How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
How did/do you come up with the names you have for your Ball pythons? I know some of you don't have names for your Ball pythons, but you probably have named some pets before. How do you come about with the names that your snakes have? Do tell.:D

(..I am the worst snake-namer in the history of snake-namers.)

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
I think we already had a thread on this, but I don't mind repeating it! :D My BPs are all named after Shakespearean characters, with the exception of Delilah... her name means "dark beauty" in Swahili, which seemed fitting for a beautiful dark snake from Africa (she was my first snake, before I decided to use a theme). Here are the others:

Pedro, 1.0 Mojave - Wanted a suave Spanish name for him, and this one is from the play Much Ado About Nothing.

Desdemona (Mona), 0.1 normal - She looked like a Mona the second I saw her! Also a character from Othello, my favorite of Shakespeare's plays.

Rosalind & Orlando, 1.1 het albinos - Named after the lovers from As You Like It since they were bought as a couple. ;)

Toby, 1.0 pastel - Character from Twelfth Night; although I originally found his name off a list of Hebrew Bible names, and just thought it was cute.

Vincentio (Vinnie), 1.0 spider - From Measure for Measure, chosen because he just looks like a Vinnie. Now I love to call him "Vinnie the Spider," as it sounds like an Italian mobster - LOL.

Scout, 1.0 reverse Okeetee corn snake - Since these snakes originate from the Southern US, I decided to give him a Southern-sounding name... and Scout also goes along with a literary theme. (gimme a break, I'm a librarian! :P)

Well mine was by accident! My son named our first Elizabeth...then our second was named Henry. At some point my hubby added King and Queen to their names so I would say now we need to go with names of Royalty.

I could have not said it any better Greg!

When I first got into snakes years ago, yes I named a few. As of now, none of my snakes have names except for the few I named years ago (Jinx my corn, Loopy my BP who has neurological problems, and Sulawesi (Sula) my old blood). I no longer see the need to name them. They are very much loved, cared for, and prized animals to me.... but like Greg said, they are my collection. Owning, caring for, and breeding snakes is a hobby to me. And I absolutely love it!

I use different ways of naming my BPs. Example: Fluffy was my first snake & I figured it would be kind of cool when I tell someone to come see Fluffy and they are expecting a small dog or something (lol I was young). I named Casper because I eventually want to make True Ghosts with him.

I think using a theme such a Shakespeare is always a good way to do it.I'm terrible with naming my animals and probally would not do it but fortunately my girl loves naming things(she even names our house plants) Thus far we have Susie the normal,Mary Jane the spider,Priscilla the lesser,Fiona the Enchi,Serina the fire and of course Mr.Slithers the Lesser/Pastel.

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
My girlfriend and I enjoy naming things after food, and also giving themes to certain groups. Our first BP was named Lentil. I give especially "cute" names to the ones people might regard as freighting, like our rescue alligator, or gets lives in a petting zoo and we use for school presentations and the like, his name is Muffin. Other than that we just go for what ever food name seems to fit them.

I prefer actual names, rather than a numbering system, because it makes it really easy to know who we are talking about without having to go and check which animal it is. It makes the whole experience feel a lot more personal, and less like I am manufacturing reptiles.

so they are called dave , daisy and dorothy. We then gave them surnames aswel and thats Mc lovin from the film superbad. We also have 2 oscar fish called Ted and Myra and a plec called Bob . Weird names but we find them funny. :D

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
Nice everyone. I like how some people come up with a theme for naming their BPs. I just name my BPs and other snakes actual names.

Like, my friend came up with Candice (when I first purchased my first BP) and I thought that fit.

My second BPs name is Monty, not after Monty Python, but I've wanted to name one of my snakes Monty for a while and a python named Monty seemed pretty cute.

My Kingsnake, Steve, is named after Steve Irwin. Since Steve Irwin is the person who really got me into snakes and reptiles, I needed a snake of mine to be named after him.

Churro was just something random one of my friends came up with so it seemed pretty cute so I named him Churro.

Even though these aren't snakes, I named my Leopard gecko Sobe after the drink, since their drink has a gecko on it and I named my turtle Miss Piggy because she eats a lot and doesn't stop.

So, I think naming my snakes are fun for now, but once my collection gets big I would stop naming my snakes.

When you grow into a selective breeding collection & it gets very large even keeping track of their numbers & cards is alot of work let alone names

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
I choose names based on many different things. My first real constrictors were an albino burmese and a columbian red tail. The burm was a male named Archon which in some cultures is a type of vampire which more closely resembles a zombie (similer to revenant). I chose this name simply because he had large teeth and drew blood LOL!

The red tail was a female named blitzkrieg because she was lightning fast at feeding time and had the attitude of a warrior. Not to mention im a metallica fan  We called her blitz for short.

My BP's dont all have names yet.

03' F is Thunder. Very slow & picky feeding response.

