Incubator options
Trying to get everything ready soon so I'm not worrying about it next year.
I need an incubator, one that, at a minimum, can incubate 4-5 clutches of ball python eggs.
I've been looking at:
http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/...ile-incubator/
But I'm open to options. I like the price of that one ($250) but am not sure how many eggs it could hold.
Any help would be appreciated.

That thing is TINY. It can probably only hold 1-2 clutches.

Re: Incubator options
You can get the same 'incubator' from ThinkGeek.com for $100.
It's a mini fridge/warmer. They really made very few changes to it, to sell it as a reptile incubator.
I understand that folks have indeed used the mini-fridge version for incubation with no problems at all, it works great.
Look closely, compare, and tell me what is worth the extra 150. <lol>

Wow.....
Thanks for the link. :D
I'll keep looking. (And I'll check out the nsreptile one posted)

Re: Incubator options
No problem. Of course, I estimate the mini-fridge could probably hold 2 or 3 clutches. Which is better than a Hovabator, which only holds 2 and only if you put them all in together--and it's a great deal more versatile and accurate. It's probably worth the $100.
I've been debating getting a few.

And of course in the off season you could put your beer in it. :D

if you were going to figure on that i would just get a small fridge and put flexawatt, fan and a thermostat in it
-
Re: Incubator options
You could, but then you couldn't cool your beer.

Re: Incubator options
I'm interested, has anyone tried the thinkgeek one?
I think i'll probably end up building my own incubator, but in the mean while that is a great idea for a very small breeding operation. I'd be curious about its accuracy. A 5 degree difference dosen't seem like it would matter much for cooling drinks, but i wouldnt want it with eggies. Do these hold temp well?

Re: Incubator options
You can't go wrong with a home made cooler incubator IMO. Best bang for the buck.

Re: Incubator options
I just picked up a big apple herp safety hatch incubator and it holds 12 6qt. sterilite tubs. Its a little pricey but it comes with a thermostat and hols a lot of bins.

Here are some more suggestions if you are not the DIY type

If you are DIY type than this (That is what I did now I need something bigger though) http://www.eyehit.com/degei/supportf.../inc/index.htm

Re: Incubator options
A 4 cubic foot mini fridge holds four 6 qt tubs, holds temps awesome, and the best bang for the buck in small incubators.
The mini fridge held within 1 degree temperature kept in a closet(stable environment) and I was quite impressed for the cost.
I picked up my fridge off of craigslist for free, and it was basically new not working shape.
I believe total I had $75 into it :)

Re: Incubator options
I guess I never realized what little went into making an incubator. I'll start hunting for a non working freezer now. :D

Re: Incubator options
Jake sells some awesome incubators!
This year I used a closet with a plastic shelving unit in it and heat tape down the back. Perfection!

Re: Incubator options
So is it basically 1 clutch to one shoebox tub? Or how does that work exactly.
I am going to be using an old wine cooler that is broken and I can fit in 5 tubs and I wasn't sure how many eggs that would hold. I am only expecting around 5 clutches if everything goes ideally/
I know you're not supposed to unclump the ball of eggs, but I wasn't sure if multiple clutches would fit in one tub. Can someone clear this up for me?

Re: Incubator options
Is one foot of 11 inch flexwatt really enough to heat that whole cooler?
-
Re: Incubator options
It takes one two foot section of 11x12 flexwatt to heat my mini fridge.
-
Re: Incubator options
I made own Cooler incubator this year and it was VERY easy. Cost was under 100 dollars without a Thermostat. We will see how it goes this year I hope

So that's a no? How do you have a 2 foot section of 11x 12? I'm just trying to figure out how much flexwatt to use.

They used to send it uncut when you order so much at a time, I "think" they still do.
I bought multiple feet and I cut it at two feet long for the inc.
I tried a one foot piece, the t-stat ran full time and I didn't like that, so I put two feet in and the t-stat did't work so hard to keep 90 degrees in the tub inside the inc.
My mini fridge is a 4 cubic foot model, I only used 1 shelf last year but it will hold two 6qt tubs on each shelf.
I liked it's ease of use so much I'm putting a twin one next to it this year, lol.
This is before I altered the position of the flexwatt, but it gives you an idea of where I placed it.
If your going to use both shelves then a little fan to circulate the air and keep steady temperature top to bottom works great.

Re: Incubator options
Smaller clutches, 2-4 eggs, may be able to double up in one shoe box. But a big clutch will definitely need its own box.
-
Re: Incubator options
Oh and I forgot to mention that I can fit 6 shoeboxes in the cooler its a
126qt model I believe.

I was considering the kit and making my own cooler one if I need more space after my wine cooler one, or if that one doesn't work fir some reason.
