Armadillo Lizards
Just picked these 2 guys up.
Wanted to put a small climbing lizard in my Ball Pythons old cage. I was looking at Leopards and some Anoles, but saw these guys and wanted them. Environment is basic rght now, but will fix it up for them soon.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
I don't have any but I've always loved 'em! They're so cool, congrats on the new pickup!!

Re: Armadillo Lizards
No I personally have not had any myself but am in the process right now of rearranging my reptile room and researching this wonderful lizard because a friend of mine needs someone to take over care of his. So in the near future I will have a new addition.
Great looking specimen, congrats.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
Thanks.
These are pretty cool lizards. I wanted to give them alot of climbing branches, and a scalling wall, but changed my mind because I dont want their food to get out of the top (small crickets).
Very sound sleepers. I accidently bumped into the tank the other night and they didnt even budge. They also sleep in funny positions. The big one is laying on a plateau I gave him with his head hanging off the edge.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
The female I bought was pregnant. Now I have 5 of these critters.
One of the babies is munching crickets, the other 2 Im not having much luck getting to eat and beginning to worry. Its been a couple days.
Tried small crickets and small meal worms.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
I love them I saw them on a show a while back . Don't they curl up in a little ball yes I found a pic http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/armadillo_lizard.htm omg this has to be one of the cutest things in the world.:O :winner: :D

Re: Armadillo Lizards
Any luck getting the babys to eat yet?
-
Re: Armadillo Lizards
Not yet.
I did get them to open their mouths, and when I put a crushed cricket at their mouths with tongs, theyll hold them in theior mouth, but wont eat them and will eventually spit them out.
Ive read different things. Some sources say the adults can be carnivorous towards the young.Others state theyve never seen this in capitivity. The guy at the pet store said it shouldnt be a problem to keep the young with the adults.
Since they werent really eating on their own, Ive decided to put the babies back in with the adults- hoping that maybe seeing the adults behavior with get them going.
Im keeping a VERY close eye on them and making sure the tank is filled with crickets to discourage the adults going after the little guys.So far, the adults havent bothered the babies at all.
One of the young is doing very well it seems. Very active, alert and curious. The other 2 are hiding and sleeping and not doing much else.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
Wow. Another pup today. Thats 5.
2 Last monday. One weds, friday and another today.
Yes theyre eating. Theyre munching the waxworms and a bunch of the crickets I dumped in today are already gone. Also seeing poop in their tank the last couple days.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
omg cuuuute! Lucky! Buying two, ending up with SEVEN (if I read the birth #s right) :gj:
So these guys have live young? I think that's the first time I've heard of a lizard species not laying eggs, pretty cool!

Some chameleons give live birth as well  So do blue tongue skinks, and a lot of other skinks.
We have armadillo lizards at our facility. Cool little guys who are easy to care for and do very well in captivity.

Re: Armadillo Lizards
These are not Armadillo Lizards.
True Armadillo Lizards - Cordylus cataphractus got their common name from their tendancy to curl up into a ball - like an Armadillo. This species is native to South Africa and can be found in and around kopjes ( rocky outcrops ) and scrub land habitat.
What we have here is the Tropical Girdled Lizard - Cordylus tropidosternum granted they are from the same family but they are not the same. Cordylus tropidosternum do not curl up into a ball and prefer a more tropical habitat.
Don't get me wrong they are cool lizards in their own right but they are a fraction of the price of true Armadillo Lizards.

I was just going to post this. The lizards you have are sometimes called armadillo lizards but you can tell the difference when you pay $500+ for a "real" Armadillo and $30-50 for the Girdled and the spikes are more promamant(sp?) in the real dillo. I have one of these and they are neat but not the true armadillo.
