Two headed Rattlesnake

Found this on Comcast.

I can't get video to play here at work; is this the surgery that was done in Tucson today?

If so, it wasn't a two-headed rattlesnake. They were conjoined siblings--attached at the neck area. My vet (Dr. Jarchow) and one of my close friends (who is a vet tech for Dr. Jarchow) were the ones who did the procedure. I was just talking to her about that today! She says they were able to separate the two, though there was definitely a "dominant" sibling, so it's not certain if both will survive. They did have a small portion of their spine connected, so they did have to remove some of the spine from one of the siblings.

What's really neat about this story--I think, anyway--is that the mother was still wrapped around the joined siblings, protecting them even when all the other babies had already left!

That's a good mother. Pretty snakes, hopefully both make it ok, and one doesn't die.

In the words of my friend: "The weaker one isn't out of the woods yet, but he's hanging in there!" Yay!

The guy who found them said the mother was still wrapped around the baby, and he had to remove the mother before getting to the baby. My friend works with the vet who did the procedure, and I heard it from her.

There wouldn't be any point in my posting citations anyway. If the citations do not agree with what you think, then you ignore them, just like you ignored every, single citation I included in the other thread.

Also, you sure seemed eager to listen to the person who said "there is no law against freezing" rather readily (without any supporting evidence, I might add).

Feel free to do so.

But prepare for disappointment.

So far, both babies are still doing fine! They've decided to name them (despite that the Desert Museum doesn't often name their animals) Romulus and Remus. Sounds perfect for them!

Whether or not they'll both thrive depends on if they can be coaxed into eating in the next couple weeks. If so, then they should both make a full recovery!

The museum is going to keep the snakes at their facility then?

Interesting story. I cannot remember the specifics, but there was the corn pair that was connected about 3/4 down the length of their body awhile back.

Yep! Once they've fully recovered, they'll probably go on display.

So the corns had two heads but 3/4 of their body was the same? Weird. I'm used to seeing two-headed snakes only (i.e. the heads are joined either at the head or the neck, not down the body a ways). I think the problem with two-headed snakes is keeping one head from trying to eat the other.

Sadly, I just got news yesterday that the less-dominant baby passed away. He was necropsied, and it turns out both babies shared the same yolk, but the dominant baby got almost all of the yolk. The vet was tube-feeding them, but I guess it was too little too late. :(
