    Different ASF?
I have a colony of african soft furred rats but for some reason everytime I see people post pics of theres they all look different from mine. I see alot of them that are multy colored with spots and such but mine are solid gray. All the adults are gray and all the offspring are solid gray in color to. Ive been trying to find some of the multy colored ones to add to my stock but I cant seem to find anyone around with them for sale. Are the mine just not as popular or something?

All of the ones I have ever seen are spotted/multi colored. Of course, I haven't seen tons of them, but in this part of the world it seems that the majority of them are the ones you don't have. I'd love to see pics of yours too!

Funny I havent seen a solid gray yet lol. I have a solid cinamon/brown adult female, some of her offsrping are solid brown with a head patch, they look like little gremlins, cute looking, for now anyways...

    Re: Different ASF?
This is my original group that I bought. The brown one in the far right seems to be a wild/normal brown (female) type. The one in the far left is the male. Not sure what his genes are and has red eyes. Some of their offsprings look like the mom but with a white patch in their head. So Im guessing he is co-dominant.

The on in the middle is the 2nd female, I searched around the web and she seems to be a "piebald" simple recesive, But a few of her offsprings look just like her, so either the male is het for piebald, or the "piebald" is co-dominant. Im guessing is the first one.

Someone that knows more will pitch in eventualy :)

Every single one of the ASF's we breed are the piebald type. I think there may have been 1 or 2 out of the many hundred babies that were all brown. None have been all white and none have had red eyes.

We started out with 4 piebald types.

    Very interesting.

I have a couple red eyed ones. Pretty good variety among my brood actually, and haven't. I have these cool grey ones with a thin white line down both sides.

popular opinion is that the selfs (all one color) are the "normal or wild types". And the pied, dilutes, and head stripes are all morphs. Who knows though if this is true.

I have lots of solid grays, some even have a little white patch right between the eyes.
The ones I don't produce often are browns, I've only had a handful of those.

Most of mine are the solid grays, pieds, albinos and solid beige.

Good luck with that. 1.9 in what size enclosure? Sounds like youre setting yourself up for a lot of dead pinkies with a 1.9

Anything more then 1.3 is more waste then it is worth. Been there, done that.

What size enclosure are you talking about anyway? Would love to see your setup that would have enough room for 10 full grown breeders and 120 pinks, fuzzys, hoppers all at once....

With a 1.9 group, less then half of your babies will survive... and the male dying will be normal.

Im hoping that the diversity of colors/morphs will help prevent in-breeding problems later down the road, but I dont anything about that kind of advance genetics, so any info on this would be much appreciated :).

I dont even know if the parents are related at all. I bought them off a local ASFs breeder/suplier that sells them as F/T over the internet/mail.
