BAD GUY-Matt Oakley

Hopefully this doesn't end up being a novel. But please take the time to read it.

I bought an Adult Female Blood Python off Matt roughly 2 months ago for 490 shipped. She arrived at the shipping address in a duct taped Produce box! There was NO heat, NO snake bag, NO insulation. Just a snake thrown in a box with some paper. This is not the right way to ship an animal! What should have took place was this girl should have been shipped in a properly insulated box without a heat pack. Not shipped in a box you’d find at the grocery store.

When contacted, Matt replied back saying that he thought I told him it was "hot enough" here and that the box she was shipped in was more than adequate. Anyone in the reptile business SHOULD KNOW BETTER than to do something like this. This was a very unprofessional move, especially for someone who claims to have over 4 years of experience on KS. I didn't see any of the other problems yet.....

Next issue...

She came in with an RI and easily 200 to 300 Mites, as well as stuck shed on her body and eyes. She got soak after soak after soak to kill the little things as well as getting rubbed down with Reptile Relief. Her cage was treated with PAM and in she went. I contacted Matt again and he refunded me 100 bucks for vet bills. I'll give him this much, that was a good gesture. It turned out to be too little too late though, especially since my vet bills alone amounted to over 100 bucks.

Now I'd had luck with Amikacin in the past with Bloods and decided to give it a go for 2 weeks to clear up the RI, didn't work.

We then ran a Culture and Sensitivity test on her and put her back on Amikacin as well as Fortaz for a month, THAT didn't work.

I contacted Matt and told him that we need to resolve this issue as she was going to be put down as she wasn't getting better despite mine and my vets best efforts. I told him that if he refunded the purchase price for the animal minus the shipping cost, that we would be square. He sold me this animal, she's gotta get put down, seems fair doesn't it?

Matt said that he had had the snake for over a year and she was healthy in his care....this snake says different.

We bickered back and forth for a few days over this, her being such a beautiful animal, I kept holding out on her, and thought to give her one more go...

I contacted my veterinarian and he thought trying one more drug class outside the Aminoglycoside and the Cephalosporin groups might be a last shot, we went with a Fluoroquinolone; Baytril. Since she was already doing terrible, what could it hurt?

We have her on 10 mg/kg q 24h with ZERO improvement. This is the highest dose and most frequent you can give this snake.

I already know Matt isn’t going to refund the price for her, nor does he want her back. Wonder why.....

I just hope that I can reach enough people with this information, to spare them the heartache and stress that this snake and Matt have caused me. I hope it reaches enough of you too, cause I’m out 500 dollars!

Frankly I am not too surprised, The lowest prices usually means lowest quality. Case in point.

This is not the lowest price for an animal like this though.

This is about average price actually.

For the price given for this animal.....this should not have happened.

I've always wondered this... since some carriers require that you become an "approved shipper" would it do any good to report someone that ships an animal so carelessly?

If it came in FedEx, then he either violated the contract he signed when getting certified with FedEx or quite possibly he isn't certified.

If he shipped UPS through SYR, then it should be reported to them and hopefully they will prohibit him from using their service again. If he shipped direct through UPS then it was more than likely done without authorization from UPS. They haven't allowed snake shipments (other than those grandfathered in) in years as far as I am aware.

Piss poor packaging and sending sick animals. Two of the cornerstones of a reptile industry scumbag.

I really hope he refunds the full price! I also wonder if you can contact SYR and tell them about this, and maybe get his account there banned :confuzd: Im not really too sure how those things work, but it couldn't hurt to send them this...

All that SYR asks is that you watch the video on how you SHOULD package something.

But don't get me wrong, SYR is a GREAT service and I know LOTS of people are benefitting from it.

You just need to do what is right, and not skimp on the quality of your packaging.

I also did business with Matt last summer. Needless to say, I was VERRY VERRY unimpressed.

I bought my first morph from him (pastel female) and at the time, I was 50/50 on price and quality. Matt had a good price. I sent him the money for the snake that I had picked out. There were some issues so I had to call him. When he picked up, he was clearly hanging out with all of his buddies and you could hear them all swearing and laughing in the background. He had to tell them to "Shut the hell up!" a couple times... He's a young adult from the east coast and just doesn't know business etiquette...

When I got the girl, she was a little thin, but not in bad condition. From there on, I decided to only do business with the quality breeders...

No excuses - not with the new ship your reptile program that Chad Brown has developed.........this is a horrible job of shipping a LIVE ANIMAL!

Wow, that is totally disgusting the way that the snake was packaged! The styrofoam not only provides insulation but also provides more stability for the box. What if something super heavy was plopped on top? That snake would be squished! If the truck was really hot, the snake would've been roasted alive. People trying to save a buck like this make me so angry. Thank you for the information about Matt, I have considered buying from him but now I know to avoid his ads.

