Re: BP giant gene?
Doubt there is a giant gene that people know of. Of course, genetics do affect size one way or another.

Re: BP giant gene?
They are Sub Saharan locality ball pythons. I don't know much about them though.

Re: BP giant gene?
OH OH OH ... I want to say they are recessive. I think NERD has some. :D

I've been told that area is protected from collection, the tribes there worship them. They are bigger than Ghana locales.

Nope, not recessive & a few folks got them. They do slip into the trade. I've been asked if my biggest female here is one. She's CH 5'5" & over 7lbs now!!! She lays 11-13 egg clutches AND her offspring thrive & grow big too! I love this snake:

Her head fills the palm of my hand.
'06 Pic of her in Iris 900 rack.

Re: BP giant gene?
Ok so my snake craze has begun, I was thinking of purchasing a Mojave next year, for my first morph, but if you guys are telling me there is a Giant gene, this changes everything...
How much would they run for?
And how come I haven't heard about these guys till now?
and wow imagine if they can cross the giant gene with the morphs...

Re: BP giant gene?
How do people know it is genetic?

everything is genetic.
Big people have children that grow big.
Big snakes have snake babies that grow big.
The difference is that such things are controlled by more than a single gene. In breeding reptile "morphs", we deal with pretty much exclusively single-gene visual mutations that affect color and pattern.

Ah, let me clarify. I worded it incorrectly.
Do we know the actual lineage for the giant gene? After all, ball pythons could randomly grow to large sizes. A lot of things affect size, like feeding and general health.

import one from africa, or be really lucky when someone wants to part with one.
Keep in mind that if you breed a big locality BP with a normal sized bp, you might get bigger than average children, but statistically you won't reproduce more "giants".
Imagine the superdwarf x regular sized retic crosses. They aren't as big as regulars, but they are bigger than the superdwarves.
