstood but poor venomous snakes are hit even harder. People are terrified of rattlesnakes and copperheads around here but they dont understand that the snake is 100 times more scared of us then we are of them. My copperhead is very laid back and rarely ever shows any signs of being aggitated and ready to strike. Shes struck at me I believe twice since Ive owned her. Our cobra is very aggressive in her enclosure (like alot of snakes) and does alot of bluff striking she will strike but wont actually have her mouth open but once you get her out you she gets very calm you put her in a tub and she lowers her hood and just becomes very curious. She hasnt hooded up and attempted to strike at me outside of her enclosure