Good Lord, I feel so bad for you and your python. I did have one bad phone experience with Matt and vowed never to buy anything from him, but it didn't raise enough suspicion or alarm to go to the BOI. This, however, seems like a horrible situation, and I totally sympathize. Good luck, and I hope you can save your little girl. To make it right, he either has to pay for all of your vet bills (if she makes it), or if she doesn't make it, pay all of your vet bills AND refund your money including shipping. This is the only honorable thing for a business person to do, and I wouldn't accept anything less.

I'm glad people are emphasizing with me. I was worried maybe I was over-reacting about this situation, and would just have to deal with it.

I would post this on the BOI. Even if he does resolve the situation, people need to be aware of his shipping practices and the quality of the animal they may be purchasing. I poked around on the BOI and it seems that this is not the first time he's shipped something inadequately in a banana box.

Even if he makes things right by giving you your money back and paying your vet bills, please follow through on notifying the proper people (UPS, SYR, BOI). That packaging was inexcusable...

As I’m sure many people won’t answer on this forum but answer these questions to yourself and put yourself in the shoes of the seller in this situation…

Would you refund someones money if they said you sent them a half dead snake but it was still feeding? Even my MOM said, “Snakes that aren’t healthy don’t eat.”

Would you refund someones money if they said the snake had hundreds of mites crawling over it when they got it and you knew that wasn’t true as this is something that’s literally impossible for you to not notice?

Would you refund someones money if they told you it wheezed and you already refunded $100 no questions asked? When I shipped the snake the temperature in my area was 90 degrees plus.

Would you refund someones money if they told you they took the snake to the vet several times, had it on the best meds/strongest doses available, was doing everything they could to save it but have never told you what’s supposedly wrong with the animal even when asked ? Trevor NEVER stated that this snake had a RI or gave me any other indication that ANYTHING was wrong with this animal at all. All he ever told me was that “SOMETHING” was in her system. What vet prescribes an animal meds and tells you, ”Something’s in your pets system.” No vet is going to give anyone meds not even knowing what they’re treating. If the snake had a URI Trevor would have told me this when I asked.

Would you refund someones money if after over 2 months of owning the snake they contact you telling you they’re going to have the snake euthanized and wanted a refund because she “isn't well enough to my satisfaction?”

Would you refund someones money if the person you sold the snake to told other people that they plan to breed this animal this season and tell you that the animal's condition was so bad they they felt it needed to be euthanized?? If you feel the animal wasn't going to make it why tell others you planned to breed it?

Would you refund someones money if they threatened you every other email that they’ed post a bad guy thread on the BOI about you if you didn’t comply in an attempt to force you to do so?

Who here would ever keep a snake that when received was half dead and swarming with mites risking infection to the rest of your collection, keep that animal for OVER 2 MONTHS and contact who you got it from stating that you were going to have to euthanize the animal and wanted a refund??

Who here can honestly answer yes to all these questions and say that you yourself would refund someone money if you were in my shoes??

Would you refund someones money if a friend told you the buyer posted the animal on a popular forum and EVERYONE was telling them how nice that animal was? You don’t show off half dead, mite infested snakes on forums to show everyone how nice of an animal you just got. You don’t tell people how you plan on breeding the animal and that it’s feeding if you think it might not survive. ANYONE who knows snakes knows that dying snakes don’t keep feeding and if you’re planning on having it euthanized the next day (this is what Trevor told me) then why would you even be trying to feed it?? You don’t put smiley faces all over your thread about the animal if you’re not satisfied with it.

You don’t get comments in the thread that you post on this animal like:

not to get too much into the middle of this, but how do you explain your shipping method? there is no excuse for no styrofoam, even if temps are within range.

I do also believe the shipping method he chose may have possibly been a contributing factor to this Infection.

Why would I euthanize a snake that's healthy?

Why would I want to sell it back to Matt if it wasn't sick?

No doubt she's a beautiful Blood, but she's sick as a dog and nothing the vet has or has had to special order for me has worked.

I also gave Matt multiple chances through multiple emails to resolve the situation before I headed to the BOI.

So, this is where we ended up.

I can't say this is the first time I've read of Matt Oakley shipping in banana boxes. That was just about the worst packaging I've ever seen.....and it was holding a 16lb blood. I would have shipped a used vcr in better packaging....just sayin.

If this were true, then you would have tols me this POINT BLANK! If the snake had URI and some kind of pseudomonas and you aren't making this up why would you not tell me this when I asked?? All you told me was, "Something's in her system." You never said anything to me about her having a RI either. The whole point to selling any animal is because you don't want the animal, or because you need the money. Why would any seller buy an animal back whether they believe it's healthy or not?? ANSWER ALL OF MY QUESTIONS!!! That thread you posted on the snake is a TOTAL contradiction of the condition your saying the animal's in. Why would you post that animal on this site stating that you planned to breed her and tell me that the snake fed if it was really in the condition you say it was in??? EVERYONE that replied to that thread told you how nice that animal is and you can't deny it. I don't believe at all that you would have posted that thread to show her off to everyone if she was in the condition that you say she's in and needs to be euthanized.

Oh yeah I'm pretty pissed Matt.