07' Pastel is Orion. The greek god and constellation. He has a couple stars in his pattern.

09' Pastel is Bella. Shes just cute thats why :P

It takes me awhile to name my animals so the others havent gotten names yet.

The cattle dogs are Radar (huge ears) & Kain (beautiful, warrior, accomplished, golden, war-like) It fits him too. The cat is Psycho.. It definately fits him.

Even most of the fish have names. Except the ones i cant tell apart

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
I always think I'm gonna do some cool theme with the names of animals in my collections, but somehow that never works out. My chinchillas, for example, were originally all named after terms from astrophysics -- so, I had Muon, Quark, Quasar, etc.. Then it expanded to astrophysics or mythology (Orion, Titan, etc.) -- now it's just whatever name I can think of ...

I don't really have a theme anymore for naming things. At this point, it's pretty much whatever comes to me. There was one kid on a forum awhile back who had named all his bloods after emotions, so I named two of mine like that -- Thao (calm) and Rage (nasty one), but then I've also got Bowie, Sister Mercy and Sister Charity, (all VPI stripes); for BPs I've got Roswell (mojave), Junko (pinstripe), Juno (spider), Macchiato (butter) ... Norma the normal ... Maybe the "dinker" ...

My fiancee ended up naming my bumblebee -- I told him it was the most expensive snake I'd ever bought, and asked him what to name it -- he said, "Money." So, my bee's name is Zed Money, after a weird kid we knew in high school.

I've got a pretty sizable collection, but I still like to try to name everything if I can ... It actually helps me keep track of them to have names and not just ID numbers (especially for species that I've got a lot of, like bloods and BPs). I always told myself that if I ever got to a point where I couldn't name everything, that was too many snakes ...

A lady was just awarded an Ignobel Prize for her study in which she did a survey and found that cows with names produced more milk than cows with ID numbers. :P

I take forever to name my animals. Both my males are named for their patterns, my first snake, Lilly, her name came from a long conversation with a friend, but other than that I usually wait until something pops into my head that fits (like Delilah) My cats were both named by waiting until I found one that "fits"

I take forever to name my pets, too LOL. I like naming my snakes, even though I take forever. I just find it, as stated before, easy to idenify them. I think I want to try to name my snakes after German words, such as naming a female Ball python after the German word for 'beauty', or 'beautiful'. I'm trying to learn German, and I am half German, so I think it would be pretty cool to name them after certain German words with a meaning to them.

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
My first ball was named Irulan because I like Dune and because I really love that name. The rest are all named after elements. I already had some good elemental names picked out (Iridium, Tungsten), and I figured I'd make that my theme. I can match the snakes' colors and patterns to elements, and I don't have to worry about running out of names until I get over 118 snakes...and that's gonna be a while!!

All of my reptiles are my kids, so I don't feel comfortable giving them numbers. It feels way too impersonal for me. So they'll all get names, even if they're kinda dumb. ;)

Re: How do you choose names for your Ball pythons?
My wife gets to pick the names now, kind of. Her hobby is shopping, mine is ball pythons. To integrate the two, they get named based on designers and what not. Thats why we have Gucci, Kors, Express, Max, Azaria(female version of Azria, BCBG Max Azria being covered on that one), Louis V. My daughter, who is about to be 3, chose Ribbit and Itsy Bitsy. I named my het lav albino Prince(Purple Rain), my poss het lavender Question. My mom was in town and named my Albino Albert. I bought a 100% Het Pied male and a 50%Het Pied female locally for a very low price, so I named them Hopes and Dreams. And then there's my OG, who I missexed as female and named her Stephanie after my wife because she/he was being stubborn. When he was resexed as a male, the name changed to Stefan E. And thats the story of all the names. =]

My bee, Hugo... was my first snake, and i wanted him to have a cute name, but not something so out there that i'd get the  from friends...

Someone on this forum (i think) has a snake named Boss... and I thought, what an odd name-- and then i thought, maybe its like...Hugo Boss... and then I kinda got caught up on Hugo (no he is not named after the Hugo Boss brand)

Hugo means bright heart or bright mind and spirit... and since he's a bright little bee, i think it works!

Evie, my female lesser, was named after Natalie Portman's character in V for Vendetta... I love words, and that movie was the best alliteration of V i've ever experienced. Plus she has the V over her eyes.

All of my leopard geckos (all 20) are also named, and they are all named in relation to their appearances... ie. my snows are Domino, Magpie, Poppyseed etc., my Tangerine Tornados are Scorch, Inferno and Calypso...

My BCI is named Atlas because of the myth about Atlas being a titan who held up the world, and a boa is going to be the biggest snake I own... and his saddles look like old world maps... AND I've been wanting a boa since I first held a baby boa about a decade ago-- and I finally have one... AtlasT :P

    Balls: Konjou, Pixie and Ozzy
