Keeping Snakes in the same room as Rats!
So here is my question if i were to breed a very small amount of rats say 1.2 small group! In a 10 gallon tank in the same room as the snakes would it make the snakes more aggressive having them in feed mode all the time. And what would the smell be like i know rats arent as bad as mice but im not sure if id wanna keep a 10 gallon tank in my room with rats if its going to smell!

Nope, I keep two tanks of rats in the same room as my ball pythons and I havent had a problem, they know when it's time to eat, Other than that I never have signs of aggression.

i was gonna say if anything, its actually made them not as driven to take the rats as soon as i open the tub. its almost like they got used to the smell and now i have to dangle the rat for about a minute or so before they snatch them up. im sure every ones exsperiences are different thou

Never really thought about that. I have a few balls that wont take the rat right off the bat. Ill slowly spin the rat to get their attention. I used to swing them a little but the snakes would sometimes miss. Slowly spinning works :cool:great.

i keep lots or mice and rats right in my snake room.
as for them not taking feeders right away i have never had an issue with that, other than the very few problem feeders i have

We've done the rats-and-snakes-in-the-same-room thing here, and it worked just fine, except that the rats do develop an odor if you're not cleaning them two or three times a week. Please remember that 1.2 rats in a ten gallon tank can easily become over twenty rats in a ten gallon tank in short order if both females drop litters close together! That's kind of a lot of rats for a ten gallon tank . . .

If your females drop litters a week or so apart, the younger litter may not do very well, as they'll be outcompeted by the older ones at the teat.

I would suggest keeping them in another room if possible. Not that it will hurt anything or make them more aggressive, but simply because of your snakes feeding response. It is recommended to prescent the room to build a better feeding response from your animals and with rats in the room you can't properly prescent. I have around 90 ball pythons and with prescenting I will have a 90-95% success rate on feeding day. I think if my animals could smell rats 24/7 this % would drop greatly.

Many rats in my snake room, weird, they eat almost every time, and they are pre-scented 24/7...lol
I can even pre-scent my hands, and grab any snake I want, with no bites, funny how that works.....

If you were to breed in a ten gallon tank your rats would blow the cover off the tank, lol, in 2 months.
A ten gallon tank is only good for pregnant moms or moms with babies.(IMO) :P

Not rats but I keep my mouse colony right in the closet right next to my snake cage no problem. I also agree that no way is a 10 gallon enough room for rats, I keep 2 breeding mice per 10 gallon here and that's maxed out. You'd be better off with a larger tub.
