At WalMart, over in the hardware section with other thermometers. :)

I bought mine at Walmart after striking out at Target and Home Depot. Mine cost about $12/ea. I use two, since I have two UTH (my apartment is cold because my boyfriend is a freak - I wish the 20L was big enough for me to share it with the snake...I'm a big fan of heat and humidity, so my BP is living my dream, while I sit shivering next to his enclosure). I measure the ambient air temp on each side, and the floor temp for each UTH. My next project is to convince my former Navy ET boyfriend to mod my thermometers to get rid of the 10' of wire and add more external sensors, so I can keep the thermometers outside of the enclosure.

Wal Mart would be your best choice.

I went to Home Depot and they didn't even have the AcuRites with the probe, just a wireless AcuRite. And it costed 16 bucks, too!

I have to say home depot. I went to walmart and the people had no idea what I was talking about when I said digital thermometer/hydrometer called an acurite. The lady sent me to like a hardware/plumbing section. Then I looked in the outdoor section and couldnt find it.

Home depot took me like less then a minute to find (right out side in the outdoor section, right next to the door) and it was like $15 or something.

It has, Temp, Humidity, Probe temp.
Its set with a temp and clock but you can take off the clock and put on the probe temp and humidity instead. It uses batterys too.

You dont even want an acurite! :taz:
They hide the probe in the back of the package its hard to tell that there even is one if i can recall correctly... It might say somewhere on the back but im not sure.

I get mine at Lowes in the outdoor section. The last time I went they moved them over with the pesticides and junk... The outdoor section was full of Christmas trees and stuff. I guess Hallloeween and Thanksgiving don't count anymore. It goes from Labor Day to Christmas... Sorry about the rant...

The indoor temp is your cool side, and you put the probe inside the warm side hide - that's your outdoor temp, or warm side temp.

There should be a button that changes the top number from "Time" to "Outside Temp" which will be your warm side...

I think I may have gotten the wrong one.. this one only has 1 probe wire coming from the back and only displays 1 temperature reading (with a switch for clock/humidity reading)

thats the right one. im pretty sure thats the same one i have.... the clock setting turns into the probe temp and the humidity. the temp you have now is the temp of the main unit where its at.

Most people will tell you to put it on the glass or the surface right above the uth, so its like almost directly on. I have mine under the substrate but its not stuck down with the sticky pad so it moves sometimes. If you have the hide over the UTH it should be pretty close to the temp you have right on the glass, but this way if your snake burrows in the substrate it wont get burned because of the temp difference of the substrate to being right on top of the UTH.

You should probably get a zoomed repti temp 500r if you dont have one already. I just got mine today. Its pretty necessary with the UTH's because they get really hot pretty fast. Mines got over like 120ºF (= :snake: burnage) so ive only been using my heat light. Now im setting my UTH for 90º and turning the light off for good probably. Its less watts and regulated better, and it doesnt decrease my tank humidity. UTH actually helps raise the humidity.

I have the zoomed rhenostat, has low med high adjustments, should be sufficient right?

and how much clearence does the UTH need from another surface below it?

Example: I have the glass tank sitting ontop of my dresser with about 1/4" of space below it

Yeah that should work but its not as precise as a thermostat. It will still keep it from getting too hot.

Not sure about clearance. Not much since they give you those four little rubber things that are like 1/8" thick to hold up the tank, and they think that is sufficient.. as long as there is air flow under it i think its fine. It does say not to put it on wood surfaces and stuff but... I dont think it matters. Mines on wood. I think it can do something to the color but im not sure that it will, since its not getting extremely hot.

I have the rhenostat on low, like almost off.. and the acurite is reading the floor temp under the "hot side" hide at 102F.. im using Aspen bedding

I put my hand on the glass above the UTH and it definitely doesnt feel like 100+..

    Current temps:
    Hot side: 102F
    Cold side/air temp: 78F
    Humidity: 67%

Theres no N in rheostat but, still... adjust it lower if you can. Even though it may not feel like it, it is. Your body temp is normally 98º so just feeling somewhat warm would mean its probably warmer t hen 98. Except 98 is core body temp you get what im saying. You cant judge an exact temperature by sense of touch.

Cool sides not bad, if the hot side is to hot your snake will probably go to the cool side, but they might not want to be that cold. But they may prefer it over being to hot....
Humidity is a tad high. I keep mine around 50's usually. or atleast try to. 60 and up during shedding times.

Ive taped it as close to the 'off' setting as possible on the rheostat. still at 100F though.
What if I put astrotuf down overtop the glass then aspen bedding ontop of that where the UTH is to help prevent burn?

I put a red spectrum lamp and the temp overall raises to 85F

100 probably isnt enough to cause harmful burns but they may not like it that hot. Astroturf isnt a bad idea, it probably will make the temp a bit lower since the heat has to travel further.

This is actually the AcuRite that folks here use. Looks like it displays more than the one pictured earlier in this thread.

    Hi,

Have you tested the dimmer on a lamp?

If you have it turned down as low as it will go and your UTH still gets to 100f chuck the thing in the bin and buy another type - $10 for a lamp dimmer is a heck of a lot cheaper than a vet visit for a burnt snake.

Or just spend the extra and get a thermostat and relax. :D
