What is the right size and best way to set up a tub?
I currently have my adopted BP in a 40 gallon breeder terrarium. After reading many of the threads on this site I think I would like to move her to a tub. Let's say I am going to move nothing over from the tank. What do I need to set up a tub for an adult BP?

    Thermostat
    1 Accurite
    Bedding
    Large Crock Water dish
1 small kitty litter pan with entrance soldered out for a hide.

Essentially the same thing. UTH on a thermostat will be fine!

So do I only need one hide in a tub then? Or should I have one on the hot side an one on the cool side?

That particular hide is large enough to provide a warm and cool spot inside it. In this photo, the snake was in the cool side of the hide:

Ball pythons dont need room up as much as they need floor space. They're not tree snakes. Given the chance to climb, they will, but it's not required. The 6" height is perfect.

That's the size I use (with a locking lid). Actually, I think the Sterilite that I use is only 40 quart. But it's 6" tall. The small kitty litter pan and large crock are found in the pet section of Walmart.

Most snakes in a rack systems will be fine with only one hide. When the tub is in a rack it is essentially on big dark hide for the snake.

I don't know where you people get the idea that a 6" tall tub is adequate housing for a ball python (or any snake with the exception of sand boas). Mine are climbing all of the time that they are active, usually at night within 24 hours of feeding. Sure, they can live in it, but are they happy in those things? I know, I know, "Yes! Yes!" you scream.

Because it's easy for you to clean, and cheap for you to buy, and easy for you to setup. I didn't ask if it was good for you however.

But they eat like crazy! And breed like crazy!

Want to make a human never miss a meal? And screw anything that comes its way? Put it in prison.

I've yet to find a snake I can communicate with well enough to know if its truly happy.

Until I do I will stick to other logical indicators that a snake is content for example, feeding consistently, elimination of wastes, breeding and a healthy immune system.

What is it that you take into consideration to deem tub enclosures so inadequate for a bp?

So this is a debated issue I'm guessing I wonder how the 10 or 20+ year snake owners feel

You are comparing putting snakes in tubs to prison?

You have to realize, these animals are nothing like humans. In the wild they spend almost all of their time in termite mounds and rodent burrows. They rarely just go out and roam around all night. They are very inactive animals that do not require a lot of room. Roaming around has been known to be in direct relation with a snake not eating, which usually means it is stressed out for one reason or another.

Once I started giving my snakes proper hides and heat gradients, they NEVER left their hides. Only on feeding day would they slither around slowly. Once fed, back into the hide until next week.

This makes me come to the conclusion that a happy snake who is in a well maintained environment and is being fed properly will not need the extra 12" of height that you think they need oh so much to be "happy".

I really can't give you anything other than my opinion and I can't make you accept it as fact.
