Any car mechanics???
Im having a bit of bad luck this week. My explorer has crapped out on me. The transmission is slipping. Its pulling the car but when the gears shift it just revs up and finally catches. I was trying to change the shift solenoid but when I took the pan off the transmission there are 6 solenoids that all look Identical. Does anyone know which one is the shift solenoid?

Re: Any car mechanics???
If memory serves there is one for every gear.. and which one is which I have no clue.. But I think you have a solenoid for every gear.. if it is slipping and doing that in all gears you may need to have the pump inside that supplys the tranny with fluid.

Re: Any car mechanics???
See I thought it was the pump inside that was messed up but my brother in law swore up and down it was a solenoid. If it is the pump inside is there anyway I could fix that and change it out without having to get a whole new tranmission? Thank you so much for the help

Yea but It would mean Dropping the tranny and totally tearing it down.. And unless your familiar with doing that I'd let a pro do it cause things can go south fast with them..

Re: Any car mechanics???
Thanks guys. I guess I need to get on the phone and find out how much all this is going to cost

Re: Any car mechanics???
cheaper to go to a junkyard and grab another tranny!! its a ford and a known problem you should be able to do a search online for common ford tranny problems and might get lucky. i would go to a salvage yard and just buy a used one.

Re: Any car mechanics???
yea ive been trying to find a new tranny but I cant find the right one. The junkyard closest to me has one for a v-8 but mine is a v-6

Re: Any car mechanics???
Some of the v8 transmissions were the same as the v6, depending on the years. First off how many miles does your explorer have? Also, it may not be the shift solenoid. Other issues occur that may make it seem like that. Check on autotrader/craigslist, a lot of the time you can find a wrecked one. Getting a automatic rebuilt can be pricey, standards are always cheaper. I just had to drop my friends T-56 tranny out of his 98 z28 to rebuild it, of course it was really cheap because he just had to give me a little money and treat me to lunch.

Re: Any car mechanics???
its a 99 explorer. Im not sure on the exact miles its currently on the side of a highway lol but ill let you know when I get to it how many miles it has. I know its alot lol.

Re: Any car mechanics???
That sucks, even more-so that it's on the side of a highway, I would get to it, and get it towed asap. In Louisiana, if a car is on the side of the road, it usually loses the wheels/stereo and stuff like that, people steal it.

Re: Any car mechanics???
yea we have that problem here to. The tow truck is suppose to be on the way out there to get it and take it to the transmission shop

I would of tried to go out there also, to make sure nobody stole anything of vandalized it. I remember when I useto street race with my 97 Mustang Cobra. I was launching my car and I shattered the transmission on the street, of course it was still the stock tranny, that's when I switched to a T-56. I slept in my car that night till I could get it towed the next morning. I wasn't going to let some idiot steal or vandalize my car. So that's why I slept in it with my gun right next to me.

Take the car to a proper mechanic,, simple as!!!!!!!!!!! If ya dont know what one is wrong or what exactly is wrong then there is no point in going at it yerself!

Re: Any car mechanics???
Not a proper mechanic, he has to take it to a transmission shop. A lot of mechanics don't mess with transmissions. Ever seen the inside of one? Tons of little pieces that can easily get lost.

Seen inside of transmissions loads of times!!! i do all my own servicing and restore vehicles. But without seeing yer mans engine then the problem cant be fixed. Th it does sound like a bearing is loose in it and getting caught between the gears when he tries to shift. Fiat vans and Transits tend to have this happen once they get to about 9 years old or so.

I hear you, but seeing the engine? His problem has nothing to do with the engine.

Re: Any car mechanics???
Just got off the phone with the tansmissions shop and the whole transmission has to be rebuilt and the car has 240,000 miles on it.

Yea, I figured that, especially with that many miles on it.
