What is DUW??
Title says it all, what is DUW??
-
Re: What is DUW??
I always think it's "Do you want?" but that's got to be wrong...
http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/DUW
Dial Up Warning makes sense as it is usually in conjunction with image threads.

Re: What is DUW??
Dial-up warning. Lots of pictures.

Re: What is DUW??
What's funny is, for those of us who used Dial Up when the internet first started, we don't even think about someone not knowing what it means.
For those of you who haven't known anything but high-speed internet, you just go huh? :confuzd:

Re: What is DUW??
I wish I'd known this back in the days when I would put up topics full of pictures on another forum. I always put "avoid if you have a slow system"
I actually had people who would be mad because their computers had crashed ~_~

ha ha.... I said something about DOS the other day and someone didn't know what I was refering to. Some younger people aren't even familar with someof the equipment we used to use.....floppy disks, digitizers, etc....It is sad that even though we aren't senior citizens yet....we can "show our age" discussing outdated computer stuff.
...does anyone still use a low speed dialup connection anymore?

A few years back I was cleaning out my garage and found a box of old computer equipment. There was a 300 baud modem in the box, it had been battery powered by two D cell batteries and had those ear cups for setting your phones handset in. I just laughed. I kinda wish I hadn't thrown it out now.

lol for some reason mark i knew you had one of those.
heck check out this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayes_M...puter_Products
copied from that page:
The modem market in the 1970's was very simple and stagnant. Modems tended to sell at US$1 per baud. Hayes saw no need to be different — the original Hayes 300 baud modem sold for US$299 retail. At that price point, Hayes could build a "Cadillac of modems", using high-quality components, an extruded aluminum case, and a plexiglas front panel with a number of LED indicators.
and yet you can get a 56k modem for under 5$ now

Re: What is DUW??
Whats great is if you go to a different forum sometimes they use TC instead of OP (TC standing for Topic Creator)

Re: What is DUW??
Dial-up...
...you mean back when I had patience? :P
-
Re: What is DUW??
... Patience? Heck I'd just read a book or play a handheld videogame when I used dialup... and that was during the era of 56k.
-
Re: What is DUW??
I never would have guessed dial up warning.... I sat here for a while contemplating what the acronym could be. Theres not a ton of words that start with U so I figured if I could figure that out I could get it. It's been bugging me for a little while. Thanks for letting me in on the "warning".

Re: What is DUW??
I remember when desktop computers had "turbo" buttons...
I remember when my chat room "Ignore" list contained half of India...
Anybody know where I can get a box of dot matrix printer paper?...

HOLY BAJESUS THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I've never known where Dot Matrix on Reboot got her name from. I know what dot matrix paper is but not by name simply by usage, and now I know... And knowledge is half the battle. *goes to store to buy a baseball bat and get the other half handled*
-
Re: What is DUW??
Actaully Dot Matrix is the type of printer which takes continuous form feed paper which then had to be burst and decollated after printing.

Re: What is DUW??
Heh,
I have an old dot matrix printer sitting in the hall I never got around to throwing out - and a box of paper for it in the back room. :giggle:
I'm kind of a tech pack rat - there's probably a baghdad battery around here somewhere.
