off topic, but can you get in trouble for hot linking? I mean the person who owns it put it there... so whats the problem?

I'm not sure what you mean - the person who posted the picture is not the owner of the picture or the site it is hosted on. He did correctly mention this and the site it is hosted on gives us the details of who owns the picture which we also ask for. :)

But because he used it as a picture rather than a link it is not good "netiquette" and against one of this sites T.O.S.

It is considered rude to hotlink someones images without their permission because it costs them bandwidth and therefore money.

If you put it as a link in a thread then only people who want to see it will click and download it from his site. But if you use it as a picture then it has to be downloaded every time someone opens the thread - whether they have seen it before or if they wanted to or not.

In this case it is 162Kb - but the number of views on a thread can really mount up to a considerable download over time. And since no one see's any more of the original site there is no benefit to the site owner.

Most of the time people hotlink by accident or without recognising it can be a problem so we generally do not use the infraction system we just change it to a link - but I suppose if someone just wouldn't take the hint and kept doing it often enough they might "get into trouble" for it.

Does that answer the question or have I just confused everyone?