When I started those threads she was on a kick butt regimen of an Aminoglycoside and Cephalosporin.

I even said she was doing rough. But I figured she would pull through with the meds.

I've only had 1 snake with an RI and a quick bout of Baytril cleared it up.

Never in my life have I heard of a bacteria in a snake this resistant to antibiotic therapy.

Gentlemen, instead of going back and forth, back and forth with accusations why don't you both lay out your evidence clearly, concisely and with a timeline. Things like emails, dates of receiving the snake, dates of all contacts between you and the method of contact, copies of shipping receipts, vet bills listing drugs prescribed and diagnosis given, pictures and records you should both have on this snake, etc. That would make it much easier to follow what you are both trying to say here.

You do realize that post is from 2 months ago right? A lot can happen with an infection in 2 months when it's unresponsive to antibiotics.

So you're telling me I sent you a CBB snake with some foreign type of bacteria which your vet could not identify and it's so advanced that no meds at all could treat it?? Isn't that convenient, i've NEVER heard of anything like that either...

I didn't skip it, I only read Trevor's initial post. I did ship incorrectly. I didn't just put it in the box as the pic shows though. My temps here were 94 inside when I shipped. I was honestly worried about the animal overheating in the box. Boas/balls can not tolerate extreme temps the way balls can.

Hm... Very Professional huh? No Insulation, no snake bag, not even a proper SHIPPING BOX! I mean seriously.. The shipping supplies is the cheapest part... In fact, YOU dont even have to pay for it! You include packing materials cost in the Shipping Price Itself! SYR has an online site where you can order shipping supplies as well. And Unless you had any control over the temps, dont give us that CRAP! If you were worried about the snake overheating, do you know what the Professional thing to do would've been? Obviously you dont.. But Me, the 14 year old KID will tell you! You buy what are called Cold Packs, and tape them to the insulation lid of the box! That simple! Why dont you start putting a little effort into what you do? Or BETTER YET, STOP doing what you are TRYING to do!

No excuse at all, you asked and I told the truth as I have the whole time. It was 94 degrees inside and hotter outside, if the snake had been DOA from the extreme temps and Trevor would have wanted his money back eventhough I don't guarantee live arrival if you decide you still want the animal shipped and my/your temps are over 90 degrees and like I said, the snake wasn't out in the box with a little bit of paper like in the pic.

Hey man, this is Trevor. I got that big Red 03' female off of a ya a while back.

Hey I just wanted to let you know we ran a Culture and Sensitivity test on that girl after having ran her on Amikacin for 2 weeks. We followed suit with a month run of Amikacin and Fortaz combo and she finished that up a couple days ago.

She is right back at it with wheezing and blowing snot out of her nostrils.

I'm afraid there isn't much else I think that I can do for her, and I think I'm going to have to put her down.

She has something in her system that is FAR too powerful. The strongest of antibiotics, and an antibiotic from one of the newest generations of Cephalosporins isn't even touching it.

I wanted to check with you to see if there is anything we can do about this girl to sort of "make things right", as I'm going to have to let her go.

I was also wanting to let you know I will probably be putting this up on the BOI to let people know about this situation if we can't come to some resolution.

Let me know you think we can do about this girl, because I am at an end.

I hope to hear back from you ASAP about this.

That's the question I want answered as well.

My best guess is that its something she picked up from all the mites she had.

Whatever it is, its something pretty nasty. I just can't afford something this bad putting the rest of my collection at risk.

I'm going to give her a couple more days. I didn't make it into the vet last night, I got hung up at home.

I'm going to try and feed her tonight to see what happens. She has only ate once since she's been here, she's been on antibiotics the rest of the time.

I got home and she ate, but she's not doing good. She will hiss and gurgle and blow crap out of her nostrils.

Were going to need to go ahead and figure out what to do about her.

I keep wanting to hold out on her in hopes she will pull through, but I think hope is over. Let's go ahead and settle this so we can be done with it.

I just got home. I really don't feel that she's in a position where she's going to die or needs to be euthanized if she's feeding on her own. I owned that snake for over a year and she's fed regularly and never seemed to have any problems. If you really feel she needs to be euthanized why try feeding her? When reptiles are seriously sick or stressed the do not feed.

Let me say this.

I know my snakes better than the back of my hand, and this girl has SOMETHING in her system.

If you believe she is still in good health, then buy her back. This girl can't stay around the morphs of Bloods that I have. Them getting sick would be FAR too expensive to replace.

I understand the opposition, but she came in sick and still isn't well enough to my satisfaction despite my best efforts.

So I thought I'd give her one more shot, since she did indeed eat the other week.

The vet decided to put her on Baytril at 10 mg/kg every 24 hours. That's the highest dose and the most often you can give it to reptiles. It's a different class of drug than we've been using so it was worth a shot.

She's still doing bad, so the Baytril isn't working either.

I guess I'm just trying to emphasize that I've done everything I can do for her, my vet as well.

I'm asking one more time if you want to refund the money for her before I go to the BOI.

Id like to hear back from you ASAP, preferably today.
