    I think....
I want to add a black snake to the Nest, but I don't know whether to choose a Mexican Black King or a Black Milksnake.

Any opinions on either or both?

I'd go Black Milk because you get to witness the color change and they are really easy to handle once they get past being nervous babies.

Skip them both and get an Indigo.

They get big but have fantastic personalities.

Agreed. They are also extremly impressive as adults. Most MBK only reach between 3-5ft. Black Milks adverage between 5 1/2ft and 6 1/2ft and are capable of reaching over 7ft. Plus they can live at room temp so that cuts down on the electric bill lol.

One problem with indigos are the price and the permits and stuff involed. If your willing to go through that stuff go for it.

The only problem is that indigo cannot be kept as pet in GA regardless of their origin. http://georgiawildlife.dnr.state.ga....nt=6&txtPage=2

I say go with a Black Milk. :gj:

It must mean native subspecies of milks. I doubt they would make it illegal to own non-native milks because they are a native species, if that makes any sense. Black Milks come from Costa Rica and Panama, thats a very far way from Georgia!

So, admittedly, I don't know a lot about Indigo's either - couldn't you get one indigenous to another state and be ok?

Technically yes you can however the one that most people refer to when talking about indigo is the eastern indigo which is the one on the list.

Also even if not prohibited in someone's state the indigo requires a permit (except in CA)

The best is always to contact the department of natural resources when in doubt.

Unless the indigo was bred in that state, and you have papers from the breeder, proving so. If im not mistaken.

For interstate transport, you need the federal permit.

I do have to say that the room temperature is very attractive for the black milksnake. I'll start an inquiry thread to get some recommendations of breeders!

    Hows it been going Robin?

Go black milk. I have both and the milks get larger and much calmer as adults.

I have both as well, the mexican kings are smaller as adults, but the black milks do seem to take a while to grow up. My milks are only a year old now and while they've gotten much darker, they still have a good amount of red on them. I've also heard that you can usually still see the bands in bright light when they do finally turn black (like two different shades of black) On the other hand, my black kings are solid black right out of the egg. Also the temperament on the kings seems to be a lot more variable. I've got some that are very tame and have never even tried to bite in the nine years I've had them, on the other hand I've got two that try to bite me every time I pick them up. The milks on the other hand (I've only got three) have never even struck at me.
