Arrrrrr Fleas
I want down stars to my garage to feed the rats and fill up the water. I felt somthing on my leg and it was a flea. I all ready fed one of my snakes a hopper from there wich probly had fleas on it. I know snakes dont carry fleas could it affect my snake in any way. Also I am putting the rats outside and bombing the room. What could i use on the rats and mice to get rid of this could i use frontline small dog on the rats.

Re: Arrrrrr Fleas
try spraying a line of prove a mite inthe cage ( with out the rat in there) it the same chemical they use in flea sprays. I place the rats in another container empty the tank and then spray down then set up like normal once it dry. as far as I know not issue with snakes and fleas. I spray the room once every other month to kill any possible fleas and anythign else crawling around in th room that not snake /rodent. :gj:

Question, do snakes get tape worm??? If so, you may want to get a fecal test done. Fleas like to eat tapeworm eggs, this is my so many pets with fleas will get tapeworm (from grooming themselves and ingesting fleas).

Get the provent a mite and clean and treat the enclosures. Put all rats in a large tub or tubs, with fresh bedding while you do this. Id move them to a different area. Flea bomb the garage or get a big can of flea powder (at any big pet store) and coat the entire floor with it. Leave it there at least 24 hours if you do this instead of a flea bomb. Then sweep or shop-vac it all up but id definately put flea powder along the edges of the walls and in corners and leave it there permanantly to help prevent reinfestation.
As for the rats. Dawn dish soap is what vets recommend bathing puppies and kittens in when they are too small or too young for flea treatment. This will work for your rats too. Provided they are not mean and try to bite you as you bathe each one. Id get 2 buckets. One with warm soapy water (dawn) one with clean warm water to rinse them. Have a friend help and make an assembly line. Wash a rat (rub entire body down well), rinse it, put it in clean tub of bedding, etc etc..
Then put them back into their regular enclosures that have been cleaned, disinfected and P.A.M'ed.

I was giving that advice based only on if the snakes are not kept in the same area. What i meant was. Remove the rats from the area while its being treated. Bathe them and clean their enclosures. Flea powder around the perimiter of a room is a great preventative measure. IF the snakes are not kept in the same room. Bombing can be done but the directions must be followed the same as if you were bombing your house. The area must be ventilated within so many hours before putting the rats back in there.

I always heard that fleas could give animals tape worms but never knew why. Very interesting.

See i never knew that sevin5 stuff would be safe in your house around animals. I thought it was only for outdoor gardening and around the outside of your house. That stuff is for more than just fleas isn't it? If it is cheaper than yeah go for it. But make sure it doesn't have any residual affect that would make it dangerous for animals. I think its a much stronger pesticide than flea treatments. If im wrong let me know. Oh and there is a flea powder that doesn't have that residual affect and doesnt have a strong odor that lingers. It is more expensive but comes in a bigger can. There is another one Ive tried in a smaller green can by Zodiac, but its almost greasy. Doesn't shake and coat the floors very well. Its hard to vacuume up and the smell will make your sick. That one is truly horrible. I wish i could remember the name of the other one cuz its actually safe to leave in the room w your pets provided its not directly under them. On them or near where they sleep. It is expensive tho and Ive only found it at petsmart.
