Best way to get pies?

I know there are different ways of getting pies, but which way would be the best? Should i just bite the bullet and get a pie for around 1500 or should i get one that's 50 percent het and breed it or maybe a 100 percent het?If there's any other ways that i haven't listed are they easy to do and will it be expensive.

Get a 1.1 pair of 100% het PIEDS.

i dont know a ton about breeding, but what does the 1.1 mean?

- Make a traditional double-crust pie. Place top crust on fruit and pinch the edges to make a tight a pretty border. Cut some slits in the top to allow steam out.

Bake at 425 for 10 minutes. Lower temperature to 325 and bake for an additional 40-50 minutes. Fruit and juices should be bubbling around the edges.

Tips from Jane

- If you don't have time to thaw the cherries, just let them sit in the sugar-flour mixture a bit longer and stir them often to spread the sugar and flour around. If you have some left in the bowl, sprinkle it evenly on top of the fruit.

- You can also make this with fresh cherries. In that case, you'll have to pit the cherries. Frozen cherries do have certain advantages! (particularly in the winter)

- Since I like to fill my pies with lots of fruit, they sometimes spill over. To protect your oven, place an old baking sheet or some aluminum foil on the bottom rack of the oven.

I have gone the 1.1 route with both ofthem being 100% het pied ..
th number are 1.2.4 means 1.0.0 ( first number males ) 0.2.0 females and the rare 0.0.4 ( means the unknown sex )

I hope to prove out both my hets this season( going to start pairing in a week or so for the entire winter) and see if i get lucky. outside that i might attempt the albino ad work on some het albinos..

I've always liked "some assembly required", so I'd recommend getting 1.1 100% het pieds (male.female) and raising them up to breed them. You have a 1 in 4 shot of producing a pied.

One of our moderators, Deborah produced four pieds this season by breeding her two 100% het pieds together.

wow, thats awsome. Man i would flip if i saw that in the incubator. Now once i get a pie can i breed a pie with a het pie and get more pies? or would i just get a bunch of hets. When i get a 100 percent pie, how do i know that its not just a normal and there just syin its a het?

this page may help you a lot. Pieds, or piebald is a simple recessive mutation. this means, that both parent animals need to have at least one copy of the gene in question to have the possibility of producing offspring that not only carry the gene, but display the trait that it carries.

Hets, or heterozygous animals, are animals that CARRY the gene but do not display it. They look completely normal. You can not tell which animals in a clutch are hets unless you bred a visual animal (in this case a pied) to a female. ALL the offspring produced would have one copy of the gene (in this scenario it came from dad) so they would be 100% het/heterozygous pied.

100% hets - animals known to be carrying the questioned gene.

66% hets - these animals are produced by breeding two 100% hets together. Once they are proved out by breeding, they either ARE heterozygous or NOT heterozygous for the gene in question. This does not mean that 66% of the babies will be pied/carry the pied gene/etc.

50% or possible hets - these animals are produced by breeding a 100% het animal to a normal animal. The babies have a 50% chance of carrying the gene in question. Like the 66% hets, these guys need to be proven to be het or not by breeding.

1.1.1 - male, female, unknown sex.

Getting a visual male and a 100% het female is good way to get more pieds, but 1.1 100% het pieds are a great way to make your own. You can also get 1 100% het pied male and a bunch of possible het females and see if you can prove them out.

You could get a PieD and breed it with a het pieD and get more pieBALDS. You would statistically (not necessarily ACTUALLY) get 50% pieDS and 50% het pieDS. You don't know that a het pieD is actually a het. You have to know and trust the breeder.

Mmmmmm, Mermaid Pie....spilling over even.

Doesn't get any tastier than that.

Well you can get male and female 100% and wait 3 maybe 2 years or bite the bullet and buy one for 800.00 and up thats what there selling for now !

you seem to be a little confussed. ill keep it simple

het means heterozygous, which keeping it simple means, carrying 1 gene. homozygous means carrying both genes (which is the visual pied you want).

now simple as i can be gene come in sets of 2, when you breed a snake it gives one gene or the other to its offspring.

now when you breed a pied to a normal, the pied has to give a pied gene to the offspring and the normal has nothing to give, so all the offspring have 1 pied gene, so their all heterzygous, or het pied.

now you have a pied and a het pied. the pied again has to give a pied gene to the offspring but the het pied only has 1 gene. so it eigher gives a pied gene or give them nothing. 50/50 shot. so the offspring could eigher have 1 or 2 pied genes. so they with eigher be pieds (2 genes) or hets (1 gene)

now 2 het pieds each have 1 gene. they each have a 50% chance of giving the pied gene and the stats break down to.... 25% pied, 50% het, 25% normal. but you cannot tell which is het pied and which is normal. so you have a 2/3 chance of it being het, they call them all 66% hets. (50% hets come from a het x normal breeding, babies have a 50% chance of being het)

so to answer you question, yes you can get more pieds, see any of the examples above.

now your other question... simple answer is you don't know its het pied. you have to trust the person your getting the snake from. it seems most breeder will give you papers to come with the snake saying its het pied. but truth is, you can't tell. buy a pied and then you know its pied.

and your first question, if you have the money to spend, just buy the pieds, after the cost of the animal, they all cost the same to feed, house, heat, all that.

one of my freinds that comes over once in a while and helps clean cages was like if you get pied in your second clutch i want one................I WAS LIKE YEAH RIGHT............the most your getting is a pair of hets.......and you can produce your own.........LOL.............

My female produced 9 eggs - only 8 were fertile and I ended up with 4 pieds out of those 8 fertile eggs.

Anyway as far as the best way to produce some pieds

Pied X Pied = Pieds

Pied x Het Pied = 50/50 Pied and Het Pieds

Het Pied x Het Pied = 25% Pied + Normal looking offspring considered 66% Het for Pieds.

Based on the amount of information you seem to have right now, the best way for you to go would just be to buy a pied. Either that, or start reading now and pick up some hets next year. Keep in mind though, unless you find breeding ready hets (which, frankly, you would end up paying more for a 1.1 breeding ready het pied pair than you would if you just bought a pied) you'll have to wait 3 years to breed them.

Also, you may want to think carefully about whether or not you have the time, knowledge, patience and money to care for a $1500 animal. That's a big investment, and it would be a substantially larger one if you decided to try to breed them instead.

Easiest way is to buy one, cheapest way is to buy 1.1 100% het pieds babies, breed your own mice and rats, raise up the snakes and breed them and hope for good odds ;).

or you could just buy the pied you want they are pretty cheap. by the time you get hets and breed them but in 2 years if your lucky you might get one.

This was a great thread because I was thinking of either getting pair of 100% pied or 2 50% now I know I need to spend 3600-4000 for a pair and I REALLY HOPE the expo here this wknd will have some

im not sure if u heard of the NARBC show, its pritty much the biggest. But you can probably go on sunday the last couple hours and people will give you a pair of pied for about 1500, i have seen a pair for 800

Nah, not really. I've got a 2000g DH ghost pied that nobody wants lol

A het pied pair is going to average $400-$500 easily. I got my girl for $200 at a show though(last day of the show deal).

Im trying my luck w two 100% het pieD's this reason and praying for our moderators awesome results! My male has an almost complete very white ringer outlined in the pied colors so im hoping he has strong genetics and will give me lots of pied's :) Thank you Justin!
